Last Foliage Hike of the Season [9 miles, Train Access]

Last Foliage Hike of the Season [9 miles, Train Access]

Sun, Nov 8, 3:30 PM
From NYC Hiking And Nature Meetup
4.8

Come join me for the last (probably) foliage hike of the season! We'll do a loop past two lakes and over several great view points. Contact [Andre](http://www.meetup.com/New-York-City-Hiking/members/1650420) with any questions about this meetup. **Event guidelines:** * **This is a social event for hikers, not a guided hike**. We plan to stay together as a group, but everyone needs to be a self-sufficient hiker with adequate skills, equipment, and contingency plans to hike alone with a map or offline-GPS app (and the knowledge to use them) just in case. * **If you are not comfortable hiking** **self-sufficiently** **or are not experienced enough to judge the skill and physical requirements in the route description**, check out the [Appalachian Mountain Club’s](https://www.outdoors.org/) hikes or one of the many professional guides operating in the area. \*\*\* **Standard day-hiking gear:** * Hiking footwear (boots or trail shoes), non-cotton clothing, sunscreen, bug spray, sunhat, sunglasses. ([Permethrin insecticide](https://amzn.to/3XNcflS) treatment against ticks is great.) * Warm layers, including a winter hat and gloves in colder weather. Rain gear and an extra warm layer just in case. * Lunch, Snacks, and 2nd breakfast. 2 liters/ 2 quarts of water minimum, 3 liters for a hot day. Electrolytes for hot days, hot drinks for cold days. * **GPS app with offline maps** & battery pack: **Avenza Maps App** is free and there is a [free Harriman map in the in-app store](https://store.avenza.com/products/harriman-state-park-trail-map-new-york-state-parks-map?queryID=undefined&objectID=36438857941148). **CalTopo** ($20/yr) is an excellent general purpose GPS program. **Mapy** **App** has basic offline trail maps that are adequate. * **Map & Compass**: [NYNJTC Harriman-Bear Mountain Trails](https://amzn.to/422cHxd) or [National Geographic Harriman](https://amzn.to/3MOsk7d) *** **General FAQ:** * No dogs allowed, sorry * No guests beyond the RSVP guest limit and no one under 18 allowed * Hikes are generally rescheduled for thunderstorms, heat index >95f, or AQI >80 \*\*\* **Route Info:** * **The Stats:** About 8-9 miles, depending on conditions, with 1.1k' elevation gain at a moving pace of 2 mph. * **Track:** [Sebago-Skemonto-Claudius Loop](https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=13.3/-74.1436/41.2006&pubLink=KhOL136qZzAYzSiYYCKkgmTW&routeId=ca062906-b224-44a4-8297-1af5195af48e) (If you use AllTrails, you'll have to find a matching route or routes yourself.) * **For Your Contingency Planning:** Shorter routes and bailout points are available. Cell service is generally available but can be spotty. In terms of a navigation & route finding, these are Blazed Trails. \*\*\* **Logistics:** * **Meeting Location:** Meet at 10:30am at the Tuxedo commuter parking lot off East Village Road ([Google Maps](https://goo.gl/maps/aoABudbFJkjAKF926)). (Use the address 2 Powerhouse Ln, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987.) * Andre's Cell: ‪(720) 263-7347‬; texts preferred. * **Public Transit:** Take the 9:14 am NJ Transit train from Penn Station to Tuxedo Station, arriving at 10:29 am. The station is just around the corner from the parking lot where we are meeting. Catching the 4:20 train back should work, but that might require cutting the hike short. Alternatively, return on the 6:44 pm train, or one of the hourly trains from Suffern via Uber. * **Car Pooling:** Please use the comment section to organize carpooling, especially if you are driving from the city. Passengers should chip in for gas and tolls (usually about $10-$15). ***

