SydDT #128: When Does Design Become Strategic?
Wed, Jul 22, 8:00 AMMost designers want to be more strategic. But what does that actually mean? Is strategic design about working on bigger problems? Influencing executives? Creating visions and roadmaps? Driving transformation? Or are we confusing good design with strategic design? Join us for our July meetup where a panel of experienced strategic design leaders will explore one of the most debated questions in our profession: what makes design strategic? We’re lucky to have Dr Leanne Sobel, Jaimes Nel, Paul Merrell, and Lize Wordsworth sharing their insights with short lightning talks before we open up a panel discussion and audience conversation. We'll explore: * What strategic design is * What it isn’t – with common misconceptions and traps * How strategic design differs from other design disciplines * Where strategic design is heading * How designers can increase their strategic influence and impact Expect diverse perspectives, thoughtful discussions, and practical insights for designers at every stage of their career. Come join us for some fun conversations with interesting people in and around the design thinking community. New members are welcome! **SPEAKERS** **[Dr Leanne Sobel](https://www.linkedin.com/in/lsobel/)** **Adjunct Fellow, UTS Business School** Leanne is a strategic designer, researcher, and educator. Claude Code from Zero to Hero 201: Turn Messy Work Into Smart Workflows
Tue, Jul 21, 8:00 AMThe professionals who get the most out of AI aren't using it as a smarter search engine, they've taught it their workflow. In this hands-on 201 workshop, you'll build reusable Claude "skills", connect the tools you already use, and automate the recurring tasks that eat your calendar. Less busywork. Better output. More time for the work that matters. **What You'll Do** * Turn a messy spreadsheet into a polished, presentable report in minutes, that frustrating kind that usually eats your afternoon. * Build a reusable skill: your personalised workflow that Claude executes on demand without re-prompting. * Connect the tools you already use, calendar, social, messaging, so it helps where your work actually happens. * Set up a recurring digest or weekly summary that arrives without you lifting a finger. **You'll Walk Out With** * A polished work output created during the session. * A reusable workflow you can apply again. * A stronger understanding of how AI can reduce repetitive work. * More confidence turning information into useful business outputs. * A practical next step toward automation. **Who This Is For** * Working professionals who deal with reports, admin, documents or research. * Consultants and freelancers who want to produce better outputs faster. * Founders and operators who want to streamline repeat work. * People who have tried AI and want to use it more systematically. * Anyone with basic AI experience who wants to move from prompting to a Claude Code based workflow design. * 101 is helpful, but not required. You can drop into 201 directly if you already have basic confidence using AI tools. **Event Details** **📅 Tuesday 21 July 2026** **🕕 6:00–8:30 PM** **📍 Western Sydney Startup Hub, 5 Fleet Street, North Parramatta** **🎯 Level 201 · Intermediate · Basic AI familiarity helpful** **Tickets** **$29 per session ($19 for Early-Bird).** No prerequisite, each session stands alone. Attending all three gives you the full arc from setup to full autonomous workflows. **Included:** * Laptop access during the workshop & Claude and AI access ready to use (Worth $20). * Guided hands-on exercises. * Practical examples for real work. * Support and love from the WSTI team. * Bring your own laptop and Claude Pro licence if you prefer, but you do not need to. Less admin chaos. More workflow magic. More time for the work that lights you up. Grab your ticket and walk out with a reusable AI workflow you can put to work the very next day ✨
