We’ll bring the tools you need, but if you have saws, files or rasps, bring them. It’s not that hard to make a good functional gourd. We used to each make one before a week at Dirttime, and then if we cut it just right, we’d have a dish, and a bowl. Bushcraft skills? Survival Skill? Whatever you call it, it’s a great skill, and a great opportunity to meet with like-minded people. $45 ($30 students/seniors) Please register to attend and for location. We’ll be in a section of the Arroyo Seco and learn about some the history and unique plant-life of the area. We’ll see edible and medicinal plants on our short walk, and will learn some basics about making cordage, nets, and bags. You will practice hands-on making cordage, nets, bags, brushes, etc. A very good introduction to this ancient art. Bring your canteen. Location — you’ll get details upon registration. $45 ($30 senior and students). Please register to attend and for location. October 17 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm $45.00 – $65.00 Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m. CONTAINER WORKSHOP: LEARN TO MAKE AN EXPEDIENT BURN BOWLJulia Han shows a burn bowl made by Christopher from a burl As part of our Container series, we have taught how to make clay bowls (from local clays), how to make baskets, how to process gourds, how to make yucca and agave quivers, how to make soap stone bowls (yes, a slow process!), and this time, how to make a burn-bowl. A burn bowl is a piece of a log that we slowly burn out with coals, and then scrape it out to create a useful bowl. You will learn by doing. We begin with a dry log, and cut select pieces. Then we split them, and you will slowly burn them out to create a functional bowl. In fact, there are many items that can be made by this process. We will create coals in our fire, which you will then carefully put onto your wood. You let it burn a bit, and then you scrape. You create a little hole, and then you add another coal, and repeat, and repeat. Bring a spoon for scraping. Bring eye protection too. Sometimes this goes quickly, and sometimes not, so bring your water and a snack. Probably Hahamongna, but we will send location to registrants. Limited participation. $65 ($45 seniors/students)

We will go on a short walk to explore an area and learn about the wild plants, and their edible and medicinal uses. We will study the diverse flora and we’ll have an opportunity to make a fire and do some light cooking.Students examining fresh chicken-of-the-woods Come and enjoy your time outdoors learning about plant and how they can be used for teas, salads, soups, and medicines. Also you’ll learn about those plants used for fire in a traditional manner.

Class topics include uses of wild plants for food and medicine, storing food and water, sources of water you hadn’t thought about, finding and purifying water, what to do when the power goes out, alternatives to the flush toilet, emergency shelters, tools, first aid, contents of a “survival pack,” and more. There’s really SO MUCH that could be covered so bring your notebook and bring your questions! We cover all the basics, and answer the many questions you may have. Taught by Christopher Nyerges.

LUNCHTIME FIRE WORKSHOP SURVIVAL, BUSHCRAFT, SELF-RELIANCE! Primitive skills are very popular, and the ability to make fire without matches is at the top of the list. We will practice a few of the primitive methods of fire-starting methods, and you will learn some of the secrets that come from years of experience. You will get to practice the bow drill, the hand drill, flint and steel, and more. We will also go for a short walk (if time) so you can see the types of woods that are best for making fire, and the tinders that are best for getting your fire to light. And enjoyable gathering. Bring a bowl and water. And yes, you will learn about a few wild plants at this class as well. Location sent when you register — most likely Hahamongna. Please register to attend and for location. **INFORMATIONAL POSTING ONLY-See Website** **[www.wildernesstravelcourse.org](http://www.wildernesstravelcourse.org/)** Dear Group Members, particularly the recent swell of new, never-been-backpacking-before-but-want-to-start members: There is a great Sierra Club opportunity that is about to begin….an opportunity that only happens one time each year and it is one of the best outdoor learning experiences the Sierra Club has to offer. This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competent hiking off-trail, snow travel, rock scrambling techniques, first aid, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips, most of which take place in the High Sierra, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months. WTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. You will acquire skills in trip planning, preparation, equipment and wilderness safety to take you into the backcountry in all seasons, beyond roads and trails with new friends that share your interest in the outdoors. Join me for a 3 day weekend where you can car camp, hike, backpack or just relax at the most popular campground in San Bernardino mountains. Hiking schedule: Friday 3 easy miles hike around the campground with option of potluck. Saturday hike or backpack to Deep Hot Springs 5 to 6 hard miles. Depending of the weather. Sunday 4.6 miles moderate to Arrowhead Pinnacles trail Monday drive back home. This event is limited to 8 people per day. Two cars per site with 3 tenths carpool is encourage. strong hikers/backpackers only. what to bring: We will share the camp fee so bring cash It will be $20 per night per person or $40 per the weekend per person. What your $ Includes: camp fee/holiday fee, campfire, and hot drink. Bring your own gear, drinking water, sun screen, hat, hiking sticks and food. If you are backpacking only you can meet us at the trail head out of the 173 Hwy. parking is free. We will hike about 2.5 miles to the hot springs. Spend the night and enjoy the hot springs. We return to a familiar neighborhood for a morning doubleheader! Start with a gentle walk through a little-known section of a little-known corner of NELA, rife with solid local architecture and one street that is so steep the sidewalk has stairs! Then we immediately go on a green, leafy walk through one of Pasadena's western-most neighborhoods, filled with charming stairways and a virtual arboretum of mixed tree varieties. You can ponder the Dodgers record-tying 14th consecutive post-season appearance as you hike 1,300 stairs. During a timeout we'll talk about the upcoming Wilderness Travel Course to get you ready for outdoor adventures. Meet at 9:30am in front of the old-timey Cindy's Restaurant, Colorado Boulevard and Townsend Avenue (1500 Colorado Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90041). Street parking is limited so arrive early and be prepared to sign the required Sierra Club waiver. Bring water and wear good walking shoes. Heavy rain cancels.
