ā›°ļø (Lake District) Hiking Scafell Pike – The Highest Mountain in England

From London Social Hiking

################# **This hike is now FULL.** **We’ve created a list of [FAQs](https://drive.google.com/file/d/12gIZWTLfA3zQsx1fb0lpv1zOWP2vC5tq/view?usp=drive_link) to help answer your questions.** ################# The Lake District is England's largest national park and by far the most popular in the UK. Every year, some 19 million people pitch up to explore the region's mountains and countryside, and it's not hard to see why. Its postcard panorama of craggy hilltops, mountain tarns and glittering lakes has been stirring the imaginations of visitors for centuries. In 2017, the Lake District was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, joining the likes of the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China and the Grand Canyon on the illustrious list. It was the UK’s first national park to be given such status. On the first day of our trip, we'll summit Scafell Pike – the highest mountain in England, rising to 978 metres above sea level. We'll do our walk from Wasdale valley, which offers the shortest and the most popular approach to the peak. The route starts at almost the sea level, by ascending alongside Lingmell Gill. After crossing the river, the path then leads to Hollow Stones and Lingmell Col, before the final rocky ascent to Scafell Pike. Throughout the whole hike, we'll enjoy superb views of Wast Water, England's deepest lake, the surrounding peaks and dramatic crags. After the hike, we'll drive to our hotel, where we'll have dinner and rest. Sunday will be much more relaxing! Today's walk is low-level, and will take us around two of the prettiest lakes in the Lake District – Grasmere and Rydal Water. We'll visit the large cavern of Rydal Cave, with its stepping stones. This famous Lakeland beauty spot is actually man-made, and is the result of slate quarrying over 200 years ago. We'll climb Loughrigg Fell (335m) and enjoy amazing panoramic views (it's often from the lower hills that you get the best views!). The hike will finish at Grasmere village, where we'll have lunch and visit the famous Grasmere Gingerbread Shop – an absolute must-do in the Lakes! **ITINERARY** **Saturday:** **06:45** Meet outside Hotel Novotel London West, 1 Shortlands, W6 8DR (a five-minute walk from Hammersmith Station) **07:00** Sharp departure **07:00-14:30** Transfer, with two stops at services (30 and 15 minutes) **14:30-19:00** Hike to Scafell Pike from Wasdale Head (difficulty: [Difficult](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BMjvqhAAdSeCdyzLPHs0z04_e2TiKdci/view?usp=sharing), distance: 9km, ascent: 910m) **20:00** Check-in at Premier Inn Whitehaven Hotel, dinner and free time **Sunday:** **07:00** Breakfast **08:00** Departure **09:00Ā-13:30** Rydal Water and Grasmere circular walk, via Rydal Cave and Loughrigg Fell (difficulty: [Moderate](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BMjvqhAAdSeCdyzLPHs0z04_e2TiKdci/view?usp=sharing), distance: 11km, ascent: 530m) **13:30-15:00** Lunch in Grasmere, one of the prettiest villages in the Lake District; free time to visit the famous Grasmere Gingerbread Shop and buy souvenirs **15:00** Departure **19:00** Stop at services for dinner **21:00** London, Hammersmith **DIFFICULTY & EQUIPMENT** Please note that this trip requires a good level of fitness. London to Paris via Avenue Verte - Call For Interest

London to Paris via Avenue Verte - Call For Interest

Mon, Jun 8, 11:00 AM
From Wild Cycling - Off-Road Cycling At Its Best!
5.0

A call for interest in this once in a lifetime classic ride from London to Paris. Please put your name down if you really have a **serious** interest in doing this ride. No time wasters please as life is too short! This is a four day ride of approx 250 miles from the London Eye to the Eiffel Tour in Paris. The route follows the Avenue Vert using country lanes and traffic free cycling paths. The first day is Monday and our route takes us from London to Newhaven where we take the overnight ferry to Dieppe at a cost of around £40. From Dieppe we have the choice of two routes the longest is around 150 miles so we will plan accommodation en-route for the Tuesday and Wednesday nights arriving in Paris on Thursday afternoon. We shall stay overnight in Paris on the Thursday picking up bike bags from the hotel as we cannot transport fully assembled bikes on Eurostar. We plan to catch an afternoon train back to London arriving early evening, depending on the train this should cost around £65. Accommodation costs will be around £200. In addition please ensure that you have travel insurance that will cover you for accidents and any serious existing medical conditions. Unless you can provide evidence of cover we cannot take you on this ride. Normal holiday insurance may not cover you so you will need to go to a medical cover provider such as Staysure. This company does cover existing conditions including heart and stroke but it will cost you £2-300 for a single trip.

Frequently asked questions

Meetup is a platform for finding and joining local groups and events to connect with people who share similar interests. It offers a way to engage in activities or hobbies, meet new people, and become part of local communities.

On Meetup, you can look for bikepacking events in London by searching for relevant groups and activities in the city's outdoor and cycling categories. You can also filter by location to find those nearest to you.

Absolutely! Many bikepacking groups on Meetup welcome beginners and provide support as well as guidance for those new to the activity. It's a great way to learn and build confidence.

It's generally expected that participants bring their own bike to bikepacking meetups. If you're new, connect with the event organizer to see if bike rentals or sharing options are available.

To RSVP for a Meetup event, register on Meetup.com, find the event page, and confirm attendance. This lets organizers plan accordingly and provides important updates about the event.

Many Meetup events are free, but some may have a fee to cover costs like equipment or venue. Each event page lists any costs, so check details before you RSVP.

If no bikepacking events are scheduled, consider starting your own group or contacting existing cycling groups to recommend event ideas. Events depend on community interest and organizer availability.

Some groups organize overnight bikepacking meetups, offering a chance to explore further afield and camp. Check event descriptions or group pages for such adventures.

Meetup focuses on group activities but offers a platform to discover diverse community events from social gatherings to professional networking. However, it's not designed for 1-on-1 connections.

Most Meetup groups are open to new members and aim to grow their communities. However, it's always good to review the group details and guidelines before joining to ensure it’s a good fit.

Event frequency may vary based on organizer capacity and participant interest. Some groups may have monthly trips, while others occur less often. Check Meetup regularly for updates.

While some enjoy solo bikepacking, Meetup encourages group activities for shared experience and added safety. Joining an event provides company and support while exploring new trails.

Yes, some events may start as online meetings before proceeding to in-person meetups. Organizers decide the format based on current situation and member preferences.

While Meetup connects individuals with shared interests, skill levels can vary within a group. Be open to learning from others and sharing your experiences.

Group quality can vary. Some are well-established with experienced organizers, while others are new. Reading reviews and event descriptions helps gauge the group's organization level.
