Via Ferrata du Mont (Sixt fer-à-cheval)
Via Ferrata du Mont, 74740 Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, France, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, FRAlright thrill-seekers, we are going for a via ferrata in nearby France (approx 1 hour from Geneva centre by car).
This via ferrata can be suitable for beginners who would like to try this sport for the 1st time, however, you are expected not to be scared of heights and be fairly physically fit. No previous climbing experience is necessary, but it will help.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY TO THE END!
YOU WILL NEED VIA FERRATA EQUIPMENT!!!
The climb is not too long, takes around 1.5 hours to reach the top and around 40 minutes to descend.
The summit is only 900 m high, however, you will be rewarded by a magnificent view of the region (see photos in the link).
Via Ferrata details
As you can see on the photos you will be quite high up and even though it is not a difficult climb the height might scare you. Unfortunately, with via ferrata, there is nobody who can help you if you "freeze" and you just have to continue climbing up until you reach the top. There is no option to climb back down if you change your mind. You can arrange a car share on WhatsApp (link will be provided after you register). Please keep in mind that if you reserve a spot in the car, you are taking a space of another person who will not be able to attend as spaces are limited. Therefore bear in mind that cancelling one day before or on the day is not very considerate towards others. The trip is 78 km one way. That is 156 km and 3-3.5 hours drive. The cost of a car driving one km is around 0.50 - 0.70 CHF per km. If we take an average price 0.60 CHF the car journey will come to around 93 CHF. The cost should be shared between all the people sharing the ride including the driver.
As for equipment, you can hire harnesses, via ferrata lanyards and helmets at Cactus sports in Carouge
Or you can buy via Ferrata equipment in a sport shop or Decathlon
You will need the following:- Via ferrata set (is two connected, energy-absorbing lanyards with two carabiners attached)
- Sling and Screw-Lock Carabiner (length: 60 cm, a Resting Sling makes it easy to rest at any moment, highly recommended)
- Climbing harness (is a must)
- Helmet (bicycle one can be used)
- Gloves (not necessary, but it helps)
- Hiking shoes or trainers with good grip
- Small light rucksack
- Bottle of water
We set the time for 5:00 PM return, but it really all depends on what there is to explore in the area. You should think of bringing a small "lunch", water and something to keep you warm in case the weather changes or if it is cooler at the top (which it often is)
For those who intend to join us directly at the via ferrata, it is at:The parking is not far
We will be there at around 10:30 - 10:45 am as per the schedule. If you can't find us, give us a call or text/whatsapp on 078 656 8518 and let us know you are part of the meetup.
Note that in the event of rain, the meetup will be postponed to a later date.3 attendees
