PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Join SW Photo Club to learn from William Martinez about Kolari Vision infrared photography and how infrared camera conversion are done. Kolari Vision, specializes in infrared, ultraviolet, and full spectrum imaging systems that allow photographers and researchers to capture wavelengths beyond what the human eye can see. Visible light only represents a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, roughly 400–700nm, while infrared light exists just beyond that range. Camera sensors are naturally sensitive to infrared, but manufacturers install an internal infrared blocking filter to prevent it from contaminating normal color images. Infrared photography works by blocking visible light and allowing infrared wavelengths to reach the sensor, either with an infrared filter placed on the lens or by converting the camera so infrared light can pass through to the sensor more efficiently.
Infrared conversions replace the camera’s internal infrared blocking filter with either a clear full spectrum filter or a dedicated infrared wavelength such as 590nm, 665nm, 720nm, or 850nm. Lower wavelengths allow for colorful infrared imagery, while higher wavelengths produce high contrast black and white results. There are also additional considerations when shooting infrared, including the need for IRND filters that properly control both visible and infrared light, as well as lens performance and white balance adjustments. With the right equipment and workflow, infrared imaging can reveal detail and contrast that simply cannot be captured with standard photography.
