What we’re about
Going to the movies used to be a thing I did by myself. But lately I've rediscovered how much fun it is to go with friends and to talk about it with them afterwards. So, here we are!
Providence Movie Club is a group where we'll go to a movie and then grab a drink after it's over to hang out and chat. I'm pretty omnivorous with my movie taste, so one week we could see something at the Avon, and the next be front and center at Morbius. Post-movie will change as well and hit bars, coffee shops, breweries, boba tea places, etc.
Don't worry about being a film expert or anything. I imagine conversations will go like most book clubs where you talk about the book for seven minutes and then everyone drops it.
See you at the movies!

Movie Club Mixer at Long Live Beerworks
Long Live Beerworks, 40R Sprauge St. ,, Providence, RI, USI can't believe the last event of the year is already upon us. [crying] But we're ending the year at my favorite brewery in Providence: Long Live Beerworks! And it'll be on a Saturday! I know. I know. I know.
The mixers are a great and fun way to familiarize yourself more with Movie Club and its members. As a reminder, there's no movie portion, only the hanging out part. Old members, new members, and anyone who has wanted to check out the group is welcome! It's just a space for people to socialize, no pressure.
The event will start at Long Live Beerworks at 6:00pm on Saturday, December 13th. It'll end at 9:00pm. Though it'll be a Saturday, so most likely we'll go someplace afterwards, too. (The speakeasy Juniper is in the same building as Long Live.) I'll have a pile of name tags on a table for everyone to help differentiate who's there for the mixer and who's just there. Long Live has beer and assorted snacks available. There also might be a food truck that day with more options.
See you there!

Gremlins at White Owl
White Owl, 1074 Hope St, Providence, RI, USBack in April, we did a dinner and a movie type thing at White Owl in Providence. I wasn't sure how it would go because it was going to be more watch party than screening, but people responded well to it. Well, White Owl reached out, and so we're doing it again!
Join us on Wednesday, January 7th for a watch party of Gremlins at White Owl. The event will start at 6:30pm for people to order food/drinks and socialize. Then I'll start the movie around 7:30ish. White Owl is a smaller space so you'll be able to find us no problem.
In Gremlins, after receiving an exotic small animal as a Christmas gift, a young man inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet, which unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous creatures on a small town. Also, I LOVE GIZMO!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch at AS220 Black Box
AS220 Black Box Theater, 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI, USSo happy to be back at AS220 and playing a film that holds a dear spot in my heart! I remember watching this for the first time in high school. There was this punk girl named Kate who just transferred to our school. And she must have seen something in me and my friend because she invited us over to her house to watch movies on a regular basis. This was one she showed us one day, and afterwards I was like [starry eyes emoji].
I always love using a Criterion description if there is one, so I'll do that here: With this trailblazing musical, writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell and composer-lyricist Stephen Trask brought their signature creation from stage to screen for a movie as unclassifiable as its protagonist. Raised a boy in East Berlin, Hedwig (Mitchell) undergoes a traumatic personal transformation in order to emigrate to the U.S., where she reinvents herself as an “internationally ignored” but divinely talented rock diva, characterized by Mitchell as inhabiting a “beautiful gender of one.” The film tells Hedwig’s story through her music, an eclectic assortment of original punk anthems and power ballads by Trask, matching them with a freewheeling cinematic mosaic of music-video fantasies, animated interludes, and moments of bracing emotional realism. A hard-charging song cycle and a tender character study, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a tribute to the transcendent power of rock and roll.
Join us on Sunday, January 11th for a 7:00pm screening of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the AS220 Black Box theater. Doors open at 6:45pm, and we'll start the movie around 7:00ish. For anyone interested, we'll go to the AS220 bar afterwards to hang out (or someplace else downtown depending on the mood). I know this is super close to the Gremlins event, but I have to schedule it here because I'll be MIA for a little bit getting a septoplasty.
This is a ticketed event, and tickets are $7 each. You can pay with cash or card at the door. AS220 will soon have a preorder link up as well if you want to go down that route. Feel free to drop a comment if you get lost or have any questions. The Black Box theater is located at 95 Empire Street in downtown Providence, to the right of the AS220 bar.
