the sound of music is our destination and then Islands in the sky. it will be 11 to 12miles round trip. pace moderate to slower. lots of trees and views. some trails may be steep. poles recommended

There will be 1500 feet of climbing up hill in the beginning and then after that it is more moderate.
***Breathtaking Scenic Views **– The property features extraordinary landscapes of the Russian River valley, coastal mountain ridges, and ancient redwood and Douglas fir forests.
** *Wildlife Connectivity **– A crucial link in a wildlife corridor spanning from Marin to Mendocino counties, the property will enable wildlife to continue to move between habitats.
*** Redwood Forest Protection **– Sustainable management will promote long-term forest health and resilience against climate change impacts, including for approximately 50 old-growth redwoods.
** *Preservation of Unique Conifers **– Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park will preserve habitat not only for redwood trees, but also for Douglas fir and Sargent’s cypress. The property also hosts the more unusual California nutmeg trees, a species in the yew family that is considered “vulnerable” due to logging that eliminated the tree in portions of its historic range.
*** Improved Public Access **– Monte Rio, a community with fewer outdoor recreation opportunities, will gain greater connectivity to the Sonoma Coast.
** *Watershed and Salmon Habitat Protection **– The land includes vital spawning streams for coho salmon and steelhead trout, essential to local biodiversity.

The hike will start at Shell beach where we can cross highway one and then go to Redhill and enjoy views of the Russian River. We will be back to our cars after 5.5 miles of hiking but then we can enjoy the scenic Kortum trail heading towards Goats rock and blind beach.

You can choose a shorter hike about 5 miles or enjoy a longer hike
Driving directions: from Marin County or Petaluma take Bodega Hwy to Highway 1 and go north from the town of Bodega Bay and go about 5 miles north on Hwy 1 to Shell beach in the Sonoma Coast area.
From Santa Rosa or north, take River Road to hwy 116 out to the coast and go south on hwy 1 about 2 miles.
The park is north of Wright's beach and South of Goat's rock.
Parking is free.
Kortum trail is very scenic, and you can see the Sun set rocks where Spirit of Adventure as climbing events.
There's a bathroom at Shell Beach but no running water. Please bring water and a lunch or snack.
Driving directions from River Road or Hwy 116:
Drive past Guerneville and continue on Highway 116 to Highway 1. Turn left toward Bodega Bay, cross the Russian River Bridge, continue 1.6 miles south to the Shell Beach parking lot on your right.
Ticks are in the woods! Long pants, long sleeve shirts, hats and repellent are recommended.
Guests are allowed if you feel they can handle the distance of 11 miles.
