From Manhattan Mandarin's Free Mandarin - English Exchange Group

The big Tate Britain exhibition this autumn is its 1990s retrospective, which will focus on a combination of art, design, fashion and photography. It's curated by ex-Vogue editor Edward Enniful and features Juergen Teller, Corinne Day, Steve McQueen, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano among many others. Nevertheless, expect music, DJs and hopefully other fun stuff to do. I guess you could even check out some art if you wanted! In support of Amos Trust’s ‘In Her Hands’ Gaza campaign. **Very special guests: Juliet Stevenson with Asmaa Azaizeh, Alice Russell, Rasha Nahas, Ruba Shamshoum, Jacqui Dankworth, Filament Choir led by Osnat Schmool, Singing Resistance London and a band led by Charlie Wood.** **This isn't just a gig**. Every ticket sold helps to restart **a life-saving breast cancer screening programme at Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City** \- a hospital that has stayed open through the war despite being hit 8 times\, and that Amos Trust has supported for over 30 years\. Women in Gaza are three times more likely to die from breast cancer than women in the UK\. This is In Her Hands: Amos Trust's campaign standing with them\, a night where music does something real\. Come for songs from one of the great British songwriters\. Stay for solidarity that means something\. Tickets cost £47, all for a good cause. Join LCC for the first screening in **Border as Method**, a six-part series on borders, bordering, and borderlands. Taking up Mezzadra and Neilson's provocation that "the border has inscribed itself at the center of contemporary experience," the series asks us to think beyond the border as a line between two sovereign states. Across six films, we will encounter the border in multiple material and discursive forms. Each film in the series will build on questions raised by the last, followed by an open discussion. **The films themselves are secret.** We won’t publish the titles in advance, but guesses are welcome. Our second screening is a 1970s film about two men dreaming of escaping Senegal for Europe. North London’s Green Corridor: Highgate, Hampstead and Ally Pally fireworks

Join us for an interesting, varied walk through North London’s historic leafy trails, culminating near Alexandra Palace, where we can stay for a glimpse of one of London’s finest November firework displays. Starting in Finsbury Park, we’ll pick up London’s longest linear nature reserve, following a former railway line and passing a folklore-inspired sculpture that has become its unofficial guardian. We’ll climb through Highgate, with its attractive village streets and famous cemetery, before reaching Parliament Hill for views across London to St Paul’s, the Shard and Westminster. We’ll cross the ponds, meadows and woodland of Hampstead Heath to Kenwood House, the elegant neoclassical villa that is home to the Iveagh Bequest and paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. We’ll finish by passing through Highgate Wood, a 70-acre section of the ancient Hornsey Wood, before heading towards Alexandra Palace for a well-earned drink or two and the option to stick around for the fireworks later. **NB** The event does not include entry into the official firework venue. Come along on Saturday 14th November to see the Lord Mayor's Show! **About the show** The Lord Mayor's Show has floated, rolled, trotted, marched and occasionally fought its way through 800 years of London history, surviving the black death and the blitz in WW2 to arrive in the 21st century as one of the world’s best-loved pageants. Thanks to the ancient and justified concerns of King John (was king from 1199 - 1216), every newly-elected Lord Mayor is required to leave the safety of the City of London, travel upriver to distant Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown. Over the centuries this inconvenient journey became one of London's favourite rituals. It moved from river barges (down the River Fleet and then down the Thames) to horseback and then into the magnificent State Coach, and around it grew the rowdy and joyful medieval festival that became known as the Lord Mayor's Show! What better way to spend a Friday evening during early darkness and likely miserable weather than taking in the painterly delights of joyous Parisian scenes, and go for a cosy drink afterwards! **Renoir & Love:** Renoir’s ultimate celebration of life and love, ‘Dance at the Moulin de la Galette’ is on display for the first time in the UK. Renoir is known for joyful social scenes, he loved painting lively gatherings of friends, dancers, and diners enjoying leisure time in Paris. The National Gallery are offering '**Pay what you wish**' entry to the Renoir & Love exhibition on some Friday evenings from late October onwards. Many slots on 23rd are already sold out so I suggest 18:15 on Fri 13 November. If this sells out by the time you book, try to go for a slot one earlier or later - we'll catch up inside the exhibition. I think this is an excellent way to see this exhibition because I certainly don't have pockets deep enough for the £25 standard ticket at weekend prices. The Getty entrance is for paid exhibition ticket holders.” – this is the ground level entrance, not the main portico with its steps, closer to Charing Cross Rd than the other entrances. Seeing as it’s Friday night, let’s go for a drink afterwards to socialise. The Horse and Guardsman pub on Whitehall has been good to us in terms of finding a table, we’ll try it (they do hot drinks and food too). There are other pubs in the area if it doesn’t come through.
