But their frustration ends at our front door! Whenever an Artist speaks about a "linage" of instruction, it is a proud declaration of where their knowledge came from. Ours is a fusion of Northern European, Classical Italian and California Impressionism. With this background we can hone in on an individual's choice of style once foundations in painting are achieved. The first “initiation” exercise that students in this class must accomplish is our Compass Rose exercise. This skill-based exercise teaches the student so many lessons; first, basic skills like brush strokes, values, color mixing, blending, glazing and much more. We work with a limited palette of colors and then modern pigments for final glazing. At the end of this project the student will be introduced to a new way of “seeing” and develop a visual language which will last a lifetime. The next exercise is a tradition that has been practiced for centuries... copying old master paintings. It’s as if Di Vinci himself were sitting on your shoulder and speaking to you, revealing his secrets from centuries past...and is now your teacher ...and all you have to do is listen. After a series of master paintings, I encourage students to explore many other styles. Speed up the learning process, “cut to the chase” and enroll in our new Sight Size measuring for the figurative artist and become a “Classical Illusionist” Painting the cast using Sight-Size develops the ability to see shapes and proportions accurately, by continuously comparing the drawn shapes with the cast. This class will develop the accuracy of drawing skills, the ability to correctly judge and paint values, and finesse transitional tones and edges to give the painting the illusion of three-dimensions. The three main objectives of this class: 1\. Drawing \- draw the shapes of the cast in correct proportion\, beginning with the big shapes then the smaller shapes\. 2\. Values\- Learn to correctly judge values by using 5\-7 tone scale which we will mix on the palette\. We will begin by first establishing the three major value relationships: the light shape\, the shadow shape and the background\. 3\. The Illusion of three\-dimensions: Finally we paint the transitional halftones and soften the edges of the form\. His unique blend of traditional style with a contemporary twist is a result of two extremes: a formal training in China’s most prestigious art academy, China Central Academy of Fine Arts and intense studies with renowned contemporary painters like Daniel Keys, Tim Rees and Michelle Dunaway in the United States. He is a recipient of the Certificate of Excellence for his painting Ashton in the 20th Annual International Portrait Society of America Competition. Kai has had his work exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US. His work has also been included and published by Poets Artist Magazine and Plein Air Magazine.
