Then we head to the pub!** **THIS MONTH WE'RE VISITING THE EUROPE 1800-1900 GALLERY (ROOM 47)** The 19th century saw unprecedented economic growth in Europe, accompanied by immense social and political upheavals. For Britain, the 19th century was a period of stability and industrial supremacy. On the continent, France underwent three revolutions, while the second half of the century saw the unification of Germany and Italy. The nationalist sentiment that lay behind these events often paid homage to the great ages of the past. This is reflected in the objects shown in Room 47, many of which have borrowed motifs from earlier historical periods. During this period, international exhibitions fostered the growth of machine technology, yet traditional craftsmanship flourished alongside. **Read more** **[here](https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/galleries/europe-1800-1900).** **A Dracula Daily fan?:** Bram Stoker used the British Museum Reading Room to investigate maps, travel accounts, and folklore regarding Transylvania to write Dracula in 1897. In the opening chapter of Dracula, protagonist Jonathan Harker visits the British Museum library to research Transylvanian geography and Castle Dracula before his fateful journey. Portrait of a City: A Century of American Photography @ Dulwich Picture Gallery
Sat, Sep 5, 1:30 PM**Join us at the Dulwich Picture Gallery for the 'Portrait of a City: A Century of American Photography' exhibition.** Step into a century of American city life through photographs that capture the people who built, inhabited, and transformed urban spaces into living, breathing communities. The exhibition explores one hundred years of American urban life through the people who lived, worked, and moved through its streets. Featuring works by 34 influential photographers from 1907 to 2012, the exhibition traces how photography evolved alongside the modern city, capturing individuals and communities shaped by and shaping their environments. Set in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, the photographs reveal cities as dynamic stages for social change. From mass immigration and industrial growth to moments of counterculture and protest, photographers used urban spaces to examine identity, labour, and belonging. Adapting the traditions of portraiture, they recorded faces and lives that reflect the inner story of a nation in flux. Highlights include works by Alfred Stieglitz, Helen Levitt, Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and Bruce Davidson. Seen together, these portraits and cityscapes form a collective narrative that is both intimate and expansive, capturing the human experience at the heart of America’s evolving cities. **Read more here:** **[https://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/whats-on/portrait-of-a-city-a-century-of-american-photography/](https://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/whats-on/portrait-of-a-city-a-century-of-american-photography/)** **MEET DETAILS:** **FROM 1.45pm: MEET AT Dulwich Picture Gallery CAFE (optional)** Address: Dulwich Picture Gallery, 14 Gallery Road, London SE21 7AD Look out for the LoMAZ sign on the cafe table and host who will be wearing LoMAZ badges. **2.30pm: ENTER THE EXHIBITION** Address: Dulwich Picture Gallery, 14 Gallery Road, London SE21 7AD **4pm-Late: PUB SOCIAL (optional)** We'll head to a local pub for a social chit chat over drinks. *Location tbc 48 hours before event.* **TICKETS:** **You will need to purchase your own ticket for this event.** **Please book here:** **[https://secure.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/11813/11874](https://secure.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/11813/11874)** and choose the 2.30pm slot (or thereabouts). EVENT FULL V for Van Gogh House London
Sat, Aug 22, 2:30 PM**Join us at the Van Gogh House London for a guided tour at 3.30pm of the residence of a young Van Gogh from 1873-4.** 87 Hackford Road is a Grade II listed building that has been renovated and conserved by the Wang family. Built in the 1820s, by 2012 the property had fallen into a state of disrepair. Bordering on dereliction, the building was purchased at auction by James Wang and Alice Childs, who saw the potential to bring this cultural landmark back to life. Conservation works took place over the next 7 years, guided by an ambition to save as much existing material as possible, and making sensitive repairs where necessary. It was important for the house to remain first and foremost a dwelling – and not a museum, allowing it to remain in practical use as a home as well as a venue for artist residencies and exhibitions. Read more about the renovation project by following the links below. **MEET DETAILS:** **FROM 3.15pm: MEET AT/ AROUND the entrance of the building.** Address: 87 Hackford Road London SW9 0RE **3.30-4.45pm: GUIDED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM (Tour lasts around 75 minutes)** **5/5.15: PUB SOCIAL (optional)** We'll head to a local pub for a social chit chat over drinks. **TICKETS:** **You will need to purchase your own ticket for this event.** **Please book [here](https://www.tickettailor.com/events/vangoghhouselondon)** and choose the 3.30pm tour.
