The Generous Argument format will be used to facilitate this event.
Two people argue for and against a proposal. The proposal will depend on who is willing to argue and what they are interested in arguing. I will suggest a contentious proposal: “Illegal immigrants have been good for the United States. Low-skill immigrants have had a net positive effect on the US economy for the last 50 years via lower prices for everyone and higher wages for mid- and high-skill workers. Illegal immigrants commit violent crimes at lower rates than American citizens. High immigration has helped mitigate against declining birth rates among American citizens and this has been an advantage that the US has had compared to other developed countries. Americans should be more grateful towards immigrants in general, and particularly low-skill immigrants (many of whom are illegal immigrants).”
But the proposal may end up being about something unrelated. There will be time to critique arguments, share one's own thoughts about the proposal, and fact check.
There will be popcorn and cookies for purchase for those who want something to snack on, or who would like to support the project.
