What we’re about
The Walking Social Club - making friends & adventures since March '24.
Welcome!
A free walking group with occasional events and activities, for adventure lovers who want to explore parts of Cardiff and its surrounding areas of beauty.
For nature, city, and park walks, shorter routes are generally on weekday evenings and longer on Sunday afternoons.
Social events & activities are varied and sporadic!
✌️ We welcome new, friendly faces. Come and say hi - we've all been newbies - I was nervous at my first event, too.
⚠️ Be prepared! Please check the weather forecast and wear sensible and appropriate walking gear and boots. Routes and paths are often uneven, steep, wet, and muddy!
🐕 Dogs are very welcome on our walks (the more the merrier!) but must be kept on a lead in areas that require it. You must be comfortable walking with dogs, as they usually attend every walk.
🥪 Bring some water and some snacks if you get hangry. Some bring a light packed lunch, and we usually stop for 20 mins at the top. Consider getting a cheap seat pad to park yourself on, they are very handy.
🕒 Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend, as it saves us from hanging around. We will set off 10 minutes after the event starts. End times are always estimated (please don't make plans immediately after the end time).
📷 Not everyone wants their photo taken; politely ask before taking pictures of other members at any point during a walk. Please message me if you want a photo of yourself removed.
🗺️ Let's try staying together and remain with the group. Spreading out will naturally occur, but if you are way ahead, please wait at the next plateau or fork in the path. If you get lost, message the walk leader; they will be waiting for you further along the route. If you find yourself falling behind, make an extra effort to catch up, give a shout, and we will always wait for you, as we don't always provide a backstop. We're generally only as fast as our slowest walker, and we're all ok with that.
⭐ If you consider leaving us a public review, it helps the group grow, but please remember you're *not* rating the weather, the music, the restaurant's food quality, or if you didn't like the hills or the view at the top! You are rating the group itself and the free events that we volunteer our time to organise for you to enjoy.
🌎 Feel free to suggest a route you'd like to take or an activity you'd like to do; we love exploring new areas and experiencing new things.
ℹ️ Let us know if you have any questions about the route, additional requirements, needs or health issues you feel we should be aware of.
🏞️ If you're looking for more local rambles, join the lovely bunch at Cardiff Walking & Outdoors group.
Catch you at the next one,
Calum, Shaun, Diane, Molly & Zola. 🤓🤠😺🐾🐾
This group is sponsored by Escape Rooms Cardiff.

From the tiny venues where U2, Coldplay, The Clash played their first gigs in Wales to the Stadium where Oasis staged the first shows of their comeback tour: from the Beatles last ever UK show to the Sex Pistols gig that never happened, but then became infamous...
We’ll hear Cool Cymru stories of Super Furry Animals, of Manic Street Preachers and Catatonia; of The Kinks having an onstage fight that worhthy of the Gallagher brothers had nearly ending the band. Of a local PA business that went on to become one of the biggest techno acts in the world...
Did Cerys Matthews really meet her future Catatonia partner Mark Roberts whilst he was busking outside Debenhams? Did Jimi Hendrix spend the night under the stars in Roath Park after recording a version of the Welsh national anthem? What's the connection between Led Zeppelin, Robbie Williams and the 3rd Marquess of Bute? And did The Rolling Stones really turn a group of nice young ladies into a pack of ferral, sex crazed banshees one evening in 1964 in Sophia Gardens... ?7 attendeesGoodrich Castle, Symonds Yat & King Arthur's Cave
Goodrich Castle car park, Goodrich, HR9 6HY, GBA 21-km/13-mile walk that starts with a whistle stop tour of the most impressive Goodrich Castle, before hiking through Symonds Yat in The Forest of Dean, timed (well, hopefully) to enjoy its autumnal colour show for a bit of 'leaf peeping', if you will.
Boasting stunning views of the valley and the river Wye, which includes walking past the TV show Sex Education's picturesque house, nestled in the hillside.
Along the route is King Arthur's Cave, which some say played a part in the early legend of King Vortigern, a British King who fought the invading Anglo-Saxons.
This event is a little longer than usual to allow for some time in the castle.
⚠️Please note that this route involves a wire rope bridge - see photos for reference- and this will be a recce route, meaning I have not explored it yet, I cannot vouch for its difficulty or terrain, and the end time is approx. If you are uncomfortable with this, please do not attend on this occasion. ⚠️
