A Cinema of Silence: Discussing April

Join us for a discussion of Dea Kulumbegashvili’s April (2024), a stark and unsettling film that moves between intimate human drama, social reality, and something more mysterious and abstract. Rather than simply reviewing the film, we’ll explore its visual language, pacing, use of silence, sexuality, motherhood, and the tension between the everyday and the uncanny. We’ll also discuss what Kulumbegashvili’s austere style makes possible—and what it asks from the viewer. No preparation or specialist knowledge required. HumanArt Hollywood Lighting Masterclass

This Masterclass photography workshop will be focused on teaching various Hollywood lighting techniques to achieve a movie like nostalgic feel. We will be covering how to control your ambient light while using stobe lighting and various light modifiers. It is important to note that attendees must have a good understanding of their own camera controls as will be working primarily in manual mode. Attendees to ensure their cameras have a hotshoe to accept a supplied strobe trigger. This is not another portfolio build. The theme for this street photography event in Melbourne CBD is to find one (or maybe two) locations with an interesting background and to wait for a subject to walk into the scene. **How this is going to work** We will move to 3 different spots in the city where we will allocate about 1.5 hours per spot and let you loose during that time. Find an interesting background and wait for a subject(s) to walk pass to photograph. We ask that you avoid wandering off too far as we will re-group before moving to our next location and do the same thing. I anticipate we will still run this event even if it's a bit wet - you can do photography in the rain. However if the weather is really wet - we may need to postpone. We will then explore Newport Lake Reserve after breakfast and this reserve offers a variety of photographic opportunities, from tranquil lake reflections and walking trails to abundant birdlife including ducks, swans, cormorants, pelicans and smaller native birds often found throughout the reserve. The surrounding bushland and open water also provide excellent landscape and nature photography opportunities. Cherry Lake offers a different atmosphere, with wide open wetlands, boardwalks, expansive skies and additional opportunities for bird and landscape photography — particularly suited to those interested in wildlife, reflections and winter light. Newport Lake Reserve is easily accessible by car or public transport. The nearest train station is Newport Station, approximately a 1.5km walk to the reserve. Bring comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and your favourite lens for nature and landscape photography. The reserve features a scenic 3.5 km walking circuit which takes visitors around the western and northern sections of the lake. Along the way, photographers can explore a variety of landscapes, including the area's fascinating salt marsh habitats, which support a diverse range of water birds and other wildlife. The reserve offers several self-guided nature trail loops totalling approximately 2 km, which takes around 40 minutes to complete. The trails wind through dense stands of eucalyptus and acacia trees, providing excellent opportunities for nature and wildlife photography. The reserve is home to more than 200 plant species and nearly 165 recorded bird species, including Black Swans, wrens, herons, and many other native birds.
