Reading the Tea Leaves: Developing Product Sense

Reading the Tea Leaves: Developing Product Sense

Wed, Jul 22, 8:00 AM
From Product Anonymous Meetup - Melbourne
4.7

A lot of the time, product management can feel like the art of predicting the future. With incomplete data, lots of competing priorities, and stakeholders that always want to have a say, it can be challenging to make a call on what to do next. Building your product sense is a way to make sense of the madness. We'll explore what product sense is, how you actually apply it at work, and ways to develop yours. We'll run through some real examples of using product sense to make hard decisions, pass hiring tasks, and ultimately ship better products faster. **Our Speaker** Maxy Lotherington is the Head of Product & Design at InvestorHub, where she leads a team of product managers and designers. She's spent 10+ years designing impactful digital experiences, scaling product teams, and learning lots every day. From Community Conversations

Community Conversations: Imagining Stronger Social Cohesion in Boroondara During the July session of Community Conversations, we will partner with the 'Bahá'i Creating an Inclusive Narrative' project to contribute to its ongoing learning about advancing social cohesion in Australia. Since its inception in 2019, the project has brought together hundreds of people through roundtable discussions exploring the "bigger story" of Australian identity - one that embraces the diverse voices, cultures and historical experiences of all Australians. We warmly invite you to join our Community Conversations gathering on 17 July 2026 and participate in a Boroondara focused roundtable discussion that will help shape a shared vision for fostering greater social cohesion within our community. The consultation process will be guided by principles of reciprocity, respect and purposeful consultation. With the current challenges facing our community there has never been a more important time to contribute to this conversation. Insights and perspectives shared during the roundtable will help inform the second edition of the Creating an Inclusive Narrative publication, which will be shared with government and civil society organisations. For more information about the Bahá'i Creating an Inclusive Narrative project: **Creating an Inclusive Narrative Project** (https://collections.humanitix.com/creating-an-inclusive-narrative-project#CollectionAbout-title) Register now to reserve your place. Community Conversations is a monthly initiative of the Boroondara Bahá'í community that brings people together to explore contemporary challenges, strengthen understanding, and foster meaningful connection. This is a free event and all are invited to attend. Please RSVP to attend: http://bit.ly/4vcpuwh

Let’s catch up over coffee and food and play with the Art of Conversation cards! For those new to the Art of Conversation cards, they serve as an invitation to more in depth and meaningful conversation. Often going deeper than small talk, but how deep you want to go is up to you. An example of some questions you’ll find on the cards includes: ⭐️ Who is a person from your past that taught you something you still use today? ⭐️ What is a belief you held five years ago that you disagree with now? ⭐️ You can go to the past or the future, which one would you choose and why? I like to keep the group small (about six people) to allow for genuine connection to emerge. See you there!

The AI Revolution: Where Data Science Goes Next

The AI Revolution: Where Data Science Goes Next

Wed, Jul 22, 7:30 AM
From Data Science Melbourne
4.5

Welcome back to Data Science Melbourne after a few months away. We couldn't think of a better way to kick off the second half of the year than by exploring the biggest force reshaping our industry today: AI. This evening, we'll hear from three experienced practitioners who will examine the AI revolution from complementary perspectives: from how AI is transforming the role of data science professionals, to practical techniques for building effective AI-assisted workflows, to placing today's revolution in the broader context of decades of innovation in data science and artificial intelligence. Whether you're looking to make better use of AI in your day-to-day work, understand how your career is evolving, or reflect on where this technology is ultimately taking us, tonight promises to offer plenty of insights and thought-provoking discussion. **Talk 1** [Aaron McAleese](https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaronmcaleese/) is a data analytics consultant who has worked on a wide range of projects across Australia, NZ and Europe. Recent work has been with Block, Bupa, Rip Curl and the Salvation Army. He prides himself on a very pragmatic approach focused on bridging gaps between data and good strategic decisions. He has seen many changes over the years, but never such transformation as that driven by AI in reshaping analytics and data science more broadly. This makes it a very exciting time to be involved. Aaron will explore the unique aspects of AI and how he has seen a massive advancement in data analytics, particularly in opening up access for decision makers to great insights. Although this has seen the role of the traditional analyst diminish, it opens up exciting opportunities for those willing to adapt and broaden their skill base. Aaron will dig into the why he sees the future analytics professional as a critical hub in any organsiation and gives tips of how analysts can shape themsevles into these future roles. **Talk 2** [Brodie Norfolk](https://www.linkedin.com/in/bnorfolk-phd/) is a Senior Data Scientist with a PhD in Astrophysics and a background spanning applied maths, statistics, machine learning, optimisation, and production data systems. At Xero, he works on GenAI across Customer Feedback and SRE, building systems for feedback routing, LLM evaluation, observability insights, and conversational access to business metrics. Brodie will share practical patterns for getting real leverage from AI in data science: moving from ad hoc prompting to validated workflows that can be taught, reused, and shared. The talk covers how to accelerate your own work with AI-assisted planning, coding, review, and validation, then turn those patterns into reusable team assets, tools, and agentic workflows. **Talk 3** [Michael Brand](https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-brand-b230736/) has been a Data Scientist since 1992, and is director and founder of Data Science consultancy "Otzma Analytics" since 2018, before which he served as Chief Data Scientist at Telstra and in similar positions internationally at Pivotal, Verint Systems, INCERT GIE and PrimeSense (the company that developed the XBox Kinect). Academically, he is an Adjunct Professor of Computing Technologies at RMIT, before which he served as Associate Professor of Data Science and AI at Monash University and as Director of the Monash Centre for Data Science. In this short talk, Michael will leverage three plus decades of work in Data Science and AI to connect some dots and draw the picture of the longer history of the revolution we are now witnessing: what events were long in the making, which are age-old stories repeating, and what does it all tell us about the future? The answers are likely to surprise you: they include politics, stock markets, auto insurance and some physical inevitabilities. **Sponsor:** A big thank you to our new sponsor, *Tech & Data People*, for their support and for providing us with food and drinks for this event. Tech and Data People (TDP) are a leading provider of recruitment services specialising in Technology and Data Analytics. With a dedicated team of experienced recruiters and an industry-leading network of professionals, they excel in connecting top talent with leading organisations across Australia.
