6.5 Mile Herald Square to Battery Park Hike
Sat, Sep 5, 7:15 PMWe'll be going from Herald Square down to Battery Park, and then for dinner at a restaurant on Stone Street that does separate checks for large groups. We'll be going through as many parks and points of interest as can be arranged. We'll be starting just north of the Broadway entrance to Macy's. There are restrooms available at Macy's in the basement -- the women's room is in the northeast corner, and the men's room is in the middle of the southern edge of the basement. Make sure you use the bathroom, our next opportunity won't be until Washington Square Park. Attendance on this hike is free, and all participants attend at their own risk. Harriman State Park & Lake Sebago! 🏞️🌊
Mon, Sep 7, 12:30 PMOn Monday, September 7th, we’re off to explore Harriman State Park and Lake Sebago! 🏞️🌊 Event is free. You’re welcome to join and leave whenever! 😃 The hike will be moderately difficult All levels are welcome! No experience needed! The hike itself is 3.5 to 4 hours. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothes Feel free to bring sandwiches, drinks, snacks, hats, sun screen, and more! Will have time to enjoy these on the way and when we get to the lake. Then we’ll take the 9:30am train at Secaucus Lower Level to Tuxedo Station. We’ll arrive at 10:29am. We’ll take a brief break for snacks and to use the restroom. Plan is to hit the road by 10:45am. We’ll come back by taking the 4:20pm train from Tuxedo Station. It’ll arrive at Secaucus at 5:23pm. We’ll get back to New York Penn Station by 5:36pm. The one way fare is $14.80 (so overall it’ll be about $30) Full details on locations and times below: Harriman State Park! 🏞️ Monday, September 7th We’ll take the New Jersey transit train NJCL 7629 (sky blue line) towards Rahway at 9:07am Arrive at Secaucus Upper Level at 9:16am Walk to Secaucus Lower Level Take Train MNBNP 71 (mustard yellow line) toward Port Jervis at 9:30am Arrive at Tuxedo Station at 10:29am (You’re welcome to drive there too!) From the Tuxedo platform, we’ll walk north and turn right onto East Village Road We’ll continue on East Village Road and walk under the I-87 overpass We’ll turn left onto Grove Drive The trailhead will be 100 yards on our right There are three trails. Triangle Trail (yellow) heads north Ramapo – Dunderberg (aka R-D trail, path is red dot on white) trail goes northeast Kakiat Trail (white) heads south We’ll take the Ramapo – Dunderberg trail until it meets the Tuxedo – Mount Ivy Trail (aka the TMI trail) in about 0.8 miles. It’s also a red path but the blaze is slightly different (it’s a red dash on white). We’ll continue walking until we reach Lake Sebago, where we’ll hang out and have lunch. Then we’ll make our way back. Of course, please reach out if you have any questions! My intent for this event is that it be a fun, ambitious and interesting, fast paced hiking tour of about 7 miles where we will cover what existed BEFORE Central Park was even built, the history of the Park, and it's design features. We will also see the new Davis Center area where the Lasker skating rink used to be as well the significant changes to the landscape up north which now conforms more closely to the original design of the Park. I will stop a number of times to very briefly talk about what we are seeing. That means I talk and you listen or make believe you are listening! Over the years this group has conducted numerous tours of Central Park and I have led several tours of Northern and Southern Central Park for the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). This event will be even better. Much better! We are going to keep things moving as much as possible. On this hiking tour we hope to visit areas such as the Ramble where there will be one short climb, Conservatory Gardens, the Ravine, the Great Hill, the Blockouse and the North Woods where there are waterfalls. Central Park is often considered a work of art and hopefully we can show you why! (Photo by the late and great photographer Sonia Braga) We will probably start in lower/mid Central Park and head north to the tip of the Park. Of course, you can leave any time. We will be zig-zagging quite a bit. Public transportation will be easy to find before and after the event. Registration will be limited to around 20 members or so. We will meet BEFORE 10:15 A.M. and finish around 3:30 P.M. or so NOT far from public transportation at West 96th Street. If you drive, parking is free on Sundays. We plan to start on the east side and finish on the west side-but you can leave any time. THERE WILL BE A BRIEF LUNCH STOP AT SOME POINT. BRING LUNCH/SNACKS AND WATER. WE WON'T STOP ANYWHERE TO BUY FOOD. THIS GROUP NEVER GOES FOOD SHOPPING DURING AN EVENT! IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL PLANNED BATHROOM STOPS DURING THE EVENT. FINDING GOOD BATHROOMS IS ONE OF THE STRENGTHS OF THIS GROUP. AS ALWAYS, I am also going to ask that people NOT post any comments or questions prior to the event. You have more than enough information to do this once you get the meeting details. No offense, but I don’t need to know-and neither does anyone else what you are doing that day if you can’t make it or what you think the weather will be, etc. etc. You may even think you have some deep insights into something or other but I ask you to keep that deepness to yourself.
