What we’re about

Meeting new people and making new friends as an adult is so damn hard. Specifically, this group endeavors to create a fun and inclusive space that connects (older) adults looking to meet, game and otherwise hang out with like-minded nerds in small, in-person (and possibly online) gaming groups. While we may target the Arlington, Belmont, Lexington, Malden, Medford, North Cambridge, Somerville, Watertown, Winchester and Woburn areas in particular, residency in the aforelisted isn't required. It just makes things more convenient given where things have been hosted.

The games we play are all of the tabletop variety. Namely:

  • role-playing games
  • euro-style strategy board & card games
  • theme-rich immersive co-op games

So, think more Carcassonne, Betrayal at House on The Hill, Settlers of Catan, and Mansions of Madness and less Monopoly, Scrabble, Poker and Chess.

Right now, this group hosts a small monthly event but its purpose, really, is to provide a forum for its members to publicize their own events, form their own local gaming groups as well as make it easier for group members to find games to join as well as find likeminded peeps to nerd out with.

POSSIBLE EVENTS

  • Regular in-person game nights (monthly, weekly, whatever)
  • Virtual game nights via Board Game Arena, Google Meet, Discord, or whatever service
  • Virtual/in-person tabletop RPG gaming
  • Party game nights (Jackbox, Cards Against Humanity, Joking Hazard, etc.)
  • Game library swaps/loans
  • Group attendance at large events (PAX East, Gen Con, Unity Games, comic cons, etc.)
  • Game prototype playtesting sessions
  • Unofficial game tournaments

Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting into tabletop gaming, everyone is welcome to join us for game nights, discussions, and other such game events as we make ourselves some new but ever so nerdy friends.

LET'S GO!

SAFE SPACE COMMITMENT
Tabletop Nerds This Side of The Charles aims to be an inclusive group, welcoming folks from all walks of life. Homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia and bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. Neither will any predatory behavior. Offenders of this policy will be reported to the Meetup administrative body and larger member community.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD & PERSONAL VETTING
New members will observe a 2-month probationary period wherein they must attend one of our events or be personally vetted within that time. If they fail to do either within 60 days of joining, they will be removed from our roster. This is to ensure that our membership is void of bot accounts, scammers, user data harvesters, or lurkers who are looking to score internet clout by belonging to Meetup groups without actually participating. Bear in mind that this policy means that prospective members who have completely private profiles or lack a personal photo in their profiles may receive heightened scrutiny and may not be granted entry until they demonstrate that they are in fact a genuine human being looking to join.

It could very well be that legit folks who never got around to participating for whatever reason (social inertia? scheduling availability? medical whatsits?) wind up getting ousted by this policy. So, those who have been (wrongfully) kicked out are welcome to apply to join again later.
