Philosophy Circle: Exploring Social Class
Sun, Aug 2, 4:00 AMPlease join us this Sunday to discuss 'Social Class'. Ananya will be hosting this session. Some influences to our discussion are: * Pierre Bordieu’s theory of capital * Karl Marx’s theory of class * Max Weber’s theory of domination * BR Ambedkar’s view on social justice in a democracy We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp. **Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee** (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs. There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group. Our discussion will delve into studying social class and the following questions: * What is the class system? * The evolution of such a system. * Why do societies reproduce and perpetuate certain structural divisions in society? * What influences these structures and how are they delineated? * How does social class play out in society? What tensions exist within it? * What is social change? * How can we look at social change in the present context? Hope to see you there!
