What we’re about
Twin Cities Hiking Meetup (TCHM) is for hiking and outdoor enthusiasts who want to join like-minded people to hike on the vast and varied trails in the Twin Cities. Our purpose is to provide a variety of hiking and outdoor opportunities in our area's beautiful natural settings that foster friendships and community. Our members share a strong commitment to leaving our parks, lakes and rivers the way we found them; we embrace a leave-no-trace philosophy.
While TCHM focuses on hiking and hiking related activities, other outdoor activities, such as snowshoeing may be offered. Hikes are held year-round and many of them include a social gathering afterwards! Most of our regularly scheduled hikes take place in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the suburbs, but don’t be surprised to see opportunities to hike in county and state parks outside the metro area.
When joining TCHM, please use your given name or nickname in your profile, along with a clear photo of yourself. This will help us identify you when we see you on a hike or other activity.
There is no cost to join TCHM. However, maintaining our Meetup account costs approximately $300 each year. Periodically we will initiate a fundraiser to help with these costs. Participation in fundraisers is welcomed and voluntary.
TCHM is a place for you to get some exercise, have fun and enjoy your favorite outdoor activity with people who share your interests.
We are dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, welcoming and harassment-free experience for all TCHM members.

See all- Saturday AM Hike - MN River Valley Trails in Bloomington + Scandinavia CafeGideon Pond House, Bloomington , MN
Let’s start our Summer off right with a scenic hike on the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge trails! We will hike from the Pond Dakota Mission Park to the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge and back. Following the hike, join us (optional) for lunch/brunch at Taste of Scandinavia Café, 401 West 98th Street, Bloomington, MN 55420 (952) 358-7490 https://tasteofscandinavia.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Version-2-TOS-Bloomington-Menu-2022-13x19-1.pdf
The Minnesota River Valley is a rich mosaic of plant and animal communities, full of floodplain marshes, wet meadows, fens and lakes. These wetlands are maintained by the river and by the spring-fed streams that drain from the base of the bluffs. The hillsides and bluffs support oak forest and oak savanna remnants, as well as outstanding scenic overlooks.
Plan to hike about 6 miles over about 2+ hours at a medium pace (19-20 min mile). We will pause a few times to take in the natural surroundings.
The terrain is uneven and varies with rocks, roots, loose gravel, mud, dirt, and standing water. There are some hills. We will cross a few shallow water areas-stepping on stones and branches/logs, so you may want to consider waterproof hiking boots and/or hiking poles.
Bugs aren’t usually excessive on this trail, but clothing or DEET spray should be considered for potential ticks and mosquitoes.
Most of our route is shaded, but sunscreen/protection should be considered for a couple areas in the open.Bathrooms: There is a portable toilet at the trailhead and modern bathrooms at the half way point of the hike(Old Cedar Bridge).
Sorry, no +1s, no dogs or children allowed on this hike.
IMPORTANT: Please honor your RSVP and if your plans change update your status to Not Going as soon as you know, even if you are on the Waitlist.
