What we’re about

This is a study group, or book club if you will, for the thoughtful reading and discussion of the great classic literature in philosophy, psychology, sociology and related areas throughout history.

Each event will have a syllabus of reading that should be done before the event, and the participants are expected to have done the reading and prepared for a discussion.

Depending on the members in the group, we can branch out into related topics and/or media forms.

The event will be free of charge and are not affiliated with any organization. The place can vary, but will likely be at some café of choice. In order to have good discussion while giving everyone the time and space to talk, I see 3-5 people as the ideal group size for a conversation. If an event has more attendees, we'll split into smaller sub-groups.

That said, we are here to have fun and any guideline can be changed if we want it to!

Note
Currently, the organisation of this group, as well as member discussions, happens on Discord. Join us there using this link if you'd like to participate.

Next meetup, we turn to the poet, philosopher, and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). Best known internationally for his poetry, Tagore was also a profound thinker on the human spirit, creativity, and the search for meaning. His thoughts inspired thinkers across the globe, from Einstein to W.B Yeats to Gandhi.

In The Religion of Man (1931), Tagore lays out a vision of spirituality that is not tied to dogma or institutions, but rooted in the creative spirit and the fullness of human life. He speaks of humanity’s “surplus,” that reaches beyond survival toward art, love, and unity with the universe. The work combines poetic language, religious reflection, and philosophical exploration, offering an inclusive idea of the divine as something realized in human creativity and fellowship rather than created from above.

While you are obviously welcome to read as much of the book as you want, during the meetup we will discuss Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5 and 13 in order to keep the reading to a reasonable length. These chapters total about 75 pages. The book can be downloaded here https://tinyurl.com/religionofman

Everyone is welcome. Hope you want to join us in our discussion about this work and about spirituality and meaning =)
