Human hearted community of practice (COP)
Sun, Jun 14, 1:00 AM**Event summary:** The monthly human hearted community of practice (COP) is both a support group, and a mutual encouragement group, for people who want to explore living a more human hearted life. The COP is part of Human Hearted Sydney's goal of building community. Please feel free to join us for a session if you're interested. **Who is the COP for ?** The COP is for people who dislike the alienation and emptiness of our modern finance driven society, and are looking for a new form of community - one based on the reality of our human social capacities such as sympathy and friendship, rather than based on returning to religion and other traditional practices. If you would like to be part of building a supportive community for living out socially positive values in today’s world we encourage you to come along and check it out. **Some background: The meaning problem modern society faces -** The development of modern society has seen the destruction of earlier systems of meaning, like religion and tradition. They have not been replaced by a new set of ethics or community, but by market values and hyper individualism. This has created a world of material wealth in which far too many people feel insecure, alone, and unlikely to succeed. We now live in an atomised society in which each person suffers alone and there is no form of community, or meaning other than material wealth, to sustain them. This has led to substantial increases in loneliness and mental health issues like anxiety in modern society. Now there is even a category called ‘[deaths of despair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disease_of_despair#:~:text=The%20three%20disease%20types%20are,%2C%20West%20Virginia%2C%20and%20Delaware.)’ that refers to people whose reliance on drugs, alcohol etc. to numb their isolation from society leads to their early death. **More background: The solution we will look at -** The obvious solution to the collapse of values in modern society is to build alternative forms of community. Many groups try to achieve this by calling for a return to religious values, or building new religions. As humanists we do not turn to religion but the best of the human potential to provide a foundation for community groups. [Human heartedness](https://web.archive.org/web/20240109160949/https://areomagazine.com/2022/05/05/a-human-hearted-modernity/) is an approach to life which sees humans as inherently social beings. It is backed both by many famous thinkers of the past, and by the findings of recent neuroscience and evolutionary studies which show the path to human happiness and fulfillment is more dependent on building good relationships and positive social connection than on competition and being purely ‘rational’. So one part of the solution to the existential emptiness of modernity is for people to build small communities; groups of like minded people who want to live in a more human hearted way, and support each other to live better in the face of modernity’s onslaught. There are other parts of the solution of course. However in relation to this event our focus is on setting up a COP to support each other to practice living in a more human hearted way, and to provide communal support generally in today’s disenchanted world. **Basic structure of this meeting:** The meeting will be facilitated by a member of the Sydney humanist community and will involve a brief talk explaining human heartedness and the problems of modernity. Then we will proceed to conduct our regular COP meeting. The meeting will finish with a Q/A and discussion period, followed by a lunch and more informal discussion. **Donations:** While this event is free, we would be grateful if you chose to make a [donation](https://www.humanistsaustralia.org/donate) to sustain Humanists Australia which would help it to continue delivering events that serve the community in Sydney. **Please note Date Time and Venue:** In June 2026 the meeting will be held on the second Sunday of the month (June 14th) at 11:00AM. The venue is level one of Darling Square Library. The room we'll be in is called Idea Space 2 **Directions:** The venue is a ten minute walk from both Town Hall and Central station. The Darling Square Library is part of a hive-shaped building called The Exchange. The Idea Spaces are on level one of The Darling Square Library which is accessible via elevators facing towards Darling Square and stairs which are on the other side of the building. Please ask the library staff if you need assistance finding where we are in the library.

Volleyball Competition, Dinner & Drinks
Sat, Jun 6, 5:30 AM💰**Competition** If we have enough people we will run the competition. Join Whatsapp Group: (If failed to join on whatsapp, DM me your number I can add you myself) [https://chat.whatsapp.com/H5ja11KunFkIKFcpRKEVbP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/H5ja11KunFkIKFcpRKEVbP) ℹ️ **Game plan** **Competition 3:30pm - 7:30pm** **Dinner 7:45pm** The idea is to have fun and win a price $$ in a competition. We will be having a competition and 1 team will win a price at the end and the winning price is 70% of the total entry fees. 30% percent will go towards our group budget. You will be in a team of 5 players or less or more. Choosing a team - randomly counted by the organiser, if your number is #2 then you will be playing with a player who is counted as #2 and compete with other team. If your team wins then you will compete with the other winning team. Will play a game from last winning team until the end of competition. Losing team will not have a chance to win. We cannot always determine how many people attending, some will arrive early and some will arrive a little later. Late comers will still have chance to be in the competition. But you must arrive **15 mins early** before the game. Depending on how many players in a last winning team. If your team have won the final game and no late comers to challenge you during the competition period. Your team automatically win the price. We want to make sure every attendees gets a chance to play the competition. If you are late, you will be registered to be in a team and you will be competing with the people who already won the game to win the price and must win higher points than the winning team. If the team your competing against has already won once or your late arrival team must won more than the other team your competing with. To make it fair, new team points is 0 until your team has won and gain a point. So if you have been playing and your team has won a game of first to 21 scores during the battle your team gets a point of 1. Your team point goes up every time your team wins. **📃 Game Rules** \- Score first to 21 points \- No kicking or head butting the ball\, will make the other team score \- Serving the ball must be outside the line \- No touching the net at all times \- No blocking a serve \- Can only pass the ball twice\, third must hit the ball towards the opposing team \(total 3 hits\) if 4 hits will make the other team score \- When the ball drops outside the court line is out\, on the line or in the court line is in \- 1 team reached match point to win \- if both teams reached match point\, score two more points to win \- if your team lost once your team is out of competition and you are not allowed to join other team to compete or form a new team **📃 Winning Cases** **Case #1** \- last winning team of 6 people\, will win the price at the end if only no more late comers to challenge your team\. **Case #2** \- last winning team of 5 people\. automatically win the price if only no more late comers to challenge your team\. **Case #3** \- last winning of 4 people will win the price at the end if only no more late comers to challenge your team\. **Case #4** \- last winning team of 3 people\, So 3 people automatically win the price if only no more late comers to challenge your team\. **$30 competition fee cash or payID** 30% goes to meetup cost, equipment and game management Our attendees numbers usually around 30 to 100+ people RSVP per event. Last competition had 40+ people. So if we have 40 attendees, each pay $30 competition fee that's a total fees of $1,200 dollars. Not always the case! 70% of that fees is the winning price and 30% set aside for game management, equipment and meetup cost. So $1,200\*0.70= $840 is the total winning price divided by your team players and will be paid in cash or payID after the game. The other 30% is to cover the meetup cost, equipment, nets, balls, photos, videos and music and further improve and manage our events. Losing teams is out of competition, and can continue to play for social games. **Sydney Beach Events/We are NOT liable for any injuries, health issues or damage costs. You are playing at your own risk.** **First aid kit will be available if needed.** **👜 What to bring with you** **Lots of Water**, **sunscreen**, **SHOES**, **ID** or **passport** to enter to any venue in Coogee. 🏖️ **What we will have during this event** 3 Gazebos for sun cover, JBL speaker, nets & balls, and some water. 🛡️ **Follow Rules** **1.** Respect each other's boundaries, race, backgrounds and beliefs. **2.** You must avoid any conflict, arguments or any potential confrontation. **3.** You must remain friendly & respectful to ALL players & event host. **4.** You must listen to host game plan & directions. please ask questions if you must. **5.** Avoid any cancellation, or if you must, notify the host 1+ day prior to the event. **6.** All **RSPVed members must attend the event.** **7.** We promote a positive and fun environment, you must remain respectful and friendly to all the members in the group.
