Moa Outdoors + is a non-profit meetup hiking group dedicated to organizing safe, enjoyable, scenic and at times adventurous hiking adventures in and around Auckland and further afield. We warmly welcome hikers of all levels from around the globe, inviting you to experience the natural splendor of New Zealand with us. Beyond hiking, we offer ample opportunities for photography, socializing, and making new friends. We try to stop for a break or similar after the event - this is optional.
My name is Noel, I have taken over from David as the lead. David will stay on as Co Organiser. We are lucky to have the support of Rob as Event Organiser. Together we would like Moa Outdoors+ to continue to provide opportunities for people to get Outdoors+. We are looking for another (Event Organiser) and team members to help out. Reach out if this is of interest.
In our fast-paced modern world, we believe every Aucklander deserves a sanctuary where they can be themselves, stay active, and enjoy nature with a great team, sharing laughter on weekends. Thus, we intend to continue with the idea of creating a year-round calendar of well planned hikes based on seasons, weather, preferences, and holidays. We understand that refining this system will take time, and we greatly appreciate and eagerly look forward to receiving any feedback or advice that will benefit everyone. Please don't hesitate to email us at [feedbacks.moasocialhikings@yahoo.com](mailto:feedbacks.moasocialhikings@yahoo.com).
Our hikes are primarily scheduled on Saturdays, though we occasionally organize excursions on Sundays and public holidays as well. As an active hiking group, we focus on easy, intermediate through to advanced hikes, with the occasional extra challenging hike during the summer months. We are worked hard on broadening the menu to cater for a wide range tastes. There are many events that are not yet tested/published so its all very exciting. Are you interested in being part of the Moa recce crew? Ask us about this... Moa Outdoors+ prides itself on fostering a friendly and inclusive group culture. We encourage open communication, mutual care, cultural exchange, and empathy among our members.
You can contribute to events through positive actions. For example, bring with you;
- Feedback for Organisers/Hosts
- Ideas for future events
- A compliment for another attendee
- Helping other attendees in what they might perceive as a difficult situation (most important)
When you see this... + it means this event is a more difficult than normal. We also use a grading system and try to give as much info as we can about the event so you can decide if it’s suitable for you. If you're not sure, please message the host and they can share some more information with you.
Qualification
All New Members are required to do a Grade 3.0 or lower with us before doing any event that is higher Grade. This to ensure that expectations are aligned for the benefit of New Members, Returning Members and Regular Hikers. If you see an event that you like to attend that is higher than 3.0, please jump in on an earlier 3.0 or lower grade event. The Organiser can allow exceptions to this if we know you, or if you can share with us the level of fitness and include some areas/tracks you may have hiked in the last three months. Another general rule of thumb would be, could you walk to the summit of Mt Eden without stopping?
We look forward to embarking on many adventures with you 😊.

Moa Outdoors+ Liability Disclaimer & Assumption of Risk
1. Voluntary Participation and Inherent Risk
By joining Moa Outdoors+ and RSVPing to our events, you acknowledge that hiking, tramping, and coastal trekking involve inherent risks. These include, but are not limited to, slippery terrain, steep climbs, unpredictable weather, and tidal hazards. You choose to participate voluntarily and at your own risk.

Each member is responsible for:
Assessing their own fitness level against the Grade and Difficulty described in the event.
Ensuring they have the correct gear (footwear, 2L+ water, rain protection and suitable clothing for the season/environment).
Following the instructions of the Lead/Host for the safety of the group.
Managing their own medical conditions and carrying necessary personal medication.

