**Wasserturm and Pumpstation Tour – Cycling Tour to Grunewald and Spandau** **Time:** 15:00 **Theme:** Cycle Tour + Water Infrastructure + Industrial Heritage + Nature **Start:** Water Tower Prenzlauer Berg (just opposite side of street from Umani restaurant) **Distance:** 25–30 km **Suggested contribution:** €5 Join me for a cycling journey from the centre of Berlin through **Charlottenburg, the Grunewald and along the Havel**, exploring the water infrastructure of Berlin. This is a tour about **water**: where Berlin got it, how it was pumped, stored and cleaned, and how the infrastructure built to supply a rapidly growing city is still visible today. We'll start at the best known Wasserturm in PBerg then tour past several others on our way to the the olderest surviving pumpstation in the city: the historic **Wasserwerk Teufelssee**, now home to the Ökowerk Nature Conservation Centre. We'll explore the remarkable surviving machinery and buildings of Berlin's oldest complete surviving waterworks, before taking a break at the nearby beer garden. From there we'll continue north through the Grunewald, taking in the Grunewald turm and then along the Havel, eventually reaching Spandau. **The Tour** Berlin's growth in the nineteenth century created a huge problem: **how do you supply a rapidly expanding city with clean water?** Our route follows the answer. Starting in central Berlin, we'll cycle west towards Charlottenburg, where the development of wealthy new neighbourhoods created an urgent demand for a reliable water supply. Along the way we'll see the **Wasserturm Berlin** and make our way towards Grunewald and the historic **Wasserwerk Teufelssee**. Built between 1871 and 1873, the waterworks originally supplied the new villa district of Westend. It was later expanded and became part of the municipal water system, eventually supplying large parts of southern Berlin. The machinery, filter halls, water tanks and other elements of the original complex have survived remarkably well. Today the site is the **Ökowerk Nature Conservation Centre**, creating a fascinating meeting point between industrial heritage and nature. We'll take some time here to explore the site and have a drink at the nearby beer garden before continuing our ride. From the Grunewald we'll head towards the Havel, following the landscape north towards Spandau. Along the way we'll see how Berlin's natural landscape has been shaped by infrastructure—waterworks, reservoirs, canals, roads and energy systems—while still remaining one of the city's great recreational spaces. We'll finish in **Spandau**, where you can either take the train home or, if you're feeling energetic, continue cycling back into central Berlin. I am an accredited tour guide in Berlin, specialising in telling stories about the city's industrial heritage. I ask for a contribution of **€5** to organise the tour and share my knowledge. **Disclaimer:** Please note that all participants attend as group members, not as customers, and are responsible for their own safety. Please read the group description in full for an explanation of the terms and liabilities. **The Cycling** This is a relaxed sightseeing ride rather than a sporting event. 🚲 We'll cover around **25–30 kilometres**, with frequent stops for stories, photographs, drinks and discussion. The route includes some unpaved paths through the Grunewald, so a reasonable bicycle suitable for light gravel or forest paths is recommended. Harz Day Trip: Devil's Wall and Witches Mountain

*Journey to the Harz Mountain region, hike along some of the most impressive rock formations, and walk through the magical woodlands, which, according to mythology, are the home of witches and the devil.* Hike Distance: 10km Difficulty: Intermediate Discover the magic of the Bodetal Valley and magical Hexentanzplatz Join a bunch of like-minded hikers and join this legendary trail that takes you straight into the heart of the Harz Mountains. Taking the direct Harz Express train from Berlin, the hike climbs the picturesque town of Thale up to the famous Hexentanzplatz (the "Witches' Dance Floor"). Perched on a dramatic rocky plateau about 454 meters above sea level, this route treats you to some of the most striking gorge scenery in northern Europe. As you leave the town behind, you'll walk alongside the rushing waters of the Bode River before beginning your ascent into the deep, rugged granite ravines of the Bodetal nature reserve. The terrain offers an immersive and moderately challenging trek, winding upward through dense, ancient forests of beech and oak. The paths are well-established but can become uneven and rocky, rewarding your physical effort with stunning lookout points along the way. From these clearings, you'll get breathtaking panoramic views of the sheer cliff faces, the green thickets blanketing the valley floor, and the imposing Rosstrappe cliff rising directly across the gorge. Beyond the natural beauty, this hike is steeped in German folklore and cultural history. The Hexentanzplatz itself is famously known as an old Saxon cult site and the legendary gathering place for witches on Walpurgis Night (the eve of May 1st), a tradition that heavily inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s masterpiece, Faust. Once you reach the top, the mystical atmosphere is brought to life by iconic metal sculptures of witches and devils, the historic Walpurgis Hall museum, and an open-air mountain theater, making the summit just as captivating as the journey up. After the hike, take the cable car down to the valley below, and enjoy a wonderful setting of the entire Harz. How to Start Your Art Collection: Exclusive Visit to Artist Studio

