Often one is asked: "*What is your favourite place?*" One place leaving a most indelible mark is the sandstone outcrops of the Weald. So many happy fulfilling days and memories. These began in the Lower Cretaceous as sands accumulating in the shallow inland Wealden sea. The sands hardened over epochs into rocks. which may now be found hiding in the fields and forests all round the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Passing among the woods with their outcrops is the Spa Valley Railway, whose steam trains add colour & sound, and a sense of nostalgia to the landscape. And this weekend the railway holds its annual Ale and Cider Festival, with food stalls, and free live music at its stations, as well as the heritage trains chugging to and fro along the line all day. A Spa Valley walk of autumn colours, unique rock formations, and stations visited along the line to sample the festivities. Further details of the Festival are here: https://spavalleyrailway.co.uk/events/real-ale-cider-festival/ TRAVEL: Take the 9.39 train from London Bridge to TUNBRIDGE WELLS. Walk starts 10.40 AM from Tunbridge Wells station. Circular walk The organizer will be standing from 9.15 am in front of the ticket office to act as a focal point for people to arrange Groupsave tickets. An off peak day return to TUNBRIDGE WELLS is £14.15 with Groupsave or a Network card and will cover all travel. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section! A walk to enjoy the exceptional autumn colours of Epping Forest, and its viewpoints overlooking happy autumn fields, following a route in the spirit of the 1962 edition of London Transport's *Country Walks.* In their words "this circular walk explores where the forest widens. You will find an abundance of beech, oak, hornbeam and birch trees, and a dense undergrowth of hawthorn, blackthorn and bramble. Rabbits and squirrels are for ever crossing your path, but to catch a glimpse of a stoat, weasel or deer, you must be more patient and searching." Pub / cafe stops at High Beach and Upshire Alfred Tennyson lived beside the forest - the walk's viewpoints overlook his house. In his words we'll be "*looking on the happy autumn fields, And thinking of the days that are no more."* TRAVEL & WALK DETAILS Walk start at 10.30 from LOUGHTON tube station (Zone 6). Circular walk. Oyster contactless & travelcards cover all travel. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ *What to bring* * Plenty of water, 1-2 litres recommended * Enough snacks and packed lunch to keep you energized along the walk * Extra snacks and an extra packed lunch just in case * Rainproof (ideally waterproof) clothing, sturdy shoes/boots you don't mind getting muddy * Spare socks * Walking poles and/or an umbrella :-) * Yourself... * ...and your camera! * Cash for train ticket * Cash for pub at the end of the walk? On John Evelyn's birthday in 1620 a walk that's all about the trees, bathing in autumnal splendour 🍁🍂. And on Halloween a sprinkling of spookiness along the way 👻 Evelyn was the father of forestry, and a 17th-C conservation visionary. A founder of the Royal Society, widely travelled, campaigner for hospitals, diarist. And above all, passionate about trees. The walk heads to Wotton House, his home. Home too to the ghost of Dr Samuel Wilberforce looking through its window👻. Then we head into the North Downs woods through which Evelyn wandered, past the Witches' Tree 🎃 *Sylva* could well be written today: "*Truly, the waste and destruction of our woods has been so universal, that I conceive nothing less than a universal plantation of all the sorts of trees will supply, and well encounter the defect."* TRAVEL & WALK DETAILS Take the 9.41 train from London Victoria to DORKING. Walk starts from Dorking station at 10.40. An off peak day return ticket to DORKING is £10.50 with a Network card or Groupsave. Walk ends at WESTHUMBLE. Lunchtime pub stop. Bring a packed lunch. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself.