6. Payment
Moa Outdoors+ events are not free. The group has costs such as Meetup subscription, safety equipment etc. We use the event fees to cover these costs. It is important that everyone that attends pays on the day. This can be done online using details in the event description or to the host/helpers pre start. In the unlikely event of a non payment, we will make contact to remind you. After that, you will be removed from the group. Regular hikers will get another chance to attend an event, 4 chances to pay before being removed from the group. Waihi Beach - Orokawa Bay & Bowentown Headland
On Saturday we will travel to Waihi Beach and Bowentown to do a selection of hikes.
Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay affords a bush track with a cliff top vibe and easterly aspect over looking the ocean. The beach at Orokawa Bay is lovely and often frequented by surfers that carry their boards in along the same route. WWW stream/bush route is more adventurous with a constant being rock hopping in the stream bed (path of least resistance) and when not possible we take on short stints through an old track with lots of high cutty grass. Its gets a bit gorgy at the end. At Bowentown Headland, we will do a short descent to the coastal area for brief look across the northern entry to Tauranga Harbour in the hope of spotting a seal (safe distance 20m). Our short circuit takes us via a beach as well as some elevation, with the headland providing long views up the coast and down past The Mount.
This event was rescheduled from 3/10 to accomodate with tide at Bowentown and to allow Te Rau Puriri to work with the tide also.
THE DIRT
***Orokawa Bay Track*** - moderate (AllTrails)
Type: out and back 🌳
Distance: 6.3k
Elevation gain: 274m
Terrain: natural track that is a bit muddy in the wet, beach
Duration: 2 hours
Grade: 3.0 moderate to fast, NOT slow
A good track to Orokawa Bay. We may have to time our runs between waves to get to the track start given the tide.
***WWW route (former track)*** - difficult/adventure/bash
Type: out and back 🏖️💦
Distance: 2.7k
Elevation gain: 61m
Terrain: difficult and completely overgrown track and rocky stream bed, slippery terrain some low level scrambling through a rock/log jam is required
Duration: up to 2 hours depending on speed of the group.
Grade: 3.5 slow to moderate speed given the terrain, one can't move quickly in here.
From this point, the route is poor and very likely you will get wet feet (unless you wear waterproof boots) as we walk and rock hop a small stream bed much of the way. When not in the stream bed, we will slip through long cutty grass! Minimum you'll need a good jacket, eyewear, a hat & possibly gloves for protection. If the bush is wet, you'll get wet! It gets a little gorgey with high walls as we near the payoff. This part of the day is 100% an adventure/bash, rather than a hike/walk!
***Bowentown Headland***
Type: loop 🦭🌈🗻
Distance: up to 5k (this can be reduced, depending on time)
Elevation gain: up to 201m
Terrain: natural track, stairs and rocky terrain, beach asphalt
Duration: up to 1.5 hours
Grade: 3.0
We aim to get here for near low tide (0.41m at 1.36pm) and check out the Katikati entrance to Tauranga Harbour. We will do a circuit around the headland. There is a bit of elevation in this circuit despite it being a short but you'll get some good views if the weather plays ball. We will also get to pop down to water level briefly.
Combined
• Time: Approx. 5.5 hours plus 20 minute drive
• Distance: 14-16 km
• Elevation gain up to 536m
• Difficulty: ok for regular hikers, beginners could find it difficult. The adventure aspect of this one will not be to everyone's taste.
• Grade: 3.0
This is a slightly longer day than our winter events. The hike will start on time (we are managing "drivers home time") so please do not be late. To ensure we finish on time, we will need to keep moving. This is important as drivers have the responsibility of getting people home. The intended finish time is so that we avoid driving in the dark. Moving the start time forward by a half hour and/or skipping/reducing the optional refreshments are all options that can be looked at closer to the time and on the day.
An alternative hike to WWW track - host to decide
***Waihi Beach Trig and Forest Loop*** - moderate (AllTrails)
Type: Loop or out and back to Trig, if that's what time allows
Distance: 6.6k (plus 1.6k street walk)
Elevation gain: 234m +
Terrain: well maintained and shaded, 200 steps, forest, street
Duration: up to 2 hours
30 minutes car park (return out and back)
45 minutes Trig (as out and back)
45 minutes Forest (additional for a loop)
Grade 3.0 moderate to fast, NOT slow
The reward is wonderful views.

Descent into Firewood Creek, Southern Hakarimata
Hakarimata Summit Track car park, Brownlee Avenue, ngaruawahia, NZOn Saturday we will descend a well formed track into Firewood Creek, Southern Hakarimata Scenic Reserve in search of the location of a historic rail trestle bridge the site of the 1933 train crash where on 28 March, in wet conditions, a coal laden train and carriages careered away from Glen Massey shunting yard. The driver stayed on to sound the whistle to alert people along the track and to see if he could gain control of the train, choosing not to jump off when he could. After manouvering it at speed through much of the route the train jumped the bridge at Firewood Creek and crashed into the stream. The carriages followed and landed on the engine killing the heroic driver instantly. It may not be possible to get all the way to the referenced below historic trestle bridge location due to Firewood Creek Rail Platform having multiple bridges now lost to time but hopefully we can find something worthwhile at the end of the trail.
This day starts by firstly climbing to Hakarimata Summit using the stairs from Brownlee Ave Waterworks site. This is very steep and high intensity cardio experienced over 1,349 steps! In all likelihood, we will make it to the top each in our own time. This route is very busy, so it doesn't work well travelling in a group anyway. Go at your own speed and everyone gets together at the top. This is an hour of hard climbing. Please use your own judgement on your ability to achieve this climb. If you can't, the alternative is to return to the car park and wait. Make your choice carefully.
After a short break for all including the last to arrive, we head south along the Hakarimata Range route to connect with the Rail Trail at the junction of Firewood Creek. We aim to explore west at this junction for as far as possible the intention of finding the location of a train crash. This may involve some off the beaten track for around 2k each way. Another part of Firewood Creek is a long-term native fish monitoring site and is vulnerable to disturbance. However, there is one area where attendees may choose to get wet feet rather than do a short step up on potentially loose ground above the creek with no hand holds. After going as far as we can along the old rail platform, we back track this section of the day until we reach the Hakarimata Rail Trail, and then further on we will return to the car park via Waingaro Road. You can expect this to be a bit of a grind.
Kauri Grove, Parker Road
If we finish early/have time, we will pop into Parker Road to check out an estimated 1,000 year old Kauri, Waikatos largest, near the northern start point of the Hakarimata Walkway. This is up to 3k for the loop. We can do an out and back to the grove in 30 minutes.THE DIRT -
• Time: 4.5 hours
• Distance: 12k loop with out and back
+Brownlee Ave to Summit 2k 1 hour
+Summit to Rail trail 3.5k 1-1.25 hours
+Firewood/Windy Creek return 4k 1-1.25 hours
+Rail Trail & Waingaro Road 3.5k 0.75-1 hour
• Elevation gain: 400m+/-
• Difficulty: Very steep relentless stair climb - hard.
• Terrain: timber stair, very well formed steps on descent, bush walk with some mud and one place above the river on loose ground with no hand holds where extra care is needed (avoiding this is possible by wading in the creek), rail trail and foot path/road
• Grade: 3.0 (stairs 3.5) moderate pace - whilst this is a 3.0, the stairs will sort you out. Exercise caution - if you are a new member, I will most likely move you to Not Going.LOCATIONS
