What we’re about
Welcome to the Berkshire Walkers (BWs). The BW group is a part of the Ramblers, a national charity dedicated to removing barriers so everyone can enjoy walking in green spaces, and to improving Britain’s most popular and least-known walking places. The Ramblers are committed to campaigning to keep our countryside open to all and to fighting for the things that matter most to walkers. The Ramblers lead the way, and the walks, for a vibrant community united by the joys of walking, helping everyone get more out of their walks.
All participants of all group events are required to adhere to our Group Charter and Ramblers Values - https://www.berkshirewalkers.co.uk/conduct-and-safeguarding/
You can enjoy 3 taster walks with the Berkshire Walkers for FREE, after which you are required to become a member. Annual membership is exceptionally reasonable (just over £3.50pm on Direct Debit).
With membership, you can also join any of the other 500 Rambler groups, including other Berkshire groups and those nearby in Surrey, Sussex, Oxford, and Hampshire. What's not to like! Find out how to join here: https://www.berkshirewalkers.co.uk/join-group/
Groups are run entirely by local volunteers. Local group activities can include inspecting and maintaining paths, organising group walks or running local campaigns. Each group is run by an elected committee giving members ownership of what we do locally. We have over 100,000 members.
Please note: we list a full event programme on our website of walks, socials and trips: https://www.berkshirewalkers.co.uk/

- La Dolce Vita at LussoLusso, Newbury
For this evening meal social, we’ll be going to the Italian restaurant Lusso, which has been hugely popular and a staple in Weaver’s Walk, Newbury for many years. The menu offers a good range of authentic sourdough pizzas as well as a wide range of pasta dishes. As the booking only has 12 spaces, including the organiser, please show your interest as soon as possible via here on Meetup if you’re interested to avoid disappointment. The menu for the restaurant can be found here.
- 25 Miles for 25 Years, strenuousReading railway station, Reading
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Berkshire Walkers, Georgia & Will are leading a 25 mile walk from Reading Station to Newbury along the Kennet & Avon Canal Path.
Although flat, please note that the length of this walk will be challenging (walking at a pace of 3 miles an hour) and it is advised that you carry supplies such as water, food and if the weather is hot, suncream.
Throughout the walk, there are potential drop out points at each station along the route, which offer train lines to both the Reading Station start point and Newbury Station end point.
If the group has to split due to a speed difference, any slower group that is not keeping up may be advised to stop at the next station to drop out.
Taking in views of the Canal, in hopefully some dry weather (this time), we will venture past some of the many walk starting stations that the group has used throughout the years.
With a couple of diversions to make up the 25 Miles, we aim to arrive in Newbury with some time for a small pub social at the end (subject to time and pace).
Those who do not wish to join the 25 Miles or only want to take part in a small section, can view Pickup Stations and timings below (please note, due to the strict timings, we are unable to wait for anyone who is late).
If you are planning on joining at a pickup point, please let us know by messaging on meetup.

- Henley-on-Thames to Bourne End, 12.7 miles, moderateHenley Railway Station, Henley
Today’s scenic walk will start in Henley-on-Thames and follow the River Thames to Bourne End via Marlow. Starting at Henley station, we’ll walk through Hill Meadow towards the Thames Footpath, which we follow to take us out of Henley via the road bridge. This’ll take us to Hambleden Lock, where we walk through Mill End we’ll follow Ferry Lane towards a cluster of houses, Harleyford Golf Club and a marina. After passing these, we’ll head into Marlow via Pergola Field where we’ll be stopping for lunch in Higginson Park. This’ll also be the drop out point for those who want to finish the walk early.
After lunch, we’ll head back towards the Thames, where we’ll continue walking it and parallel to the railway. This’ll take us along the Shakespeare's Way into Bourne End, where we pass a few of the sailing facilities that are based alongside the Thames. After some time, we should come to a railway bridge, which we’ll walk under before turning heading towards the finishing point at the station. For those who want a pint at the end of the walk, we’ll be stopping at The Walnut Tree, which is roughly a 5-minute walk from the station.
Ascent: 34m.
This walk will be led by Michael v..

TRAINS:
The recommended train to get from Reading is the 09:41 Elizabeth line service that arrives in Twyford at 09:46. This then gives enough time to get the 10:15 GWR service that arrives in Henley at 10:27.
DRIVING:
Although this walk starts in Henley, it may be easier to park at Twyford or Maidenhead stations and get the train to Henley from there. Both of these stations have good sized car parks, where parking fees apply.
DOGS:
Dogs are allowed on this walk as long as they're well behaved.
Please contact the leader directly if you are delayed on the day or can't find the group (find contact details on our website). We are unlikely to respond to Meetup comments or messages sent on the day in enough time to be helpful.
