Sunday Alternative - Reading

Join us for a walk in nature. This will be an approximate 8.5 mile (ish!) round trip from Arborfield Cross Recreation Ground Car Park which is free (Swallowfield Road, Arborfield Cross, RG2 9PU) what3words: reworked.mice.correct. This is not a huge car park so lift-share where possible. There is usually some space for on-street parking in Swallowfield Road if required.

We’ll start at 10.00 am and wander through an assortment of terrain including fields, lanes and some beautiful wooded areas. We’ll touch on places such as Great Copse and The Coombes, which is awash with elegant Silver Birches and hopefully some vibrant autumnal colours. The pace will be moderate; we’ll stop for a quick lunch half way so bring something nice to eat. The Bull Inn is situated at the end of the walk to stop for refreshments.

The walk contains mainly flat paths but there are some undulations/steepish slopes in The Coombes woodland. There is a total of 350 ft ascent and descent.

We will walk along a well frequented lane for a short while where we will need to be careful of the cars
There is a small Ha Ha type wall after the lunch stop which is about 1.5-2ft high. We can talk about this, there is an option to avoid it.
Please dress appropriately for all weather and terrain conditions.
Wear good sturdy shoes, preferably with ankle support, and carry a bottle of water and necessary medication.
This walk encompasses countryside and environments where all the usual risks of injury during such walks apply, such as but not limited to: interactions with road traffic, joggers, cyclists, e-scooters, other members of the public, animals, plants (allergic reactions), uneven surfaces, including protruding tree roots and potholes and there may be low overhanging branches.
Some tracks may be muddy and slippery, and conditions may be wet if it has been or is raining.

Join us for a walk in nature. This will be an approximate 7.5 mile round trip from Crowthorne railway station.

We will walk round the outskirts of Wellington College into Edgbarrow Nature Reserve which is a mixture of heathland, grassland and high forest, including magnificent oak and beech trees. From here we will head to Wildmoor Heath, a lowland heath area which is both a Special Protection Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest. We will then circle round Broadmoor Farm Meadows before heading back through Wildmoor Heath and down The Killometre to arrive back at the station. The pace will be moderate and there are some inclines.

This walk will start at 11am from Crowthorne Railway Station (carpark next to Platform 2). The cost is £2.50 per day (cashless parking APCOA connect -be aware phone signal may be poor). The train from Reading should arrive at 12.38, but please check the timetable and any service updates before travelling.

The Hive serves craft beer, coffee and cakes and is situated near the station on Dukes Ride, if anybody would like post walk refreshments.
