You will need a ticket for the ferry to Manhattan towards the end of our tour which costs $4.75 (senior discount available), You can purchase it in advance - easiest through the NYC Ferry App on your phone. https://www.ferry.nyc/ticketing-info/ **Tour Purpose**: This tour honors the 250th anniversary of The Battle of Brooklyn which took place from August 27th - 29th, 1776 during the early months of the American Revolution. We visit several battle locations and follow the route taken by the Americans, who ended up being outnumbered by the morre experienced British forecs, This was the first major battle after the July 4th Declaration of Independence (and the largest battle of the entire war). At 11:00 am we'll meet outside the entrance of the library There are restrooms inside. **Neighborhoods:** Park Slope, Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Fulton Ferry, Manhattan's Financial District. . **ITINERARY AND TOUR DESCRIPTION** **11:00am - Meet in front of at the Main Brooklyn Library at Grand Army Plaza. Arrive early to use the restrooms inside the library.** *Note there is a farmer's market going on nearby with a variety of stalls.* **Check your travel route in advance as there are usually subway line changes on the weekends:** https://www.mta.info/tripplanner/results **Itinerary:** From the library we'll head into Prospect Park and walk through the Battle Pass area, noting the historic markers. Leaving the park we'll follow the escape route taken by the American troops down the Porte Road (today's 1st Street) and then will then head to "The Old Stone House," (pictured), originally a Dutch family farm built in 1699. This was the location of a critical delaying action and battle by a brave Maryland regiment that allowed the American army to retreat to the area we call Fulton Ferry (by the Brooklyn Bridge). We will take the NYC Ferry from there over to Wall Street as we recall the dramatic escape across the East River by 9,000 Americans led by Gen. George Washington, an event which preserved the revolution. **Lunch Break:** The Old Stone House lies within a park with plenty of seating and a restroom. To evade the British, thousands of American troops had to cross the Gowanus Creek (today's Gowanus Canal) and then traveled several more miles to the edge of the East River. We'll follow their route passing through Carroll Gardens, Cobble and Brooklyn Heights. Arrriving at Fulton Ferry by the Brooklyn Bridge, we will visit the site of the dramatic and bold escape from the East River across to Manhattan. For the "grand finale" we'll ferry across the East River ourselves and have a toast at the historic Fraunces Tavern at 54 Pearl Street, the very building where General Washington held his celebratory dinner with his officers at the end of the successful revolution on December 4, 1783. Recalling the Battle of Brooklyn gives us the opportunity to traverse some of Brooklyn's most beautiful historic neighborhoods and historic Lower Manhattan. My intent for this event is that it be a fun, ambitious and interesting, fast paced hiking tour of about 7 miles where we will cover what existed BEFORE Central Park was even built, the history of the Park, and it's design features. We will also see the new Davis Center area where the Lasker Rink used to be as well the significant changes to the landscape up north which now conforms to the original design of the Park. I will stop a number of times to very briefly talk about what we are seeing. That means I talk and you listen or make believe you are listening! Over the years this group has conducted numerous tours of Central Park and I have led several tours of Northern and Southern Central Park for the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). This event will be even better. Much better! We are going to keep things moving as much as possible. On this hiking tour we hope to visit areas such as the Ramble where there will be one short climb, Conservatory Gardens, the Ravine, the Great Hill, the Blockouse and the North Woods where there are waterfalls. Central Park is often considered a work of art and hopefully we can show you why! (Photo by the late and great photographer Sonia Braga) We will probably start in lower/mid Central Park and head north to the tip of the Park. Of course, you can leave any time. We will be zig-zagging quite a bit. Public transportation will be easy to find before and after the event. Registration will be limited to around 20 members or so. We will meet BEFORE 10:15 A.M. and finish around 3:30 P.M. or so NOT far from public transportation at West 96th Street. If you drive, parking is free on Sundays. We plan to start on the east side and finish on the west side. THERE WILL BE A BRIEF LUNCH STOP AT SOME POINT. BRING LUNCH/SNACKS AND WATER. WE WON'T STOP ANYWHERE TO BUY FOOD. We are going to explore Governors Island and will be on the Island as the sun is setting. We will walk as it starts to gets dark -yes there are lights there but not that many! This will be a fun, fast paced 4-5 mile tour of the Island. It's quiet, uncrowded, and a bit eerie out there when it is dark. We will be stopping a number of times to briefly talk about what we see. They are consistently well attended. Must prepay to attend.)* Everyone's favorite Haunted Hunt is back! It's a unique, enjoyable way to socialize, learn and explore outdoors! Clues, Spells, and Curses! Join dozens as they set out onto the streets of the Financial District; the site of graveyards, hauntings and some of the grizzliest deeds ever done! It will be a fun way to explore and socialize. We'll set you up on teams and give you everything you need to know to help find the clues. **How does it work?** If you come alone we will set you up on a team (or you can play with a team) and we'll give you everything you need to know to help find the clues. Each team will have 90 minutes to find as many of the clues we give you. When finished we will return to a set location for socializing. Prizes are awarded to those finding the most clues. **What are we looking for?** Lower Manhattan in the early 1600's till now has been the site of hangings, hauntings, massacres, explosions, and other not so nice and creepy things. You will be scouring Bowling Green to City Hall, visiting (supposedly haunted places), searching for history-markers and research things that happened. **FAQs:** How do I find group? We will meet in front of the Fraunces Tavern.
