Kyoto Multicultural Meetup

Do you enjoy sketching outdoors, or simply spending some relaxed time walking through the city and nature?

Sketch & Stroll is a new trial event for enjoying a little drawing, walking and conversation together outdoors.

Bring your favourite drawing materials — pencils, markers, brushes and paints, a sketchbook, iPad, or whatever you like to use.

You don’t need any drawing experience at all. Miyuki, who’ll be hosting this event, enjoys sketching simply as a hobby herself, so beginners and anyone who just fancies giving it a try are very welcome.

We’ll meet up first, then walk together to the Kamogawa riverbank alongside the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. We’ll find a nice spot there and spend some time sketching, chatting, enjoying the scenery, or simply doing our own thing at our own pace.

Feel free to join us partway through or leave early if you’re short on time. We’d just appreciate it if you could let Miyuki know when you arrive or before you leave.

There’s no lesson and no need to be “good at drawing”. Just bring something you like to draw with and enjoy some quiet, slightly creative time alongside other people.

屋外でスケッチしたり、街や自然の中をのんびり歩いたりするのは好きですか？

Sketch & Stroll は、外で絵を描いたり、歩いたり、おしゃべりしたりしながら、一緒にゆったりとした時間を楽しむための新しいトライアルイベントです。

鉛筆、マーカー、筆や絵の具、スケッチブック、iPadなど、自分の好きな画材を持ってきてください。

**絵の経験はまったく必要ありません。**今回ホストをしてくれるミユキさん自身も、趣味としてスケッチを楽しんでいます。初心者の方や、「ちょっと描いてみたい」という方も歓迎です。

まず集合場所に集まってから、みんなで京都府立植物園沿いの鴨川河川敷まで歩きます。そこで気持ちのいい場所を見つけて、スケッチしたり、おしゃべりしたり、景色を眺めたりしながら、それぞれのペースで過ごしましょう。

**イベントの途中から入っても、途中でお帰りになっても結構です。**その際はホストのミユキさんに一声かけていただければ嬉しいです。

レッスンはありませんし、「上手に描く」必要もありません。好きな画材を持って、誰かと一緒に、静かで少しクリエイティブな時間を楽しんでください。

Konnichiwa, minasan!

I’m really glad it’s finally getting cooler after the scorching summer we’ve had. If that’s a sign that autumn is on its way, we should start thinking about organising some outdoor events in the coming months.

In September, we’ll be continuing our regular Nihongo Club events for now, while also trying out a couple of other events such as “What’s on Your Bookshelf?” and “Pop in & Draw Kyoto”.

Let’s see how they go and enjoy them together. :)

Week 1: Saturday, 5th – Nihongo Club (Ace Hotel Lobby) 12:00–13:30

Week 2: Sunday, 13th – Nihongo Club (Ace Hotel Lobby) 12:00–13:30

Week 3: Saturday, 19th – Nihongo Club (Ace Hotel Lobby) 10:30–12:00 *earlier than usual

Week 4: No Nihongo Club events

—*General Introduction (August 2025)—

Welcome to our first event series, Kyoto Nihongo Club!

It's an almost-weekly, casual and practical conversation event for Japanese learners, those who want:

– To know how to introduce yourself in Japanese.
– To keep the small talk going in Japanese.
– To learn more natural Japanese pronunciation fluently.
– To use your Japanese vocabulary and idioms in the actual conversation.
– To make new friends with whom you can share tips for improving each other's Japanese skills. :)

We also welcome native Japanese speakers who want to join our international community. You can maintain or even polish your English skills by helping Japanese learners with grammar and understanding of Japanese culture and history.

All levels of Japanese and English speakers are welcome. We try to keep the conversation in Japanese. However, English is always our standard tool to complement your understanding/explanation of the Japanese language and culture, so don't feel any pressure on your language skills.

I dream of creating an international community where both new and local people in Kyoto feel comfortable being together. We all love learning about different cultures.

I only started to live in Kyoto last October, and it is my first time living in western Japan. So, whether you're a tourist or have just moved here, I'm pretty much the same as you.

So please join us, and let's give it a go. I'll try to schedule it for the weekends so you can easily find time.

📌 About Donations (updated on 22 Aug. 2026)

Thanks to everyone's generous support, our current donation balance is expected to cover our Meetup running costs for quite some time.

So, we're not currently asking for donations at our events. Please feel free to join us without making a donation. 🙂

If the current conditions remain broadly the same, we're planning to start asking for donations again from 15 February 2028.

We'll continue to review the balance every six months. If there are significant changes to Meetup fees, exchange rates or the current cost-sharing arrangement between the groups, this schedule may change. If so, we'll let everyone know.

日本語話者の皆さんへ。

このイベントに興味をもっていただいてありがとうございます。

この「日本語クラブ」という形は、僕が6年間住んでいたオランダで始めたミートアップイベントの京都バージョンです。オランダでのイベントは今でも現地の仲間によって毎週開催され毎回20人の参加者を集めています。そしてオランダで得た経験を京都でも活かしたいと思いこのイベントをスタートしました。

このイベントは日本語の習得がテーマではありますが、参加者は日本語が流暢な人ばかりではありませんので、必ず英語でのコミュニケーションが必要になります。オランダでの経験では、英語を上達させたいと思っている日本人、僕のように覚えた英語を忘れないようにしたいと考えている日本人の参加者にもとても喜んでいただきました。そして、出身を問わず、異国の地で国際的な仲間の輪に入りたいと考えている人たちにも有益な機会を提供してきました。

京都での新しいグループでも、同じようにたくさんの人たちがつながるコミュニティが作れたらと思っています。

まだ始まったばかりのグループです。参加者が集まらない回もあるかと思いますが、ゴローと海外の話題など日本語や英語でしてみたいと思いましたら、一度お気軽に遊びにきていただければと思います。お子様連れでも大丈夫です。

いつか皆さんにお会いするのを楽しみにしています。

皆さんのご協力のおかげで、現在のドネーション残高で今後のMeetup運営費をしばらくまかなえる見込みとなりました。

そのため、現在イベントでのドネーションのお願いは停止しています。 どうぞドネーションなしで気軽にご参加ください。🙂

現在の条件が大きく変わらなければ、次回のドネーション再開は2028年2月15日を予定しています。

半年ごとに残高を確認し、Meetup利用料、為替レート、グループ間の費用分担などに大きな変化があった場合には、予定を変更することがあります。その場合は改めてお知らせします。
