Community

Sun, Oct 11, 3:00 AM
From Socrates Cafe Melbourne
4.7

Please join us this Sunday to discuss the philosophy of community, hosted by Nick. Often I have heard people talk about things such as "community development"and "community members", and I feel "community" is often taken for granted. So I look forward to unpacking the concept with you this Sunday! We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo in the spirit of learning and friendly debate. We welcome your reflections on the topic, in addition feel free to question assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions questioned This event is also posted to the Philosophy Circle group Possible areas of discussion: - What is a 'Community'? Is it just a group of people, or something me specific? Is it even a useful concept? - What level of commonality is needed for there to be a 'community'? (eg can we be in a community with non-humans?) - Which communities have you belonged to? Who defined your membership of that community -yourself, or others? Did you have a choice to be in the community or not? - Have you felt like you were part of a 'community'? What gave you that feeling? - Reflecting on your experience in communities, what are the qualities of a good community? - Do we have (extra) responsibilities for community members (eg over those who aren't)? Do others have extra responsibilities for us if we're a community member? If so what responsibilities are these? - Can non-humans form communities? And it's open to any other questions or curiosities about this topic people might have on the day! Hope to see you there!

From Beyond the Page - Women's 30+ Melbourne Bookclub

Welcome to our October gathering of Melbourne Women's Big Ideas Book Club! If you love discovering great books and discussing the ideas they spark, we'd love to have you join us. This is a relaxed monthly lunch where every member brings along a book they've recently enjoyed. There are no set reads and no genre restrictions—just thoughtful books and interesting women. Each member has the opportunity to share what they've been reading, what resonated, what challenged them, or what fell short. From there, the conversation naturally evolves as we explore new perspectives, exchange recommendations, and connect through a shared love of reading. Whether you're a regular attendee or joining us for the first time, you'll find a welcoming group of curious, intelligent women who enjoy meaningful conversation and genuine connection. I can't wait to hear what you've been reading this month.

Melbourne Elevated Heights Aerial Silks Exchange

Sun, Oct 18, 10:30 PM
From Elevated Connections Aerial Silks Skillshare Community

We are hosting our next Melbourne Elevated Heights Aerial Silks Exchange for anyone in the community looking to get some extra time on the silks. This is a low-pressure space meant for sharing sequences, working on specific transitions, or simply getting in a solid training session alongside others who share the same interest. We keep things informal and collaborative, so whether you are working on a new drop or just want to refine your technique, you will find a supportive group to train with. This meetup is open to all levels, though a basic level of experience is recommended as this is a skillshare environment rather than a structured class. We will have the mats and rigs ready, so please bring your own gear and come prepared to share a bit of knowledge or pick up a few tips from the rest of the group. If you are planning on joining us, please let us know by hitting the RSVP button so we have a good idea of how many people to expect.