Today we look at the works of an artist who over the past two decades, has built an oeuvre consisting primarily of screen prints on paper and canvas. Prior to that, the artist had worked extensively in photography, filmmaking, and set design. The screenprinting work is informed by architecture - ancient and modern structures, calligraphy, graffiti, handwriting, and the movement of the masses through big metropolises. Other techniques on paper are included in the visit - from lithography to etching, cyanotype to woodblock printing - and more! Please note, the studio visit starts promptly at 12:00. This studio is located on the top floor and has no elevator: you will have to walk four flights of stairs. Beverages will be served, poetry may be read. The event is hosted on donation basis between €25-35. That’s the Zugspitze, and mid-June is the time to experience it. The snow has been nearly melted and the alpine meadows are bursting with wildflowers. Here’s the thing—this hike isn’t something just anyone can do. All the spots at the iconic **Knorr Hut** have been booked solid for months, but I’ve got us covered. I secured these places well in advance so that you can enjoy this incredible route at the best possible time! **WHAT IS THE PLAN?** * **Day 0 - Meet & Greet:** Relaxed day – we all meet at the hotel in the evening, having late evening dinner, preparing ourselves for next day’s adventures. * **Day 1 (Distance – 20 km)** – Today post breakfast, we would start our journey to hut. The hike itself would go through the Reintal valley. During the hike we would pass the impressive Partnachklamm gorge, the secluded Reintal valley, the Reintalangerhütte and at the evening would approach Knorrhütte. It is possible to have a nice lunch there, at their restaurant, So, you do not need to carry on food with you. During the day we would gain around 1400 meters. * **Day 2 (Hike distance <10 km)** – After the early breakfast at the hut, we would start our hike to summit. Although it is quite short, we would gain another 870 meters to reach the summit at around mid-day. After relaxing at the top and enjoying the pristine beauty of the majestic and mighty mountains, we will use the cable car to go down to the city. This hike follows sandy woodland trails and quiet paths along the Havel River, gradually climbing through the forest to reach some of Berlin’s best vantage points. We’ll climb the steps of the historic Grunewaldturm before stopping for a relaxed break at Kaisergarten am Grunewaldturm, a traditional beer garden overlooking the river. From there, we continue through the forest and up to the summit of Drachenberg, where wide views open out across the Grunewald and the distant Berlin skyline. It’s a chance to leave the busy streets behind, enjoy some fresh forest air, and spend the day exploring one of Berlin’s most beautiful landscapes with a group of curious explorers. **WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?** **Grunewald:** Berlin’s largest forest, filled with sandy trails, glacial hills, and quiet lakes. A favourite escape for those looking for nature just outside the city. **Havel River:** One of the major rivers of the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Here the river widens into large lakes and peaceful bays surrounded by forest. **Grunewaldturm:** Built in 1899, this historic observation tower rises above the forest overlooking the Havel. Climb the steps to enjoy wide views over the lakes, woodland, and the distant Berlin skyline. **Kaisergarten am Grunewaldturm:** A classic German beer garden beside the tower. With views across the river, it’s the perfect place for a relaxed break, a drink, or a snack. **Drachenberg:** One of Berlin’s best viewpoints. From the top you’ll see a sweeping panorama across the Grunewald, Teufelsberg, and the Berlin skyline — a memorable way to finish the hike. **WHAT IS THE PLAN?** * **10:30 –** Meet at Nikolassee Station and kick-off with brief introductions before starting our hike into Grunewald Forest. * **11:30 –** Continue hiking the hilly forest trails along the Havel, taking breaks as desired at any of the numerous benches with beautiful lake views. * **14:30 –** Arrive at the Kaisergarten am Grunewaldturm Biergarten for a well-deserved lunch and climb the Grunewaldturm. * **15:30 –** Continue hiking through the peaceful Grunewald Forest and over Teufelsberg towards Drachenberg. * **18:15 –** Reach the top of Drachenberg and take a break to soak up the panoramic views. * **19:00 –** Walk down Drachenberg towards the end station. * **19:20 –** Arrive at Heerstraße Station to conclude our adventure. **WHAT IS INCLUDED?** * Community leader & guide for the entire duration * Access to Google photos album dedicated for this trip for sharing all your amazing pics & videos from the trip. * Access to a WhatsApp group for confirmed participants. **OPTIONAL ADD-ONS:** * Entry to the Grunewaldturm viewing platform is optional.
