Instructed Drawing Night at the Met

Instructed Drawing Night at the Met focuses on charcoal pencil drawing through close study of the museum’s Greek and Roman figure sculptures. Our instructor, Elizabeth Johnson, will guide students in developing technical control of charcoal pencils while working from these classical forms. After a brief demonstration, students will create charcoal drawings around the gallery with guidance from the instructor. Drawing Techniques with Simon Levenson

In this weekly studio class, students learn to structurally draw a new part of the body each session, building a clear understanding of anatomy, proportion, and form. Working on toned paper with traditional drawing materials, we’ll study the methods of the Old Master, developing drawings through gesture, block-in, and open rendering. By the end of the course, students will have a toolkit for constructing the human figure with confidence and classical refinement. Friday Night Drink and Draw in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

In each 3-hr session, we will draw from a live model, beginning with quick poses to warm up, and then gradually extend the pose length to a final 1 hour pose to finish the evening. First timers welcome. All levels of experience and skill are invited. This is an uninstructed event is for anyone who enjoys or is curious about drawing from a nude figure model. Do your own thing. The environment is laid back, yet professional, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves. No photography allowed. Bring your own beverages. Great tunes will be played, great models will be hired, and we'll make some fantastic artwork. These sessions are moderated by David Bell and Joe Scarpulla, who run Big Object animation studio. David and Joe are stop-motion animators and visual artists, and David is an instructor at Parsons and SVA. RATES 3-hr session: $20 cash / $25 venmo Please RSVP. Introduction to Drawing for Beginners (3 Sessions) with Simon

Do not worry if you don’t know how to draw. This class is specifically designed for you. This class is for you even if you have drawn a bit but want an organized approach to drawing to speed up the learning process and prevent wasted and frustrating efforts. CLASS SCHEDULE: Thursdays, July 23, July 30 and August 6. The ticket price includes all three dates. Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing, including paper and pencil basics, how to use shape and form to create depth, measuring and proportion, and rendering form with shade. What we will cover: Session One: We will learn how to draw the 3-dimensional world on a 2-dimensional surface using and enhancing basic forms. Session Two: We will learn how to use proportion in our drawings while adding a more thoughtful approach to our pencil abilities. Session Three: We will learn shading concepts and create a well-formed, proportioned, shaded drawing. Paper: We will examine the difference between Sketch and Drawing paper, smooth and rough surfaces, and those designed for pencils vs. charcoal. Pencils: Students will learn about the different grades of pencils and how to use them to create more effective drawings. We will practice cross-hatching and shading with pencil “washes.” Erasers: Using both kneaded and plastic erasers, students will create different drawing effects in their drawings.
