**Distance 12+ miles // Elevation 2,000+ feet** The El Prieto Loop, sometimes referred to as ‘JPL’ because of its proximity to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is one of many options for epic riding in the San Gabes. We will climb up Brown Mountain to the saddle, then continue climbing up Brown Mountain to the Ken Burton Trailhead, before descending either Ken Burton or back down to the saddle and taking El Prieto. El Prieto means “The Dark One” in Spanish. The name comes from an early homesteader in 1865 named Robert Owen, an African American, who settled there and became a staple of the developing community. After his death, John and Owen Brown, two brothers and prominent abolitionists who fought for the Union, built a cabin on the adjacent land. Their charisma and love for nature helped to cultivate the mountain community. The peak above El Prieto is named after the Brown boys and Owen’s grave is still visible in El Prieto Canyon. **ADVANCED BLUE** *You have a strong understanding and practice with braking, shifting, cornering, and descending skills. You can navigate variable terrain at a good pace. You are confident and comfortable riding singletrack trails and can easily navigate roots, rocks, mud, sand, and creek crossings. You are capable of a front wheel and rear wheel lift and can put the two together to navigate over obstacles. You are fairly confident on steep climbs and descents, but you may walk sections on Black or Double Black trails.* **[LINK TO RIDE LEVEL CHART FOR MORE DETAILS](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lK2QCFW94SM-J3m2cUEvDxXYxsdsMSkvypyenjK2oq8/edit?usp=sharing)** **LIABILITY RELEASE & WAIVER** *If you are new to AMTR, please bring a signed and completed waiver to the ride for the ride leader or email it to: AMTR.Meetup@gmail.com. You will be asked to sign a Waiver if you do not have one on file with us. If you refuse to sign, you will not be allowed to join the meetup event.* **[READ, SIGN, AND EMAIL YOUR WAIVER](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k2G2x-3WT9JSdQDOFoEZrtZmtu8sB_BO/view?usp=sharing)** **BIKING ESSENTIALS** *Please bring your own biking essential needs like tools, pump, hydration pack, chain link, gloves, energy gel/bar, snacks, camera, and most importantly a HELMET. Knee and elbow pads are NOT a must, but are suitable for extra protection.* **DISCLAIMER** *The Organizer, Assistant Organizers, Volunteers, Ride leaders, and Event Organizers in this group are not professional guides.
