MAKE A BURN-BOWL - TRADITIONAL CONTAINER WORKSHOP:

MAKE A BURN-BOWL - TRADITIONAL CONTAINER WORKSHOP:

Sat, Oct 17, 5:00 PM
From Wild Food and Self-Reliance Discovery
4.9

October 17 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm $45.00 – $65.00 Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m. CONTAINER WORKSHOP: LEARN TO MAKE AN EXPEDIENT BURN BOWLJulia Han shows a burn bowl made by Christopher from a burl As part of our Container series, we have taught how to make clay bowls (from local clays), how to make baskets, how to process gourds, how to make yucca and agave quivers, how to make soap stone bowls (yes, a slow process!), and this time, how to make a burn-bowl. A burn bowl is a piece of a log that we slowly burn out with coals, and then scrape it out to create a useful bowl. You will learn by doing. We begin with a dry log, and cut select pieces. Then we split them, and you will slowly burn them out to create a functional bowl. In fact, there are many items that can be made by this process. We will create coals in our fire, which you will then carefully put onto your wood. You let it burn a bit, and then you scrape. You create a little hole, and then you add another coal, and repeat, and repeat. Bring a spoon for scraping. Bring eye protection too. Sometimes this goes quickly, and sometimes not, so bring your water and a snack. Probably Hahamongna, but we will send location to registrants. Limited participation. $65 ($45 seniors/students)

This class is essential for you. Speed up the learning process, “cut to the chase” and enroll in our new Sight Size measuring for the figurative artist and become a “Classical Illusionist” Painting the cast using Sight-Size develops the ability to see shapes and proportions accurately, by continuously comparing the drawn shapes with the cast. This class will develop the accuracy of drawing skills, the ability to correctly judge and paint values, and finesse transitional tones and edges to give the painting the illusion of three-dimensions. The three main objectives of this class: 1\. Drawing \- draw the shapes of the cast in correct proportion\, beginning with the big shapes then the smaller shapes\. 2\. Values\- Learn to correctly judge values by using 5\-7 tone scale which we will mix on the palette\. We will begin by first establishing the three major value relationships: the light shape\, the shadow shape and the background\. 3\. The Illusion of three\-dimensions: Finally we paint the transitional halftones and soften the edges of the form\. This step gives the painting three\-dimensional qualities\, and the form will take the 3D qualities of an object sitting in a space\. These are essential skills to have in your tool box as you move forward to painting portraits, still life, illustrations, etc. **What You'll Learn** Draw the shapes of the cast in correct proportion, beginning with the big shapes down to the small shapes. Learn to correctly judge values by using 5-7 tone scale. Learn to describe how light travels across the form (your cast) Turn and soften the edges of the form. Paint the cast to look like a three dimensional object on the canvas. Learn essential skills to have in your tool box as you move forward to painting portraits, still life, illustrations, etc. Live demonstrations and personalized one-on-one instruction

Los Angeles Axes and Ales Social Throwing

Sun, Oct 4, 9:00 PM
From Blades And Beverages Social Throwing Club

We are getting the group together at a local venue for an evening of axe throwing and conversation. Whether you are a seasoned thrower or have never picked up an axe in your life, this is a low-pressure way to hang out, meet some new people in the area, and pick up a few skills along the way. The coaches on-site will walk everyone through the safety basics and techniques, so you do not need to bring anything other than a pair of closed-toe shoes. The goal here is just to relax and enjoy a drink while we take turns at the lanes. We have reserved a few lanes for the group, which gives us plenty of time to chat between rounds. It is a casual environment, so please feel free to drop by even if you are coming solo; we are always happy to welcome new members to the community. If you think you can make it, please let us know by hitting the RSVP button so we can get an accurate headcount for the lanes. We look forward to seeing you there.
