What we’re about
This is a book club for readers of sci-fi / fantasy books from the last few years. We select full length novels from the current year's Hugo, Locus, and Nebula Awards, which are the big mainstream (?) awards for the genre. When those run short, we will also reach back for some books from the last decade. The group leans a little toward the SF, though we do read the fantasy, and the boundaries are not clear. We tend to avoid retellings of the Arthurian legends. We sometimes also get into novellas, novelettes, and short stories, but the novels are the focus. We try to read series of books in sequence.
Since late 2023, roughly every month, we meet in the garden of my Alameda house when weather allows, or we meet in the living room with two cats. I offer a variety of hot beverages.
We cap the number of people at 7. When a book is popular, we have two sessions for each book. Since people are often on the wait list, no shows are removed from the group promptly. There is a strong emphasis on updating your RSVP and being reliable.
The house is level-entrance, accessible to wheelchairs, though the toilet is not ADA compliant (too narrow). There is plenty of street parking, biking is easy, and public transportation (20, 51A, and O transbay) stops nearby.
