We will provide yarn, needles, hooks, clay, colouring pencils and books, origami paper, etc, or you can buy a colouring book from the store. You're also welcome to bring your own projects along. The bookstore provides a separate and private space for us which is perfect for us auties and ND folk. The store also provides free hot drinks. Accessibility: the store has an accessible entrance and toilet. The People's Letters is a worker-led, cooperatively run bookstore and community event space in East London. Using ceramic tiles and stained glass, we can choose an existing animal template or design our own, to create a square piece of art to take home. TEXTILE REPAIR - PATCHING- SASHIKO, BORO, APPLIQUÉ – 1 DAY

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese technique which transforms mends into visually striking additions to your well-loved clothing using repeated stitches. Translated to “little stabs”, the craft originated 400 years ago as a means to preserve clothing and embrace damage through creative stitch patterns. If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at this practical, yet aesthetic mending technique but didn’t know where to start, this is the perfect course for you. During the course, you will learn about the tools and materials necessary to start your mending journey as you are guided through a range of techniques which include sashiko and appliqué by experienced textile artist Selina Latour. You will learn other patching methods using hand stitch techniques used in patching such as herringbone, whip, slip and blanket stitches. WHITTLE A SPOON

If the idea of carving a spoon appeals to you, but setting out into a muddy wood and starting your learning by wielding an axe seems somewhat daunting, join us for a one-day course that will bypass all that and yet give you the immense satisfaction of watching a fully-fledged spoon emerge from your handiwork. Each spoon will be carved using seasoned wood and we will use Lime – a light, silky smooth and close-grained wood- used by great master carvers in St Paul Cathedral and stately homes. In one day, you will learn how to create a spoon from Lime wood- a traditional seasoned hardwood that holds detail and is a pleasure to carve with a cutout decoration detail in the handle. This can be a straight handle or a heart, but if you have an idea for a simple design, we can try and make this possible too. Your spoon will be a gift to keep for yourself or give to your loved one. This course is taught by Jon Hall, a talented professional City and Guild trained carver who teaches our one-day ‘Intro to Woodcarving’. We supply all the tools and materials and can advise you on which simple tools to buy to carry on this fascinating hobby. Love Spoons. In folk museums and heritage craft collections throughout Europe and the UK, you can sometimes see versions of these charming ‘Lovespoons’- some with one or two hearts carved out of their handles. The traditional lovespoon was made by a man who gave it to his beloved in order to show his skills and commitment. Her father would also have been able to see the man’s craftsmanship. Some of them are full of complex symbolism. A lock denoting security, a cross for faith, horseshoes for luck, bells for marriage and some including interlinked chains. As a ‘pastime’, many hours were spent on them and sailors passed their free time embellishing them with mermaids and anchors. One-day course 10.00 – 5.00pm.

INTRO TO WOODBLOCK PRINTING

No prior experience is required. **About:** Spend a day learning to cut a wood block to create layered relief prints. Printing onto paper. This one day course is a great introduction to the craft of reduction woodcut printing onto ‘Awagami’ paper. Even if you have never cut into a piece of wood or have any artistic experience, You will be able to explore your creativity and learn wood cutting methods to create prints. You will be guided through the techniques to carve your own woodblock, creating a layered image as the surface of the block is cut away at each stage, printing each new colour as you go. A single block will be carved and printed in layers, lightest to darkest, until a final unique piece reveals itself. You will learn to use different woodcarving tools to make various cuts into your woodblock taking inspiration from iconic Japanese woodcut prints (like The Great Wave of Kanagawa), well known artists, nature, and patterns to create your own design with guidance from tutor Ollie Norris, or perhaps you may already have your own designs in mind? The woodcuts are shallow and do not require great strength to make, so the workshop is open to all abilities. All use of tools and materials supplied Bring an apron or wear old clothes in case some of the paint jumps onto you.

WOODTURNING – PEPPERMILL

During this one-day woodturning workshop you will learn the ’Headstock method’ ‘Spindle turning,’ accurate drilling, fitting two parts together and decorative tips, to make a Peppermill. Discover the parts of the lathe and understand how to safely secure your work, the methods to use with each chisel and how to sand and finish your projects. You will start by turning a practice piece before moving onto the peppermill, using spindle turning techniques, learning to drill accurately and introducing the use of a woodwork chisel and tenon saw in the process. Making the peppermill will teach you how to make and fit two parts together. By creating a ‘spigot’ on the head of the mill to fit nicely into the body of the Peppermill. Suitable for those who have attended our pen and bowl making workshop however confident beginners are also welcome. Please join us for our June bring & share. The theme for this month is anything featured in films / TV shows / cartoons. You could make an apple pie (When Harry Met Sally), Cannoli (The Godfather), pink glazed donuts (The Simpsons) or chocolate chip cookies (Cookie Monster, Sesame Street)… etc. Sweet or savoury bakes. Punch Needle Embroidery Workshop

Join me at a punch needle workshop where you'll learn a beautiful new craft over coffee, croissants, and a glass of bubbly on arrival. With just six participants per session, this one stays wonderfully intimate – I’ll give everyone plenty of individual guidance, so you'll leave with a real handle on the fundamentals and the confidence to keep creating at home. You'll work on a cherry tomato vine wall hanging, starting with practice materials to get the hang of the punch needle technique before moving on to your main piece. This is a lovely way to meet like-minded people who share a love of making, whether you come solo or bring a friend along – you’ll leave with new skills, fresh inspiration, and a few new creative friends too. Everything's included: yarn, fabric, punch needle tool, embroidery scissors, and a hoop, along with practice materials so you can build confidence before starting your finished piece.
