5th Sunday Event - Plant Trees in Oakland May 31st

Looking for a small but impactful way to help in the fight against climate change, and green your community over a weekend? Volunteer to plant trees! Our Tree Team plants trees in sidewalks all around Oakland. As these trees grow, they help to improve air quality, sequester carbon, and improve the environmental conditions of our neighborhoods. Many of the beautiful large trees you see along sidewalks are a result of our volunteers, and we still have so much more to do. No experience is required, but volunteers should be ready to do some digging and get a bit dirty. What: Planting trees along sidewalks and streets in Oakland for homeowners. After the training, we will split into smaller groups and drive to the sites. Who: You! Bring your friends and/or make new ones. No experience is needed. You should be able to lift 30 pounds (half the weight of a new tree). What to Bring: Wear closed-toed shoes, clothes that you can get dirty, and a hat for sun protection; bring your own water, lunch and a snack. We'll provide the shovels, picks, brooms, and gloves, but if you have your own please bring them along as we are short on supplies these days. If you are bringing a minor, please let us know. How: Dig a hole, take the tree out of its pot and put it into the ground, backfill the soil around the roots, and sweep the sidewalk clean. Profs & Pints Alameda: A History of Mythical Cures

[Profs and Pints Alameda](https://www.profsandpints.com/sfbayarea) presents: **“A History of Mythical Cures,”** on America’s longstanding tradition of selling false remedies in pursuit of fortune, with Vivian Delchamps Wolf, assistant professor of English at Dominican University of California and scholar of the portrayal of disability in literature. Who benefits from that desire? Explore tough questions related to our quests for cures with Vivian Delchamps Wolf, a scholar of disability studies, feminist studies, and race studies whose upcoming book *Resisting Diagnosis* examines how women’s disability literature of the nineteenth century altered notions of health and drove social change. She’ll trace the advocacy of mythical cures in the United States from the 19th century to today, unpacking how such cures were promoted in ways that reinforced eugenic beliefs and biases related to gender, ability, and race. She’ll describe how nineteenth-century medical authorities promised cures to capitalize off those seeking their care. You’ll learn about health spa owners who paid doctors to send them patients, sustaining the myth of the “water cure” that boosted California’s health tourism. We’ll look at how the “rest cure” was prescribed to women diagnosed with “hysteria” to force them into isolation. Women’s writings gave accounts of their desperation being exploited by male doctors who exerted control by prescribing “cures” that actually worsened symptoms, necessitating further care. We’ll consider the traveling medicine shows popularized in the West after the Civil War, examining how these performances involved music and aggressive rhetoric promoting “exotic” cure-alls such as snake oil. You’ll learn how white salesmen, in purporting to source ingredients from Native American and Chinese medicine, promoted harmful racial stereotypes for their own financial gain. Dr. Wolf will explore how curative and eugenic rhetoric persists in today’s wellness trends such as the promotion of “detoxifying” teas. In discussing the racialized and financial politics of medicine, she’ll offer a disability-centered perspective that challenges the assumption that bodies and minds need to be “fixed.” She’ll familiarize her audience with disability advocates who challenge the rhetoric surrounding “cures” and urge us to envision a future in which we seek to care for people rather than fix them. It’s hard to rank the films of Akira Kurosawa, who gave us Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High & Low, and Ran among his stunning 30-film career. But “Rashomon” (1950) makes most film lovers’ Kurosawa Top Ten and often Top Five - it’s the pivotal moment when multi-perspective storytelling entered mainstream cinema. Of course you might see this entirely differently…. The exhibition highlights a selection of San Francisco Legacy Businesses through historic photographs, signage, storytelling and archival materials that reflect the creativity, resilience and community connections built across generations. From neighborhood institutions to family-run storefronts, the featured businesses represent the people and places that continue to define San Francisco’s commercial corridors. Sausalito Jazz & Blues Festival

The 2026 Sausalito Jazz & Blues Festival by the Bay music series is free! Consider your Friday evenings booked from June to September. It's in Gabrielson Park. We can rent tables in the picnic area but it's more fun to layout blankets on the lawn near the stage and dance track. The lawn area is small so we have to get there early to claim a spot and this is a very popular music series. All the bands that I've seen over the years are excellent. A few requirements: low beach chairs/tables or sit on your blanket for max stage views. We'll be group dancing for sure. Bring your food & bev or try the food trucks and local vendors. The Oakland Rose Garden & Lakeshore Neighborhood's Pathways/Stairs Walk

FREE WALK. Now open for RSVPs. Free. We will meet at 11:00 AM in front of a cafe called Tierra Mia Coffee, on the corner of Broadway & 20th Street, so people on BART should go to the 19th Street BART Station and then they should exit at the 20th Street exit and our starting point is right across the street. One may bring a sack lunch or buy one at Tierra Mia Coffee. We won't have time for the group to buy lunches after we have started walking. It would be good if our attendees buy drinks or something at our starting point (Tierra Mia Coffee) &/or give tips so they will like us. Attendance limit is 70. Everyone should bring water, paper towels and a map. I love it when attendees bring cameras and upload their photos of the walk on our webpage. Dogs and other pets are not welcome. After Whole Foods Market we will walk to the Morcom Rose Garden to eat our sack lunches because it is the only location big enough for our group to eat lunch. We haven't done this walk since many years ago in the Covid days, and I changed it from a hard walk to a a nice relatively easy walk. We will see great things such as the Morcom Rose Garden in bloom, the Davie Tennis Stadium, and the Gardens at Lake Merritt, just to name a few. We expect to reach our ending point back at our starting point, the 19th Street BART Station at 4:45 PM. SFVS is joining the National Animal Rights Day (NARD) 16 in San Francisco! 🐾 This animal rights activism event will include: ● A Rally featuring esteemed speakers on the subject of animal rights. ● A March in support of the progress that is being made towards getting non-human animals legal rights to help end their suffering and promote their freedom. ● A Memorial Ceremony to commemorate the billions of animals who die every year by human hands.
