About us
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg :)
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will go for the hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We prefer a "clearly recognizable profile photo" to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, please reach out; that's not a problem.
And please make sure that we can reply; check your mailbox settings for the "privacy settings", and allow the group organizers.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several event organizers have joined or were promoted.
We're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route or a famous destination that we have missed, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance, and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
The basic membership in MeetUp is free for users like you, unless you need some of the features that come with the paid subscription. If you mainly attend events and don't use MeetUp as your primary communication platform, you would not need the subscription.
However, the group owner has to pay for the group subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or if you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL. We're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.

Hiking Group 5th Anniversary Party (get on waiting-list!)
"Pavillon Cricket" Walferdange Tennis and Rugby club changing rooms and club house, Rue des Nations Unies, Walferdange, He, LUHello Friends,
Please read all of the information below carefully – especially the sign-up procedure!
"Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg" was founded in May 2021, so this year's annual end-of-summer barbecue and party will also celebrate our 5th anniversary!
## The plan
The location will be the Walferdange Tennis Club pavilion:
https://goo.gl/maps/63psQRMWHfvgrwvS7We will meet there at 18:00, the BBQ will start around 19:30, and the party can go on until 1:00 am or even later (nuit blanche).
The venue is within walking distance of Walferdange train station and the bus stop "Helmsange, Tricentenaire":
https://goo.gl/maps/FfxvC8pbpAE2Bm6P8We highly recommend using public transport!
The last regular buses near the venue leave about 10 minutes before midnight. After that, the nearest stop served by the CN6 night bus is about 2.5 km away.
If you want to come by car, there is the "Parking Stade Prince Henri"
https://maps.app.goo.gl/m92tipjxAHmjH7h29
and a parking lot at "Rue des Nations Unies"
https://maps.app.goo.gl/hc1Dk4d5pZaKUFUU6## The weather
It's Luxembourg, so who knows? There may be rain – or maybe not ;)
Most of the party is planned to take place outside, so please dress accordingly.
If it rains cats and dogs, we can move inside, and we'll also have a tent as usual.## The menu
The menu will be Greek-themed:
Greek meatballs (Keftedakia), Gyros and Souvlaki from the barbecue, fries, various salads and other Greek specialties.
There will also be vegetarian options and vegan sausages. The fixed price for food is €30 per person, including one welcome drink of your choice (beer, wine, crémant or juice).
All additional drinks must be paid for separately at the bar.
The buffet style has worked very well in previous years, and we count on everyone to make sure that everybody gets a fair share. There's no need to rush when the buffet opens – it will be continuously refilled for quite a while.
We also want to make sure that our vegan and vegetarian friends get priority for the vegan sausages. So if you're not vegan or vegetarian, please don't suddenly discover your passion for vegan sausages at the party if you didn't tell us beforehand ;)
## IMPORTANT: The sign-up procedure
Everyone must join the waiting list first. This is the normal registration process – it does NOT mean that the event is already fully booked!
The venue has a maximum capacity of 100 people, which is quite a challenge for a group with almost 3,000 members. We therefore need to confirm participants individually.
To make this work:- The participant limit will initially be set to 1, so the event will appear as "fully booked".
- Please join the waiting list anyway! This is exactly what you are supposed to do.
- I will then move people from the waiting list to the participant list manually until we reach the maximum number of attendees.
- Confirmations will be partly first come, first served, but your participation in our hikes will be the main consideration.
- Priority will go to our regular hikers, people who have joined many hikes this year, and long-time members who have regularly or occasionally hiked with us over the years.
- The "guest" option is strictly only for the "+1" that you usually bring for a hike, not for any random friends that never joined!
So don't worry about your position on the waiting list.
Being #50 on the waiting list does not necessarily mean that 49 people are ahead of you.If you have only recently joined the group and have never attended one of our hikes, please don't be offended if you are not confirmed this time. With only 100 places available, we want this party to be primarily for the people who have actually been part of our hiking community.
## Payment and refunds
- Confirmed attendees will need to prepay €30 per person.
- Once your registration has been confirmed, I will send you the Payconiq and PayPal payment information.
- We can only guarantee refunds for cancellations made before Thursday, the 10th. If your plans change and you cannot make it, please cancel as soon as you know.
- If you need to cancel after Thursday, you will need to "sell your seat" to someone on the waiting list.
## Timeline
We will finalize registrations and prepayments by Wednesday night.
On Thursday, we will give the final details to the venue. After that, we won't be able to make changes or guarantee refunds, so please make sure everything is settled by Wednesday night.## Let's have fun!
The most important part of the evening is simply to socialize: have some drinks together, enjoy good conversations, good laughs and good music.
And yes – there will be a bonfire again! 🔥## One last reminder (in case you missed it)
The event showing as "fully booked" is intentional.
➡️ Join the waiting list anyway. Everyone starts on the waiting list.
I will then confirm participants manually, mainly based on their participation in our hiking events. Thanks for actually reading all the way to the end :)
See you at the party! 🎉
