Making Belonging: Story, Design & Social Practice

Making Belonging: Story, Design & Social Practice

Mon, Oct 19, 11:00 PM
From Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab
4.7

What does it mean to make a place where people feel they belong? And what changes when we make it together? Join us for an evening of experimentation as students from Columbia University share a series of prototypes exploring belonging. Through story, design, play, and participation, we'll look at social practice as an act of co-creation, making things with people rather than simply for them. The evening will move between prototypes, conversation, and collective experimentation, asking how the spaces we create—physical, digital, or somewhere in between can invite connection, agency, and a sense of belonging. We'll be joined by **Romy Nehme**, an experience and strategy designer, writer, and member of the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab whose work sits at the intersection of storytelling, imagination, design, and systems change. Romy helped launch New_ Public, bringing a placemaking ethos to the design of digital spaces, and through her practice Beautiful Seams explores how narrative and experience design can help people imagine and shape different futures. Beautiful Seams. Come ready to experience, experiment, and make something together.

Bronx C@L Meetup #01

Bronx C@L Meetup #01

Fri, Oct 9, 10:00 PM
From Bronx CRAFT@large Meetup Group

Tired of crossing two boroughs just to find a workshop, a class, or a community of people who like making things with their hands? So are we. BX Craft at Large — a Bronx-based extension of the Craft at Large network — is bringing that community home, so Bronx makers finally have a place of their own. Join us for the very first BX Craft at Large meetup — a chance to meet fellow Bronx-based makers, talk about what we want this community to become, and start building something together. No experience required, just curiosity and an interest in making things with your hands. For our first meeting we will introduce the co-organizers and hosts, get to know each other and our crafts, and then engage in a group activity.

Wed, Oct 21, 11:00 PM
From Hack Manhattan
4.7

Come bring your broken items in need of some TLC to Hack Manhattan for this month's session of the Fixers' Collective. All are welcome, whether you have something to fix or just want to observe and watch. We encourage people to bring in their items early, so we can devote the most time to the item. Subsequently, if you arrive in the middle of a fix, we’ll try to accommodate you as best as we can. Pay what you wish for our handiwork!! *Fixers Collective is a social experiment in improvisational fixing and aggressive asset recovery. Their goal is to increase material literacy in our community by fostering an ethic of creative caring toward the objects in our lives.* http://www.fixerscollective.org/about/