Hiking the length of Manhattan from the North to South - 20 mile walk

Hiking the length of Manhattan from the North to South - 20 mile walk

Sat, Nov 7, 2:00 PM
From New York Backpackers
4.8

Let's walk or I guess "hike" the entire length of Manhattan from North to South. We will meet at the at 0900 at Mon Amour Coffee and Wine in Kingsbridge in The Bronx and walk all the way down to Staten Island ferry. We did this last year and it was such a blast so why not do it again! It is the day before the NYC marathon so perfect time do our own marathon at a slow poke pace. We will make stops for breakfast, lunch, beer or wine and dinner along the way. You can join in and out over the day but it is better if you come for the whole thing. Schedule that I am going to post is a rough one and we might be there earlier or later depending on our walking speed, etc. I will set up a WhatsApp chat the day before with live location if people want to catch up to us by subway or Citi bike. I picked a coffee shop in Kingsbridge so we could walk down to Marble Hill and start from the north border of Manhattan. Kingsbridge used to be an actual bridge that separated The Bronx from Manhattan until the Harlem River was landfilled and now it is just the neighborhood where the northern end of the bridge used to lie. The River itself was too shallow and narrow for boats so a canal was dug out on the southern end of Marble Hill turning Marble Hill briefly into an island until the river was landfilled on the north side. Marble Hill then became attached to The Bronx and became a Manhattan enclave in The Bronx. We will meet at Mon Amour Coffee and Wine at 0900 and start our walk, saunter or hike from there. https://maps.app.goo.gl/WTaRNkEZtiZUhtM77 **Rough schedule:** 9h00 Mon Amour Coffe and Wine next to the 238th St Station in The Bronx 9h45 Stop at Inwood Farms for brunch 11h00 Leave Inwood Farm 11h30 The Cloisters 14h00 Central Park North and Adam Clayton Powell 16h00 Playa Betty's for late lunch or early dinner 17h30 Leave Playa Betty's 19h30 Stop at Brass Monkey for drinks 20h30 Leave Brass Monkey 21h30 Arrive at the Staten Island Ferry 22h00 Dinner at Hey Thai on John St This is roughly a 20 mile walk. Bring a water bottle. Restaurants we stop at and bars will be happy to refill your bottle for you. Bring comfortable shoes. If you want bring two pairs of shoes and socks. Some people find it easier on their feet to switch shoes and socks halfway through. If we end up with a big crowd I would prefer to give priority to those who can commit to doing the whole thing. Last year we finished with 5 out of 20 while a group did the same thing and everyone in their group finished. Commitment would be awesome!!!

Shenandoah Hiking, Winery, And Sunsets Weekend

Shenandoah Hiking, Winery, And Sunsets Weekend

Fri, Oct 30, 11:00 AM
From Explorer Chicks of NYC
4.4

**Summits And Sips** Imagine finally treating yourself to a girls’ weekend. Only instead of sitting on someone’s living room floor fielding texts from your partner (“WHERE IS MY PRESCRIPTION NASAL SPRAY”) you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail. Eating picnics you didn’t have to pack. And tossing back Virginia wine with women who make you laugh until a you pee a little. Trade the daily hustle for mountain magic with the ultimate long weekend hiking in Shenandoah National Park. This is a more laid-back hiking adventure––active without being hardcore. We’ll explore sections of the Appalachian Trail by day, including Mary’s Rock, Whiteoak Canyon, and Hawksbill Mountain. And we’ll savor golden sunset hikes to Bearfence and Stony Man before our evening PJ parties. Our SHE-nanigan Shuttle will be conveniently parked to save us from sweary uphill climbs, whisking us away to our trailheads, an afternoon wine tasting, and our picturesque lodges with local, chef-made meals. This much beauty and sisterhood in one long weekend will feel illegal. But we promise the park rangers won’t kick us out. **See the website for full itinerary, details and to book.** [https://explorerchick.com/trip/womens-shenandoah-hiking-winery-and-sunsets-weekend/](https://explorerchick.com/trip/womens-shenandoah-hiking-winery-and-sunsets-weekend/) **Say Hello 👋** **💻** Website: [https://explorerchick.com/](https://explorerchick.com/) 📧 Email: [hello@explorerchick.com](http://hello@explorerchick.com/) 📸 Instagram: [https://www.instagram.com/explorerchickadventureco/](https://www.instagram.com/explorerchickadventureco/) ❤️ Facebook: [https://www.facebook.com/ExplorerChickAdventureCo/](https://www.facebook.com/ExplorerChickAdventureCo/) 👯‍♀️ Facebook Group: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/weareexplorerchick](https://www.facebook.com/groups/weareexplorerchick) 🎥 TikTok: [https://www.tiktok.com/@explorerchick](https://www.tiktok.com/@explorerchick)
