The bookworms are back at Melting Cups for the Fall. Join us on **Saturday morning** **(10 am)** at **[Melting Cups Café](https://www.meltingcups.com/)** Arrive, grab a drink ☕️, pastry 🥐 or both, and settle in the art gallery area (back) where the comfy couches are. Around 10:15 a.m., we’ll have casual introductions sharing what books we are reading. 📖🤓 We’ll wrap up by noon when the café gets busier. We'll try to keep this a recurring event through the Fall. The Writing Group – Halloween Horror Session

The Writing Group – Halloween Horror Session

Tue, Oct 27, 10:00 PM
From The Writing Group
4.9

Join us for first ever genre-specific session! In honor of the holiday, come have a festive cocktail, snack on some candy, and bring your horror genre writing to share. Costumes optional but strongly encouraged. **Itinerary** Our social hour starts at **6 o'clock**, and you can come and meet other writers, enjoy a happy hour, socialize and hang out as you like until 7 when we will start readings. At **7 o'clock** we formally get together as a group to listen to readings from those looking for feedback. * We do not select readers based on order of arrival or a sign-up sheet, so if you have work until late but still want to come and read, you can! * Each reader gets five (5) minutes to read, so please select a section of work which is appropriate for that time limit. * We welcome narrative prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, and scripts (be they for screen or stage). This week, we are reading **horror genre works only**! * We'll then spend another five (5) minutes in discussion. This is time for the listeners to provide feedback on the reading and discussing the craft in general. We welcome (and encourage) constructive criticism, so long as it is done with respect. This is just as important as the reading, and is done as an open conversation not lead by the reader or the host, so no hand raising required! * We try to get to as many people who want to read as we can, so if there are a lot of attendees we will be very strict on time. * We take a short break at **8 o'clock** . At 9 o'clock we finish readings, but you are welcome to stick around! Meet new friends, connect with old ones, exchange longer works for review, or just let loose.

Start your weekend at The New York Historical's library

Start your weekend at The New York Historical's library

Fri, Oct 30, 10:30 PM
From Silent Book Club NYC
4.7

The [New York Historical](https://www.nyhistory.org/) invites you to the Reading Room of the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library! Even though we are meeting in the museum's library, there will not be books available for you to silently read. **Please bring your own book.** Sometimes the museum has events that can be noisy. If you have trouble reading with noise in the background, you may want to bring headphones. **IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FINDING THE GROUP INSIDE THE NY HISTORICAL** 1. Enter the building through the Central Park West entrance and go through Admissions, where you will get an entry sticker. 2. You may be asked for a donation but it’s Pay As You Wish so you may pay as much or as little as you like. 3. Once you get the sticker, you may head up the grand staircase opposite Admissions. 4. As soon as you get to the second floor, you'll see the entrance to the Reading Room on the left. We'll have a sign noting the room is reserved for Silent Book Club. Readers are welcome to **hang out in the Museum until closing at 8:00 PM**. **About the library** The Patricia D. Klingenstein Library is one of the oldest, most distinguished research libraries in the United States and a vital center of research into the history of New York and the nation. The Library's historic Reading Room has been a key stop for generations of scholars and researchers.

Articulating Reasons by Robert Brandom Week 4

Articulating Reasons by Robert Brandom Week 4

Sat, Oct 24, 2:00 PM
From NYC Philosophy and Psychology Readers Community
4.8

Can you know what a word means without knowing what it refers to? Articulating Reasons is an introduction to Inferentialism, a view in philosophy of language holding that words get their meaning not from what they point to in the world, but from the role they play in reasoning, i.e. what follows from a claim, and what it commits you to. Championed by Robert Brandom and others as an alternative to the traditional referential view, inferentialism offers a genuinely different picture of how language works. We'll draw out connections to logic, epistemology, and metaphysics along the way, exploring the broader consequences of taking inference, rather than reference, as fundamental. Participants should read the entire reading before attending this in person meeting. We will read pages 157-210 for the last week. I will be reading from this version [here](https://www.amazon.com/dp/0674006925/?bestFormat=true&k=articulating%20reasons&ref_=nb_sb_ss_w_scx-ent-bk-v2_k0_1_19_de&crid=2DUBJ8LYFZ6RG&sprefix=articulating%20reason). For questions please send me a message or post to meetup. Best, Brian

Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (week 3)

Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (week 3)

Sun, Oct 25, 8:00 PM
From NYC Philosophy and Psychology Readers Community
4.8

Join us for weekly discussions of G. W. F. Hegel's 1807 dialectical quest through consciousness and subjectivity to reason and absolute knowledge, *The Phenomenology of Spirit*. **Required reading for this meeting: B. Self Consciousness - IV. The Truth of Self-Certainty (Pages 104-111) - A.V. Miller edition** I plan to use the A.V. Miller edition though you can use a different edition. A digital pdf can be found here: [https://cominsitu.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/georg-w.-f.-hegel-phenomenology-of-spirit-a.-v.-miller-translation.pdf](https://cominsitu.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/georg-w.-f.-hegel-phenomenology-of-spirit-a.-v.-miller-translation.pdf) This week’s reading will be on the lighter side to give people a chance to reread the earlier sections in tandem with this week’s selection. The Phenomenology is a difficult text and I highly recommend to read along side Hegel (though not required) the accessible secondary lit, “The Logic of Desire” by Peter Kavage. It can be found here: [https://a.co/d/02jcheHr](https://a.co/d/02jcheHr) We'll be meeting at the 180 Maiden Lane Public Atrium on the ground floor of the building downtown.
