At the dawn of the 20th century, a multi-generational family in the Gullah community on the Sea Islands off of South Carolina – former West African slaves who adopted many of their ancestors’ Yoruba traditions – struggle to maintain their cultural heritage and folklore while contemplating a migration to the mainland, even further from their roots.

Cohen Media Group is proud to present the 25th anniversary restoration of director Julie Dash’s landmark film Daughters of the Dust. The first wide release by a black female filmmaker, “Daughters of the Dust” was met with wild critical acclaim and rapturous audience response when it initially opened in 1991. Casting a long legacy, Daughters of the Dust still resonates today, most recently as a major in influence on Beyonce’s video album “Lemonade.”

Restored (in conjunction with UCLA) for the first time with proper color grading overseen by cinematographer AJ Jafa, audiences will finally see the film exactly as Julie Dash intended.

Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is a devout Roman Catholic who subscribes to an austere moral code influenced by the philosophy of Blaise Pascal. When he spots a pretty girl (Marie-Christine Barrault) at church, he promises to one day marry her. But then an old friend (Antoine Vitez) introduces him to alluring divorcee Maud (Françoise Fabian). After a conversation about love and philosophy, the chaste Jean-Louis spends the night at Maud's place, conflicted about what he desires.

I thought we could stream this French classic. The location is in Chapel Hill, somewhat near the Chelsea, and I'll send directions to "Yes" RSVPs close to the date. There are some people who don't get the organizer emails, so, if you haven't gotten directions by the Thursday before, please message me through Meetup and I'll send them to you directly.

This is a potluck, so please bring some king of food or beverage you think people will like. I suggest posting what you're thinking of bringing in the comments, but only if it's convenient. It's totally cool to pick up something random on the way in. We'll start gathering at 7 and I'll put the movie on around 7:30.

As always with these in-home events, space is limited, so please treat your RSVP as a commitment. You can bring a guest, but, if you are on the wait list, you should each sign up separately. If one person drops out (which does happen), then the first singleton gets accepted off the waiting list, so pairs get skipped over.

This story is from one of King’s novellas and looks interesting. Critics have used words such as “buoyant, unique, philosophical, powerful, fantastical, apocalyptic.” I think there will be much to discuss about this one, which we’ll do over dinner after the movie for those interested.

The movie starts at 3, seating starts at 2:30. We’ll meet in the lobby/coffee shop area to say hi and grab a cup of joe before finding a seat. Please note: This is a relaxed, film-as-a-mutual-interest group, not a “find-a-date” event. Thank you for being mindful of that.

Film Movement Classics presents Shall We Dance? in a new 4K restoration of the original 137-minute film, available uncut for the first time in North America. Shohei Sugiyama (Koji Yakusho) seems to have it all – a high-paying job as an accountant, a beautiful home, a caring wife and a doting daughter he loves dearly. However, he feels something is missing in his life. One day while commuting on the train he spots a beautiful woman staring wistfully out a window and eventually decides to find her. His search leads him head-first into the world of competitive ballroom dancing.

In 1996 my then wife and I went to see this movie at a little arthouse theater in Jacksonville Florida. Five minutes before the end, the film got caught in the projector and partially melted, and they were unable to finish it. To this day I have not seen the ending. Hopefully you will have your reasons for RSVPing for this movie, but this is my reason.

This is scheduled pretty far out, and you can't order tickets for it yet, so I'm listing it as tentative. If the time stays the same, we'll gather at 2:45 for this 3:00 movie. Afterwards, we can walk over to a nearby restaurant for dinner and discussion.
