Urban Swim Support - Liberty Island Circumnavigation - 10 mile trip
Sun, Aug 16, 9:15 AM**Advanced/Elite Level Paddlers - 12 mile trip** We will assist with Urban Swim open water swim providing 1-1 coverage to swimmers going around the Statue of Liberty When you RSVP you will be placed on a waitlist until the host reviews that you pass the prerequisites. Please do not RSVP if you do not. **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:** * Volunteered in 2025 - 2026 * Completed 2 trainings with our boathouse in 2025 - 2026 * You can self rescue with whatever craft you are using * You received an invitation from Urban Swim or host to participate **Craft:** * Sea Kayak - or SUP if approved by Urban Swim. **Come prepared:** * Sunscreen * Hat * Water in a reusable bottle. Lots of water * FOOD! You'll be hungry when we land and we only have about 30 min rest at the landing spot. * Anything else need to spend hours on the water **Timeline:** * 5:15 - 5:25 AM - Arrive at the boathouse * YOU ONLY HAVE 15 MIN TO GET EVERYTHING READY * 5:45 AM - Safety briefing * 5:55 AM - Move boats to beach * 6:05 AM - On the water * 6:15 AM - Depart HCCB * 7:30 AM - South of Ellis Island * 7:35 AM - check in with Urban Swim * 7:45 AM - swimmers in the water **7:56 AM SWIM START** * 9:00ish AM - Swim will finish * 9:15 AM - Paddle to Morris Canal * 9:45 AM - Land at Morris Canal **30 - 45 min break** * 10:15 AM begin paddle back to HCCB * 11:45 AM: Arrive at HCCB * 1215 PM: Clean and put away equipment * 1:00 PM Trip ends \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- NOAA predicted current at the Battery: 5:57 AM - Max ebb \~2.29 Knots 9:33 AM - Slack 12:08 PM - Max flood \~1.24 Knots

Kayak technique for intermediate volunteers
Thu, Aug 20, 10:15 PMLearn or hone sea kayak skills. We may practice in the cove and/or take a short trip on the river. Be ready to swim! Possible activities (dependent on conditions/attendees): * Fine-tune forward/reverse paddle * High/low bracing * Turning (bracing turns, edging, sweep, bow/stern rudder) * Draw strokes * Assisted or self rescues * Open to requests! **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP** 1. *AT LEAST* 3 shifts in 2026 & 2. *At least* 2 trainings in 2026 & 3. *At least* 1 novice trip in which you stayed *toward* the front & 4. Demonstrate comfort with: **✔** Launching/landing independently **✔** Being rescued **✔** Sweep stroke **✔** Stern rudder **✔** Reverse paddling **COME PREPARED** * Appropriate quick drying clothing. You will get wet. Your feet and legs will be submerged * Change of clothes * Enthusiasm, patience, and questions * Water in a reusable bottle **TIMELINE** * 6:15 PM - Meet at HCCB. Prepare equipment. Safety briefing * 6:30 PM - Move boats to beach * 6:45 PM - Practice in the cove or take a little trip * 8:30 PM - Return to boathouse * 8:45 PM - Clean and put away equipment * 9:15 PM - Training ends HCCB is completely volunteer run. Our guides generously take time out of their busy schedules to run trips and trainings. If you RSVP yes, please consider this a **commitment to attend**. If you cancel at the last minute or no-show, you take a spot away from someone else or prevent a trip/training from happening. We understand that life happens, so if you must cancel close to the start of a trip or training, please change your RSVP to “Not Going” and message the host(s) or comment in the chat.
