The Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills (week 1)

The Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills (week 1)

Sat, Aug 1, 4:30 PM
From NYC Philosophy and Psychology Readers Community
4.8

The Sociological Imagination is a foundational text in sociology that introduces the concept of the "sociological imagination"—the ability to see the connection between personal experiences and larger social and historical forces. Mills argues that individuals must understand their "personal troubles" (like unemployment or divorce) within the context of "public issues" (like economic recessions or changing family structures) to grasp their own lives and the world around them. The book critiques contemporary sociology for being too abstract and calls for a more humanistic approach that links biography, history, and social structure. **Join us to discuss this classic book over the course of 4-weeks!** Week 1 Sat 8/1 12:30pm-2:30pm The Seahorse Room @ Pier 57 Week 2 Sat 8/8 12:30pm-2:30pm The Seahorse Room @ Pier 57 Week 3 Sat 8/22 12:30pm-2:30pm The Seahorse Room @ Pier 57 Week 4 Sat 8/29 12:30pm-2:30pm The Seahorse Room @ Pier 57 **Reading for Week 1** Chapters 1 & 2 (47 pages) I'll be reading the paperback edition available [here](https://www.amazon.com/Sociological-Imagination-C-Wright-Mills/dp/0195133730/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.tFwLTeRj2oK1G0GAJwinAz2WpGEFRxboXUdsOxahYRhgbJm5N9NqCIaBVaulS723qc1AaGdlMYXYGgf3pZWf4q8JyUNR0fOHNLpT84rtLJr7VFgBUVC0SZbUxV7QCmdVyjHBO4RgT5pmtRCTH3fYtPgRCmOJZeY3kiKyaftnkhsbv3-kzHZA2R59ivvxVvcwQro7kgcYTihFzcEfbU32hZ0mWQd1Yp6WWtw_md-UU4I.48znb_T5jR95CO-7E4HHWZSeGEaqmz3RtbuAgGfvZhc&dib_tag=se&keywords=the+sociological+imagination&qid=1783736514&sr=8-1) [free pdf download](https://annas-archive.gl/md5/24a1a68a90fc966318b2450145ceb74a) \*click on the first slow download option (other formats available too —epub & mobi for kindle—just search in search bar) **Rules for Our Group** **1\. Do the Reading** If you have not done the reading for the week you are welcome to attend and *listen* to the discussion, but out of respect for those who have read, you will not be permitted to participate in the discussion. Finally, **Please update your RSVP if you are no longer able to attend the event.** * inaccurate RSVPs make it difficult for coordinators to plan successful events * inaccurate RSVPs prevent waitlisted individuals from attending \*Multiple no shows may result in losing RSVP privileges for future events.
