## The No Small Talk Hike **For founders and people who are interested in business & physiology / philosophy** Going for a hike causal conversations sharing life experiences * What are you building, and what would you lose if it worked? * When did you last change your mind about something that mattered? * What do you believe that most of your peers would disagree with? * Is ambition a virtue, or a very respectable form of avoidance? * What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail, and what if you knew you couldn't be seen? **Who it's for** Founders, operators, and builders who want conversation with some weight, and anyone who reads philosophy, argues about it, or just likes thinking out loud. You don't need a company or a reading list. **The details** * **When:** Sunday 11th October at 10am * **Where:** Cold Spring, New York * **Distance:** 2 hour hike * **Bring:** Water, comfortable shoes * **Cost:** Free

The Past, Present, and Future of Performance Engineering

The Past, Present, and Future of Performance Engineering

Thu, Oct 22, 11:00 PM
From New York UX Speed and Web Performance Group
4.8

Performance engineering has never been static. From the early days of mainframes and transaction processing to distributed systems, cloud computing, agile development, and DevOps, performance professionals have repeatedly had to adapt to changes in how software is built and operated. Artificial Intelligence is now accelerating that transformation once again. This talk looks at the evolution of performance engineering through three lenses: what changed in the past, what is changing today, and what those changes may tell us about the future. We will examine how cloud, DevOps, and AI are reshaping performance practices, where traditional approaches are becoming less effective, and how the boundaries between development, operations, observability, and performance engineering are increasingly blurred. Finally, we will explore what this means for performance engineers themselves. Which responsibilities may disappear or be automated? Which new ones will emerge? And what skills will performance professionals need as performance engineering continues to evolve? The future is not set in stone, but the patterns of the past may offer useful clues about where the discipline is heading. [Alex Podelko](https://alexanderpodelko.com/Bio.html) is a **Senior Performance Engineer** at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he focuses on performance testing and optimization of Amazon Aurora. He has worked in performance engineering since 1997, holding performance-focused roles at MongoDB, Oracle/Hyperion, Aetna, and Intel before joining AWS. Alex writes and speaks regularly on performance engineering, with a particular interest in how the discipline is evolving and how performance professionals can work more effectively across development, operations, architecture, and other traditionally separate disciplines. He currently serves on the SPEC Research Group Steering Committee. We will have **food and drinks** and as always, we are going to have **geekaways** with **geeky prizes** provided by our sponsors. **Agenda:** 6:00PM - Arrive at the venue, meet other members 6:15PM - Event starts 6:30PM - **The Past, Present, and Future of Performance Engineering** (Alexander Podelko) 7:15PM - Q&A 7:45PM - "Books and Stuff" geekaways 8:00PM - Open Discussion, Networking Make sure to **fill out your legal name** and **bring your ID** to show at security desk.
