What we’re about
The Shorewalkers:Members Only Group is open to active members of Shorewalkers. Our volunteer hike leaders lead over 250 walks a year, on weekends and throughout the week. To become a member, visit our website Membership Levels - Shorewalkers.
Who We Are:
Shorewalkers is a non-profit environmental hiking organization founded in 1982. Our mission is to promote and preserve New York City’s waterfront and raise awareness of its shorelines by leading invigorating hikes throughout the metropolitan area. Our signature event, The Great Saunter, is a 32-mile trek along Manhattan's shoreline, held annually on the first Saturday of May. Additionally, we host the Great Saunter Fall Challenge, a virtual event in early October.
To send a message to the Shorewalkers organization, use the link Contact Us - Shorewalkers or email Support@Shorewalkers.org.

- Reverse Summer Streets/Manhattan Aug 9 🚸 Dyckman St to Brooklyn BridgeAnne Loftus Playground, New York, NY
Join us for Reverse Summer Streets, to once again walk along car-free Broadway/Park Avenue and beyond. The second Saturday in August we’ll reverse course and walk north to south, from Dyckman Street to the Brooklyn Bridge; 12 miles, approx. 6 hours, point to point, moderate pace with many drop-out points.
Meet: Saturday, August 9, 7:45 a.m. at the Anne Loftus Playground, through the gates at the SE corner of Dyckman/Broadway/Riverside, near the restrooms (which will be open!). Our location is at the A/Dyckman Street stop and two blocks west of the No. 1 (Dyckman Street). We will walk at 8 a.m. sharp. [Note extra-early start because we'll be on the sunnier side of the street, and we are walking four miles more than past years.]
Course: Our expanded course runs from Dyckman Street and Broadway to 110th/Central Park North, then along 109th to Park Ave. and points south. Once on Park Ave. the route is easily accessible by the 4/5/6 subway lines. Note that streets reopen to traffic at 3 p.m.
- Later start/shorter distance? Find us at Columbia University Lee C. Bollinger Forum, 125th/Broadway, between 9:30 and 9:45 (approx) during our first restroom stop.
Restrooms: Please use the restroom at Anne Loftus before we begin. We will have restroom stops at Columbia Univ. Forum (125th Street), in Central Park, at 550 Madison (56th Street) and Union Square.
More info: The full program of Summer Streets has activities in all five boroughs:
Bring: Hat, sunglasses, sunblock, lunch/snacks, and water. Water will be available for refillable bottles at NYC Water-on-the-Go fountains along the way. No extended lunch break planned but we will take a few extra minutes at 550 Madison.
End of Walk: We plan to stop briefly at Eileen's Special Cheesecake at 17 Cleveland Place, and then continue approx 0.8 miles to finish at City Hall Park, accessible to all Chambers Street subways. (Brooklyn Bridge is also part of Summer Streets this year -- if you wish to continue feel free but your fearless leaders are done.)
Contacts (day of hike only): Christine 646-691-0764, and Gina 347-842-5452. Please ID yourself if texting, and if you lose the group during the walk, call. Also let us know if you decide to leave the group to linger at one of the official Summer Streets rest stops.
