But by coming together to read, to educate ourselves, to share what we learn with friends and family, and to take action in our corner of the world we can be a small part of the wave of change humanity desperately needs. Sound like something you want to be a part of? We’d love to have you. Join the Climate Action Book Club this month to read End Times Fascism: And the Fight for the Living World, by Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor. This event is free, but please get your copy from the wonderful English bookstore that hosts our book club meetings, Backstory. To cover Meetup fees, we also request a €2 donation. Originally from the United States, she studied creative writing as an undergraduate and later completed a master’s degree in translation at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. A jack of all writerly trades, she has published poetry and nonfiction and is currently navigating the querying process for her first novel.

En esta ocasión, hablaremos de Al Este del Eden, de John Steinbeck. ***Al este del Edén*** o ***El este del Edén***, a veces también traducida como ***Al este del Paraíso*** (*East of Eden*) es una novela de 1952 del novelista y [premio Nobel](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premio_Nobel "Premio Nobel") estadounidense [John Steinbeck](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Steinbeck "John Steinbeck"). Narra la historia de dos familias, los Trask y los Hamilton, en el periodo comprendido entre la [Guerra de Secesión](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerra_de_Secesi%C3%B3n "Guerra de Secesión") y la [Primera Guerra Mundial](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primera_Guerra_Mundial "Primera Guerra Mundial") y sitúa el núcleo de su trama en el californiano valle de [Salinas](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salinas_(California) "Salinas (California)"), lugar de origen del autor. La novela, construida a modo de monumental [epopeya](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epopeya) de evidentes referentes bíblicos, gira alrededor del problema de la naturaleza del Mal y de su relación con el [libre albedrío](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libre_albedr%C3%ADo "Libre albedrío") y destaca por su magnificencia épica, su profundidad psicológica, la inusual riqueza de los secundarios y lo extremo de algunos personajes y situaciones. Estilísticamente, representa una evolución en el autor, que sin abandonar el [naturalismo](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalismo_(literatura) "Naturalismo (literatura)") de sus obras precedentes, pretende, simultáneamente, dotar de un evidente sentido alegórico a tramas y personajes, lo que confiere a la obra un sentido idealista. *Al este del Edén* es la obra más compleja y ambiciosa de Steinbeck. Fue considerada por el propio autor como la más redonda de sus obras, llegando a definir toda su producción anterior como un simple «entrenamiento» sin más valor que el de servirle como preparación del proyecto: *Creo que todo lo que he escrito hasta ahora ha sido, en cierta forma, un ensayo para esto.*

Y de esto tiene mucho *La amiga estupenda*. Estamos en un barrio pobre de la Nápoles de la década de 1950 donde la violencia de género y la mafiosa son cosas de todos los días. Allí Lenù —la narradora, la niña recatada, responsable y estudiosa— y Lila —la niña «mala», inteligentísima, salvaje e imposible de domesticar—, están a punto de entrelazar sus vidas en una amistad que perdura, sobrevive y se hace más fuerte a pesar de todos los embates (a veces provocados por ellas mismas). **Sobre la autora** «No me arrepiento de mi anonimato. Descubrir la personalidad de quien escribe a través de las historias que propone, de sus personajes, de los objetos y paisajes que describe, del tono de su escritura, no es ni más ni menos que un buen modo de leer», dijo Elena Ferrante en una entrevista. La identidad de Ferrante es aún un misterio, a pesar de todos los intentos que ha habido por averiguar la biografía de quien está detrás de obras maestras literarias como la saga «Dos amigas» —compuesta por *La amiga estupenda*, *Un mal nombre*, *Las deudas del cuerpo* y *La niña perdida*—, *El amor molesto*, *La hija oscura*, *Los días del abandono* y *La vida mentirosa de los adultos*. Through close readings of poems inspired by visual artworks and poems that reflect on the nature of poetry, we’ll explore how writers observe, interpret and write poems. Along the way, students will discover new poets, deepen their appreciation of the craft and develop fresh ways of looking at poetry. **About Rachael Inciarte** Rachael Inciarte is an American writer living in Barcelona, Spain. Rachael holds an MFA in Fiction from Emerson College and their work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net, with writing featured in Poetry Northwest, Salamander, Nimrod, and others. Finishing Line Press published their chapbook of poems, What Kind of Seed Made You, and the collection earned an Eric Hoffer Award in 2022. A previous Poet-in-Residence for Placer County, California, they worked with the nonprofit, CalPoets, to bring poetry into public schools. Barcelona ha perdut catalanitat, elegància i esperit revolucionari. Això diu Santiago Espot, empresari, assagista i una de les veus més incòmodes del debat sobre el futur de la ciutat. Ha acceptat venir a Deep Dive a explicar el seu diagnòstic i, sobretot, com creu que es pot revertir. Una sola nit, no esperis a reservar seient. Ponent: Santiago Espot, empresari, assagista i activista polític Lloc: local per anunciar (Barcelona centre) Dissabte 28 de novembre, portes obertes a les 18:30 Milions de turistes cada any i cada vegada menys veïns. Salaris que cauen mentre els preus pugen. Barris sencers que ja no reconeixem. Tothom hi està d'acord: alguna cosa no funciona a Barcelona. On no hi ha acord és en el perquè, ni en qui en surt guanyant. Espot té una resposta clara, amb noms i cognoms, i no agrada a tothom. Justament per això ens interessa. La nit tracta quatre coses: Quan va començar la decadència: el model de turisme massiu, els vols low-cost i el moment en què l'Ajuntament va deixar de pensar Barcelona com a capital. Qui hi guanya: les elits econòmiques i financeres que, segons Espot, es beneficien del model actual, i per què cap govern no s'hi enfronta. Què faria el primer dia: antimàrqueting turístic, adéu als grans esdeveniments internacionals i mà dura contra el turisme de borratxera. Com es reverteix: què canviaria en la vida diària d'un veí si Barcelona deixés de ser una «sucursal», i per què Espot manté una fe inquebrantable en la ciutat.
