Golden Gate Park, Eastside Hike to POIs & SF Botanic Garden
Sun, May 24, 5:00 PM**\*Don't be a no-show. *See the Group's no-show policy below.*** Don't be a no-show and lose your membership in the Group. Attendance is always taken and no-shows recorded. **[Here's a link to the video of the tour we did here on May 21st, 2022.](https://youtu.be/bJWphCOOW1g)** Golden Gate Park celebrated its 150th year anniversary in 2020. That's a lot of urban history. We'll get into just a little bit of that fascinating history today. But we want to get a good walk in. Distance today will be around 3.5 miles. Little up hills or elev. gain. Bring water only. Food trucks are available. My all time favorite is Sam's Chowder House truck, behind the huge, music Band Shell. Just the best clam chowder around. If you tip a dollar I'm sure you get extra clam, let's try it!. Also Annie's food carts, always around here and there. Below are the highlights to choose from in the eastern section. Unique about this walk is the members will choose as we go from the suggested sampling below. Come and see how this, **"we do it ourselves"**, style tour works. (I love it!) ***Golden Gate Park, (A sampling of POIs)*** Conservatory of Flowers (1878) US President James Garfield Statue (1884) Victorian era Baseball Player Statue, by Douglas Tilden (1891) Lily Pond & Australian Tree Fern Dell (1902) Tennis Courts (1894-2021) Lawn Bowling Courts (1901) Sharon Meadow (1894) Coffee House in the Park (recent) Lake Alford (1882) Alford Bridge & Tunnel (1889) Children's Quarter (1888) Sharon Building (1888) GG Park Carousal (1888-first Carousal) A Monastery Stone & the amazing story of these 8000 tons of stones that landed in the Park from Spain in 1931? Japanese Tea Garden (1894) Stowe Lake (1881) San Francisco Botanical Garden (1940) (Then returning to where we started to the Conservatory of Flowers, we'll pass by the following.) **Itinerary-San Francisco Botanical Garden Tour, If we go there on this tour?** Garden of Fragrance Rhododendron Garden Heidelberg Hill & Magnolias Mediterranean Garden Ancient & Primitive Plant Garden South Africa/(Cape Town) Garden New Zealand & Australia Andean Cloud Forest Zellerbach Garden of Perennials Japanese Moon Viewing Garden Camellia Garden Redwood Grove California Natives Lots of interesting things in the Park. In-season: "Magnificent Magnolias", peak bloom time around Feb.1st. But we'll find lots of other beautiful plants and flowers to amaze. (\*Don't be a no-show.) It's good to give out name tags which I do. I fill out the name tags just before I leave for the tour. This also gives me a way to take attendance. Because name tags that are not picked up, are recorded as no-shows. If you get too many no-shows recorded in your personal Meet-up profile you'll be cancelled from this Meetup. In the photos is a picture of No-show name tags in February 26. (To cancel your RSVP beforehand [please at least 24 hrs. in advance]. Look for the, **"Edit Attendance"** tab at the bottom right hand corner of the screen for lap tops and left, bottom for phones.)

Urban Hikers' Scavenger Hunt
Sat, Jun 20, 11:00 PMIt's time for the second annual Urban Hiker's Scavenger Hunt. **Please read below carefully.** Meeting place: Francisco Park at the picnic tables if available or the concrete benches near the restroom if the tables are not available. Meet 4 pm, Start Scavenger Hunt 4:30 pm Neighborhoods: Russian Hill, Fisherman's Wharf, Marina, and possibly Telegraph Hill or Cow Hollow. Teams of 4 people, and 12 Clues/Locations A paper list of Clues/Locations to be distributed to each team at 4:30 Regular walkers with our group are encouraged and prioritized to participate and will have an advantage in figuring out some of the clues. **We would like the game participants to be walkers who regularly have done walks with us. If not enough people in that category sign up, we will open it to others. So sign up by putting your name on the wait list and we will move the regular walkers to the join list. Anyone from the wait list can come and hang out with us or be a stand by if someone a team late cancels. The scavenger hunt team players will be on the actual attendee list.** Must be back at start point at 6:15 for judging and prizes. Each team must go to the site directed by the clue in each section and take a selfie of all 4 team members visible, and the location clearly visible. All selfies must show team member faces unless otherwise noted on the clue. The judges will determine if you have found the correct, intended location and selfie acceptability. Prizes, some admittedly silly, for the first team to return with acceptable selfies for all 12 clues, or whoever gets the most, if no team gets all 12. No cheating with vehicle transport (no Uber, taxi, MUNI etc). Also, we'll have prizes for the best team story, told MUNI diary style. We will have a picnic style after gathering at the start point while we judge and give out prizes. If it's good weather we will just have the picnic. If bad weather, we will have a quick picnic and have an indoor gathering to follow. Participants can bring picnic items to leave with the judges while they are on the hunt or give money to judges to buy items for the picnic. Judges will go to TJ's while the hunt is going on to buy provisions. Please note: Phone help is not available for latecomers. If you are late it is very hard to catch up with us. We walk at a medium pace. Escorts or sweeps are not provided, so slower walkers should be completely prepared to finish the hike on their own if they become separated from the group, and they may want to consider bringing a friend to walk with them. I reserve the right to make small changes to the route as needed. Liability Disclaimer: The organizers of this meet-up are unpaid volunteers and not expert hiking guides. All participants agree to assume 100% responsibility for their own safety, conduct, and well-being and recognize that possible hazards exist while participating in outdoor (or any other) activities, and agree to participate solely at their own risk. If you RSVP āYesā and/or attend any of our events, it shall be conclusively presumed that you understand and agree to this policy.
