Feminism, Horror, and Speculative Fiction

Join author-translator Tiffany Tsao and author-scholar Intan Paramaditha for a conversation around their respective new and forthcoming novels, *But Won't I Miss Me* (HarperCollins) and *Night of a Thousand Hells* (Europa). What is it about the tropes associated with horror and speculative writing that lend themselves to feminist modes of literary expression? **TIFFANY TSAO** is the author of *Under Your Wings*, which was longlisted for the Ned Kelly Award and released in the US as *The Majesties*. Her translations of Indonesian fiction and poetry have been awarded the NSW Premier’s Translation Prize and PEN Translation Prize, as well as longlisted for the International Booker Prize. She holds an English PhD from UCBerkeley and works as Deputy Editor at the Sydney Review of Books. *But Won’t I Miss Me* is her fourth novel. **INTAN PARAMADITHA** is the author of *Apple and Knife*, part of the Vintage Classics Weird Girls series, and *The Wandering*, winner of the PEN Translates Award and longlisted for the Stella Prize. 15.6kms Incredible Coastal Hike & Secret "Sunday Sippers" Beach Bar!

Team. Don't miss this event. What a hike... and what a bar. We've found another **"How in the world did you find this bar MJ?"** type joints to *wet our whistles* together! It's directly on the beach. And it's only open one day per month for "SUNDAY SIPPERS" with live music. **Palm Beach Lighthouse** to **Newport Beach with Bilgola Beach and Sunday Sippers!** It's 15kms of coastal excellence and elegance. Let's goooooooooooooooo! We hiked this hike on the weekend (my first time). It's 10/10. ***The lighthouse view. The beaches. The lookouts. The rockpools. The whales (and seals we saw).The home architecture. All incredible...*** Now it's time to add an unforgettable beach bar. **SUNDAY SIPPERS.** Prior to hiking the full hike I did a little test run of the finale of this event to be sure the hiking path is open (it is) as council constructs a new sidewalk. While down on Bilgola Beach, I noticed their Surf Life Saving Club... totally empty but with this cool back garden, BBQ, and a set-up that would be fahkin' perfect for an afternoon beer. I walk around the corner and find their "Sunday Sippers" sign, and they open at 330pm on the last Sunday of the month. This is our spot for a drink, and it will be a great place to "Cheers" a memorable hike. When we finish, there's a bus stop at Bilgola Beach or we can finish the hike and jump on the bus at Newport Beach. **THE DAY.** A few things... a) First... if you join this event, **you must have a face pic on your MeetUp profile**, and you must come back here and **[click on this WHATSAP LINK](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DZpwgwsBSso2nXz9ap1yug)**. This is where we meet. Transfer at this stop to transfer to **199 Bus**. Be early. There’s a Coles, bathroom, bakery, coffee shop, etc... there. b) **DRIVERS**. Park by 11am at the latest. Please DIY research for parking at Mona Vale... side streets, or there's a free "Park & Ride" when using your Opal Card which you will. d) We all meet, and jump on the **199 Bus at 11:14am which drops at Palm Beach Golf Club. We start hiking there…** e) We finish at Newport Beach. The 199 Bus drops at Mona Vale where your cars (and B1 bus begins for us bus folks) are parked. *Bus up. Hike down. **Hey guys!!!!** Welcome to Sydney Beach Events Volleyball! Beginner, Intermediate & Advance Beach Volleyball, then Dinner at the Restaurant **ℹ️ Info** Maintain a healthy active lifestyle, get our bodies moving and enjoy the beauty of the beach, socialise, and play a game during a cool sunny, rainy weather. Maintain respect to each other's space. 🎫**Event Fee** Event Fee is **3 AUD** from each attendees to help pay meetup cost, buy new nets, balls & other equipment for the events. *Tap to pay using card or phone at the event or cash.* **🏐Who is it for** All Level Players - Beginners, Intermediates to Advanced. For all ages - most of the people that came to our events are in their 20s & 30s. If you are beginner, please don't hesitate to ask our organisers for quick run down of passing and serving. If you are not a beginner, help or encourage beginners how to play better. Follow our rules below.*** 📌V**olleyball Game Rules** * Max 3 hits per team * A block does not count as one of the 3 hits * Encourage passing or setting the ball to your team mates * No double hits (except after a block) * No touching the net * Serve behind the line * Ball out = point to other team * No catching, kicking or throwing the ball * Rotate when your team wins the serve from the opponents * If your team is already serving and wins the point → no rotation * Communication is encouraged to avoid collisions (Say mine! or my ball) * No interference or distraction of the opposing team * Fix the net if loosen * Play safe and communicate with team mates * Help setup/pack up the nets and balls * Do not lose any pins * **Avoid kicking the ball as sand can hit other people's eyes** We will be playing 6v6, 5v5, 4v4 at Coogee Beach on rotation so that everyone who attends gets a chance to play. We will have 2-3 nets for everyone. **Winning team stays, losing team allow next team to play. Or both teams allow next teams to play if we have a lot of people waiting.** The idea is to play the game and go to a restaurant/bar after for more socialising, game activities. **🍽️🍖🍺🍸Dinner Time** **(Bring shoes, passport or driver license to get into any venue)** *Let us know if you are joining dinner.* Beach Burrito Co or Chargrill Charlie's Coogee, or Coogee Hotel, Coogee Pavillion for food and drinks. **6:30/6:45pm-9:30pm** **Dinner** (Non Daylight Savings Time) **8:15pm-10:00pm** **Dinner** (Daylight Savings Time) Extra: Bring card games or any other game ideas for during dinner or after dinner to make socialising more fun. Those who want to bring food and drinks at the beach to enjoy during the game are free to do so, **do not throw your rubbish on the beach, take your rubbish with you or bin it.** **🎒What to bring with you** Water, sunscreen, hat and jacket in case of unexpected weather. **SHOES**\*, ID or PASSPORT\*\* to enter to any venue in Coogee. **🪧Safety**: For your safety, please look after one another and ensure you and others are safe and comfortable. **🎚️All Levels** **Beginners**, **intermediate** and **advanced** players are welcome. Those who attend and waiting for the next game, introduce, socialise and get to know as many people as you can. Be kind and respectful. **💚Beginners** Are encouraged to spend the first 15-30 minutes practice serving, passing, hand/arm positioning, spiking the ball with intermediate/advance players. Raise hands and let us know if you are a beginner. Organisers and other players will be happy to do a quick practice with you. For your own safety\, swimming at the beach is not part of this event\, if you are going for a swim\, swim between the flags & with friends\. Swimming alone at the beach is not recommended\. If you cannot swim do not swim\. You will be swimming at your own risk\.** **9\. Report any suspicious activities\, crossing boundaries\, negative remarks\, criticisms\, violence & any misbehavior\. Reports will be taken into consideration\, serious offenders will be banned from the group and all our social platforms or reported to authorities\.
