Grimebourn Dido and Aneas

Grimebourn Dido and Aneas

Thu, Aug 13, 6:00 PM
From London Classical Music & Theatre Group
4.7

Ensemble OrQuesta returns to Grimeborn with a revival of one of their most beloved productions, Dido and Aeneas. One of the oldest and most enduring in the English repertoire, Purcell’s operatic masterpiece gets a strikingly intimate, minimalist treatment in Arcola’s downstairs studio. Five performers bring to life a story of love, betrayal and abandonment that has moved audiences for over three centuries. Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, the opera follows the story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, who falls for the Trojan hero Aeneas, knowing he is destined to leave her. Helen May and Rosemary Carlton-Willis alternate the roles of Dido and the Sorceress – and on three of the five nights, the audience will choose who sings which role, decided on the spot before the performance begins.

Many good dancers, who are friendly and will happily dance with newcomers. [) George Tudor Hart Says about this Dance "There's a nine piece dance orchestra in white tuxedos, an area of the floor sectioned off as a large dance floor and seats for around 120 people. Free tea and cakes are served at around 1.30 pm, The dancers are a mix of locals who many of whom have lived in Spitalfields for yonks, and visitors from other parts of London. The music is good, quicksteps are in abundance, and there's some, but not too much, sequence dancing. When I was there the crowd were friendly, all could dance and were easy and obliging when asked to dance to ask to dance. Several were very good dancers. The area was sheltered and tea and cakes were served efficiently, and with style in China cups, not styrophone. There are clean public loos within in the market. The stalls in the market are interesting and varied, Some good hat shops are there, and Tracey Ermine's shop is around the corner outside the market.
