Community Habitat Restoration event at Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

Join us for a habitat restoration event! It’s a great opportunity to learn about native plants and local wildlife, all while spending some time outdoors in beautiful Baldwin Hills Parklands. This event is in partnership with California State Parks Foundation. Spaces are limited, so if you are interested in participating, **please RSVP to the coordinator at least 24hours in advance of the event: amendiaperez@naturenexusinstitute.org** Important things to know about this event: * Volunteers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Habitat restoration tasks are best suited for people who are 12 years of age or older. * Please wear long pants and covered shoes. * Please bring plenty of drinking water for yourself as well as ample sun protection. * Work sites are frequently off trail and may be on uneven terrain. * We typically meet up at the top parking lot adjacent to the visitor center to start the event, but we work in several sites throughout the park. ***We tend to recognize war when it is kinetic—bombs, missiles, militaries. But the conflicts confronting America and the West are also being waged through ideological subversion, foreign influence, institutional capture, demographic pressure, information warfare, economic power, education and political warfare.*** ***Just because it doesn't look like war doesn't mean we're not in one.*** ***World War III: Status Update brings together leading experts to examine these different fronts: where we stand, how they intersect, and what America must do to prevail.*** The urgency of the midterm elections and the rapidly changing national-security landscape have prompted us to convene another all-day conference examining the status of World War III. In 2023 and 2024, AFA held six conferences under the banner World War III: The Early Years. Now we return to assess what has changed—and where the threats are growing. We will examine the major challenges confronting us both at home and abroad, including the Middle East and Islam; China and its influence within the United States; the Red-Green Axis and the ways in which these ideological movements work together; changing demographics; and the influence of foreign nations throughout American institutions. The conference will be held on October 18 in Los Angeles, from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM. Details are still being finalized, but confirmed speakers already include: Gordon Chang, Capt. **INFORMATIONAL POSTING ONLY-See Website at** **[www.wildernesstravelcourse.org](http://www.wildernesstravelcourse.org/)** Dear Group Members, particularly the recent swell of new, never-been-backpacking-before-but-want-to-start members: There is a great Sierra Club opportunity that is about to begin….an opportunity that only happens one time each year and it is one of the best outdoor learning experiences the Sierra Club has to offer. This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competent hiking off-trail, snow travel, rock scrambling techniques, first aid, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips, most of which take place in the High Sierra, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months. WTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. You will acquire skills in trip planning, preparation, equipment and wilderness safety to take you into the backcountry in all seasons, beyond roads and trails with new friends that share your interest in the outdoors. Valley Of Fire is stunning! Red Rock is equally so. **And we get to camp and then explore both.** ***Easy Camping!! If you have not heard of either Valley Of Fire or Red Rock Conservation Area. . . that's because they are outside of California. We have so much here that we often can overlook what is right next-door and still super close. The other reason you may not of heard of them . . . Valley of Fire is a Nevada State Park and not a National Park. State Parks are assumed to not be as good as National Parks. And that's not true!!! Red Rock is a National Conservation Area . . . again . . . assumed to not be as good since not designated as National Park . . . yet. The reality is BOTH are stunning. And the designations make them more accessible. * Valley Of Fire has "The Fire Wave." Similar "The Wave" in UT. It also has * Pastel Slot Canyon * The Dome-lands (another slot there too) * Rainbow Vista Trail * Fire Canyon Overlook * Petroglyph Canyon (yes!!! Petroglyphs!!) * Atlatl Rock * Arch Rock * Pinnacles Trail (for the adventurous). And we are likely to see some or all of these: * Bighorn sheep * Jackrabbits * Coyotes * Kit Foxes * Lizards * Iguanas * Tortoises ***About this event:*** This event is tent camping (not RV or Van). You do need to provide your own gear and food. (more on that down below). We are staying outside of Red Rock on a private non-federal, non-blm site. The general itinerary/ schedule is: Fri- Arrive when you can. Anytime AFTER 2PM. People will be arriving up to midnight. I will be away to greet you and show you where to go. Along with whoever else is at the campfire at that time. Sat- Valley Of Fire - - This is the main fun. * Drive Mouse’s Tank Road towards Fire Wave and take lots of photos along the way. * Now to our main hike. We will get there early before the crowds. We will do a loop of four hikes together. Fire Wave, Pink Pastel Slot Cyn, Domes Slot, White Domes. They call it the 7 wonders loop. I do not know what the other three wonders are. * After that we make it to Fire Cyn Vista (this is a view only) * Then two short hikes of Rainbow Vista trail (this has natural arches) * & Mouse's Tank trial. This has 2000 year old petroglyphs all along the canyon walls. * A quick zip to Atlatl Rock (more petroglyphs). * Pinnacles Trail is an option for those that want more dirt on their shoes. * And lastly visit the Beehives and take tons more pix there. * Elephant Rock is also an option to drive to. * Get back to camp and we have a fab campfire all nite. Sunday Schedule will be Red Rock Cyn. * Easy vista points and viewpoint stops. * Medium (two or three smaller hikes) * Hard hike (for the hardcore among us. * We will break to groups accordingly by who wants to do what. * Get back to camp and we have a fab campfire all nite. Monday: Head home. * For those only staying Sat & Sun eve. Simply pack up Sun AM and do Red Rock with us and then continue home. **Time of year:** BOTH Valley of Fire and Red Rock Nat Rec Area are MISERABLE in summer. For this time of year . . . Daytime high will get up to 70 degrees. Perfect for hikes. Nighttime low will get to around 45 degrees. Just bring some extra blankets and you will fine. The class topics include uses of wild plants for food and medicine, purifying and finding water, making fire with primitive and modern methods, natural navigation, finding fibre from natural sources and making cordage, emergency shelters, tools and weapons, and more. We will practice a few of the primitive methods of fire-starting methods, and you will learn some of the secrets that come from years of experience. You will get to practice the bow drill, the hand drill, flint and steel, and more. We will also go for a short walk (if time) so you can see the types of woods that are best for making fire, and the tinders that are best for getting your fire to light. And enjoyable gathering. PRIMITIVE & MODERN TECHNOLOGY: FIRE WORKSHOP WE’LL BE COOKING TOO! October 31, 10 a.m. We will take a walk and you will see the woods that are used to make the most basic methods of fire-production: The bow and drill, and the hand drill. You will also see flint and steel. You will learn by doing. You will work to make an ember, and you will learn which woods are best, and how to process your woods. A short walk included to see which plants are best for your fire-making kit. This is a timeless bushcraft skill. We expect that each person will be able to collect and process most of your kit during this class. You will learn this fundamental bushcraft skill by doing! An excellent overall survival skill, since fire is at the very heart of survival: signalling, purifying water, cooking, etc. BONUS: Once we make a fire, we’ll cook some wild foods at the grill for each of you to try. MID-DAY NATURAL NAVIGATION CLASS

October 29 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm $30.00 – $45.00 October 29, noon Getting around accurately is a valuable survival skill! Sometimes you have a compass and map, and sometimes you don’t. In this two-hour class, you’ll learn how to construct a sun compass, and how you can use that to tell direction and time. This sun compass is nearly as accurate as your magnetized compass, and the “clock” is more accurately telling you local solar time — good enough for general purposes. You’ll also learn some natural methods of telling direction, which are ages-old observations. You’ll learn which are worth remembering, and which are “old husband’s tales.” We’ll also address how to identify constellations for telling directions, and how to navigate with only a compass. So bring your compass. What we cover in our short time will depend upon how much time everyone needs to grasp the concepts. Location 2, Hahamongna Watershed Park.
