For our final event for this year's **Art Appreciation Summer Special ' 26** we'll be going on a relaxed visit to the Tate Modern to view just **Five Great Paintings** together. Private View: Ali Katmiri @ London Art Bar

We are so excited to announce our first solo show at the LAB will be by the amazing **Ali Katmiri!** And we would love for you to join us for the private view on **Saturday 29th August from 6pm!** Ali Katmiri paints and photographs to reach the seeing and the feeling that come before language. The work comes from a daily practice he built for himself. In it he is both the artist and the audience. In one part he works as a performer-painter, in the other as a performer-photographer. Institutions choreograph the eye. They teach people where to look and what is worth looking at. In the photographs Katmiri uses abstraction to strip those distractions away and reach the layer of the world a child sees. That same direction of attention disciplines emotion. In the paintings he uses colour and canvas to put feeling outside the body directly, with no words and no explanation. He is not making meaning. He is opening a channel where emotion passes straight into colour and shape. Both halves of the practice ask the same question from two sides. How we look, and how we feel about what we are shown. **Tilt Your Head and A Subtle Turn / Colors Can See** is Ali Katmiris first solo exhibition. It brings together paintings and photographs from a daily practice he built for himself, one in which he is both the artist and the audience. Institutions choreograph the eye, teaching people where to look and what is worth looking at, and that same direction of attention disciplines what they feel. **Join us at the Dulwich Picture Gallery for the 'Portrait of a City: A Century of American Photography' exhibition.** Step into a century of American city life through photographs that capture the people who built, inhabited, and transformed urban spaces into living, breathing communities. The exhibition explores one hundred years of American urban life through the people who lived, worked, and moved through its streets. Featuring works by 34 influential photographers from 1907 to 2012, the exhibition traces how photography evolved alongside the modern city, capturing individuals and communities shaped by and shaping their environments. Set in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, the photographs reveal cities as dynamic stages for social change. From mass immigration and industrial growth to moments of counterculture and protest, photographers used urban spaces to examine identity, labour, and belonging. Adapting the traditions of portraiture, they recorded faces and lives that reflect the inner story of a nation in flux. Highlights include works by Alfred Stieglitz, Helen Levitt, Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and Bruce Davidson. British Museum: Europe 1800-1900 Gallery + pub social

**Unlike our regular events, this event has no attendee limit and we visit just ONE gallery in the British Museum.** **How does it work?: We meet and greet in the British Museum Court cafe first. Then we explore one room in the museum for 45 minutes - this is NOT a guided tour of the room, and you're free to wander around at your own pace. Then we head to the pub!** **THIS MONTH WE'RE VISITING THE EUROPE 1800-1900 GALLERY (ROOM 47)** The 19th century saw unprecedented economic growth in Europe, accompanied by immense social and political upheavals. For Britain, the 19th century was a period of stability and industrial supremacy. On the continent, France underwent three revolutions, while the second half of the century saw the unification of Germany and Italy. The nationalist sentiment that lay behind these events often paid homage to the great ages of the past. This is reflected in the objects shown in Room 47, many of which have borrowed motifs from earlier historical periods. In the opening chapter of Dracula, protagonist Jonathan Harker visits the British Museum library to research Transylvanian geography and Castle Dracula before his fateful journey. Friday evenings at the British Museum are an occasion for a wide range of events, including lectures, discussions, film screenings, special music and dance performances, many of which are related to current exhibitions. The British Museum's collection spans two million years, and includes cultural and historical exhibits from around the world. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- Schedule 7 : Group meets to attend British Museum's monthly Late. 9-12 : The group progress to a nearby bar. Being in London's Russel Square, local bars benefit from the energy, intrigue and dynamism that comes with the Central location - with a scholarly feel, - thrown in for effect!
