Charleston: Hiking, Travel & Adventure

It is low tide at the beach - our favorite time to go out and walk. Charleston tide charts are showing low tide at 1:56 PM. Meet on the beach at 1 PM at Station 22 1/2 on Sullivan's Island for a leisurely walk on the beach followed by social hour at one of the restaurants.

National Trails Day is one of our favorite days because it allows us to celebrate America's extensive network of hiking and walking trails. In addition, we like that National Trails Day comes a day after National Donut Day, which is celebrated on June 6. I'll bring the donuts if you bring your walking or hiking shoes. We will meet in the Big Meadow at Palmetto Islands County Park. Join us for a leisurely walk, donuts, discussion, and maybe a story about your favorite trail.

I'm not going to charge you for the donuts but you will have to pay a $2.00 per person entrance fee to get into the park unless you have an annual Charleston County Park pass.

I was able to get a permit for 4 people to hike the Rockwall Trail in Canada - one of the most scenic hikes in Canada. Details:

Sun, July 27 - Fly to Calgary, drive to Marble Canyon Campsite.
Mon, July 28 - Drive to Floe Lake TH, hike 6.5 miles to campsite.
Tue, July 29 - Hike 10.6 miles to Tumbling Creek
Wed, July 30 - Hike 7.6 miles to Helmet Falls
Thu, July 31 - Hike out 8.8 miles. Drive to hotel in Calgary
Fri, Aug 1 - Fly home from Calgary,

This is a backpacking trip in the Canadian Rockies so being in shape is key. Expect elevation gains and losses on the hikes. incredible views, peak wildflower season, and maybe a chance to try out your bear spray. Camping is in a wilderness area in a tent on a tent pad.

Costs include: $104 pp for campground and backcountry reservations. You will also need to include costs for airfare, food, 1 nights hotel in Calgary, and splitting the costs of a car rental. In addition, Parks Canada has a daily admission charge of $7.65 pp.

As the John Muir Trail continues south and enters Kings Canyon National Park it passes through an incredibly scenic area known as the Rae Lakes Basin. When hikers talk about the most beautiful sections of the John Muir Trail, the Rae Lakes area ranks right up there near the top of the list. Kings Canyon NP is a stunningly beautiful park largely known as the step-sister of Yosemite. This 54 mile backpacking trip of 5 nights and 6 days is one of the most scenic hikes in the U.S.

Starting at the Onion Valley campground on the eastern side of the Sierras we hike up over Kearsarge Pass and then over to our first night's campsite at Charlotte Lake. From there we hike in a clockwise direction on the Rae Lakes Loop Trail.

Day 1: 8.5 miles. Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass to Charlotte Lake.
Day 2: 8.5 miles. Charlotte Lake to Junction Meadow.
Day 3: 11.1 miles. Junction Meadow to Middle Paradise Valley.
Day 4: 7 .7 miles. Middle Paradise Valley to Woods Creek Bridge.
Day 5: 6.5 miles. Woods Creek Bridge to Rae Lakes.
Day 6: 12 miles. Rae Lake over Glen and Kearsarge Pass to car.
