See all- Capitol Hill to Memory Grove City Walking LoopUtah State Capital, Salt Lake City, UT
Now that we have extra daylight and the temps are on the upswing, we are starting a new weekly series that combines a little bit of nature and a little bit of city scape. Most Tuesday evenings, we will be hosting a Capitol Hill to Memory Grove walk. The route is about three miles. We will start on the southeast side of the Capitol. Meet at the trailhead kiosk that overlooks Memory Grove. This will be a social outing and a great opportunity to meet new people. The best part is that there are no cars along this route. You may walk as slow or as fast as you want. Dogs and strollers are welcome. Bikers may join at the beginning and leave us in the dust. :)
Depending on group preference this week, and as the spring/summer goes on, we will extend the track a little up City Creek Canyon or into the Capitol or Avenues areas. We may even add more socializing and food afterwards. But, for now, here is a partial link to the route:

We look forward to seeing you on the southeast side of the Capitol on Tuesday evenings!
- Wednesday Night: Bald Mountain from Big Mountain SummitBig Mountain Summit Pass, Salt Lake City, UT
*** The trailhead is just 35 minutes from downtown SLC, no further than Brighton or Alta, o come up my way this weel to escape the heat***
This Wednesday, we will continue to chase spring flowers and cooler evening temperatures, meeting at Big Summit Pass Trailhead above Little Dell and hiking the Great Western Trail to Bald Mountain. The hike is 6.7 miles with just over 1600 ft of elevation gain. The hike has a double peak, so the elevation gain is spread out, and you should expect a decent climb on the return trip, but that's good training. Here is the Alltrails page for the hike:

- Full Moon, Sunrise Mt. Timpanogos HikeTimpanokee Trailhead, Pleasant Grove, UT
**Please Read the Full Description; There is IMPORTANT information and instructions below that are necessary to your ability to get to and park at the trailhead for this event**
General Description:
This summer, we are lucky enough to have a full moon coinciding with a weekend. To take advantage of this, we will do a Full Moon, Sunrise hike of Mt. Timpanogos. We will plan to arrive at the trailhead at midnight on Saturday morning and depart around 12:30 a.m. This will give us 5.5 hours to reach the summit (plenty of time but an early enough departure to get ahead of the sea of hikers and headlamps departing between 1 and 2 a.m.). We'll enjoy first light and sunrise between 6:00 a.m. and 6:45 a.m., before turning back down and returning to the car.Trail Option and Parking Information
We are aiming to do this via the Timpooneke Trail, which is 14.2 miles with about 4500 ft of elevation gain.

This, however, requires us to get parking permits. The permits go on sale 30 days ahead of time at 8:00 a.m. MT. The permits will cost a total of $12 each. Every participant should attempt to secure a permit. If you are unsuccessful in doing so, we will attempt to put together some carpools. If too many of us strike out on getting parking permits, we will look at drop off options or switch to the Aspen Grove route, which is 13.9 miles with 4900 feet of elevation gain.
While the path up to Mt. Timpanogos is generally tame by peak standards, both routes include a class 2 scramble from the saddle to the summit with some areas with commitment challenges and some ledged areas/steep drop offs of trail.Weather:
Although this event is happening in the middle of summer, the saddle and summit of Mt. Timpanogos can be very windy and cold. Last time I did this the air temperature at the saddle around 4:00 a.m. was a tick above freezing and there were sustained winds in excess of 20 mph. Accordingly, it is advisable to bring some very warm clothing and possibly an emergency blanket, especially if we arrive at the saddle early and have an hour to wait before summitting.Attendee Limit:
Because this hike is in a wilderness area, there is an attendee cap of 15 people for this event. If the event fills, we may get a second organizer to take a second group, possibly on the same trial possibly on the Aspen Grove route.Cancellation Fee:
Because this event has an attendee cap and because each participant needs to attempt to secure a parking permit, this event does have a cancelation deadline of July 4, 2025, so that those on the waitlist have the opportunity to commit before the parking permits become available. A $25 cancellation fee will apply to anyone who cancels after July 4, 2025, and that fee must be paid by cash or check no later than September 8, 2025, to remain in the group.
